All trousers are weird and terrible now!

I really need some new trousers. I haven’t bought any for about 10 years - the last ones I bought were in a Gap shop, which haven’t existed for quite some time now, so really ages ago. Today I bit the bullet and went into town with the express purpose of finding some trousers. I was really determined to - how hard could it be, right? Well, apparently very hard. I went to Uniqlo, Zara, Cos, & Other Stories, Reiss, and John Lewis. Everything was either massive legs, weird horrible fabrics, or both. I’m a 56-year-old woman, size 10-12, used to be reasonably stylish. Can’t believe I could not find one single pair and have the fear that I will never be able to find trousers again. Where the hell else do I look?

Id pretty much disagree with the opinion that all trousers are bad at the moment.
In fact I dont think Ive ever seen such a wide variety of styles in the shops all at once! You can find anything you like with very little effort.
Ive bought 4 pairs this month from one shop, barrel legged, denim culottes, balloon legged and cigarette pants. And they def had plenty of the standard wide , slim and skinny cuts too!

Your legs don’t look like barrels.

But you get to look like someone who’s interested in new things and not afraid of experimentation.

It’s not about the shape, it’s the signalling.

Edited

I don't even know what that means

What does it mean, please?

I just like some straight trousers. I look ridiculous in the other stuff and I don't want to spend ages planning an outfit.

I've got to buy some new trousers so I'm concerned to hear that M&S petite has gone wrong....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/03/2026 17:36

God yes. The weird pleats at the front - I find they actually fit well but you need to size up so much so the pleats aren’t pulled open or they don’t hang right and make it look like they are too small.

Something a bit like this maybe? But these are £188 which is out of my budget, unfortunately.

Where are they from, OP, please?

Just adding support @theministerscat and anyone else similarly annoyed.

Yes, "wide legged" trousers are fashionable and it's awkward if you want a different style.

Wide-legged trousers do not suit my figure. It would be good to have an option between "wide" and "skinny".

pashmina696 · 23/03/2026 17:57

Try saint and Sofia, or the Boden Richmond trousers I have them in various colours and some patterned ones too - they are comfortable smart and they fit me.

Overtheatlantic · 23/03/2026 18:57

Saint and Sofia have excellent trousers except they run long. I’m 163cm and had to get the short length hemmed. Despite that they otherwise fit very well and aren’t too wide.

I have a pair of these and they are great - slim fitting with a bit of stretch

Yes likewise

fit is great

i found the navy ones did go a bit bobbly in places

My dd is 5’3 and said M&S short is now too long, they used to fit fine, I’ve ordered the short myself on her recommendation at at 5’6 they fit. Shops if you are reading this, the average height in the uk is not 5’10!!! You would think so based on what shops sell

Yes and the waist isn’t deep enough

I get on better with WS trousers

theministerscat · 23/03/2026 19:31

Thanks everyone, I’m researching your suggestions. I’m 5’6’ so need a bit of a decent length but not madly long.

They do look quite nice. But I think Boden haven’t been on my radar recently because didn’t they go a bit rubbish a few years ago - prices went up and quality really went down?

Sainsbury’s Tu and Next do both slim and straight ones

Agree who wants their legs to look like barrels?

The M&S barrel legs have been sold out in everything but large sizes for weeks until now. This had made me really want them.

Now they finally have them in stock, I today ordered 3 pairs. I’m collecting them tomorrow and I’ll be gutted if they look awful on me - I love the look of them on (some) other people.

kitkatkat · 23/03/2026 19:49

I went on a very similar mission last weekend and found these - terrible website with no good pictures, but they were a good fit (am 5ft7, size 10/12) gb.benetton.com/slim-fit-chinos-camel-4Y77DF0AW_81R.html

I’m 4’10”. Trousers are a nightmare. I’m still wearing M&S ones that are 10+ years old & even older Anne Brooks Petite, anyone remember them. They were in Debenhams' & long gone.

I was with a lovely beautiful stylish lady at an art course at the weekend and even she looked terrible in barrel jeans

Namechangedforspooky · 23/03/2026 20:05

Halara. They are really stretchy and feel like wearing pjs but somehow flattering too!

I’m going to give them a whirl, I love the shape of them.

Noras · 23/03/2026 20:19

White company seem to have classical trousers and kind sizing for the apple shaped people like I am

Catcatcatcatcat · 23/03/2026 20:22

I’m 5ft 5 and size 6 trousers. I really like the wide leg look.

I agree re the lengths though. I dare not buy trousers off Vinted because whether I buy short, regular or long, brand new with tags, fuck knows how long they will be!! It’s a lottery.

Focusispower · 23/03/2026 20:28

For slimmer ‘mom’ fit jeans, Zara are good. I think their jeans are generally a great fit. Very reasonable so you can experiment with a couple of
styles without over investing. M&S carrot leg jeans/trousers are also excellent - I bought a cream pair for holiday and they are a relaxed but more modern style.

I am relatively small framed and some wide styles and oversized clothes generally make me look ridiculous. I don’t understand how some people can look so good in an oversized coat and yet, I look like a child who’s pinched their mum’s coat.

There's absolutely nothing wrong in having a style that you know works for you and sticking with it.

All this so-called "experimentation" is actually imposed on us by a single company called WSGN. How it works: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DA-CozY2isc

The wide flappy leg look is so unflattering for many, or most should I say.

The straight or slim leg is good on anyone.

I'm wearing stuff that's a few years old now because I refuse to look like I'm a boat in Cowes Week.

Apples look even rounder in slim or straight leg. I have to wear wide legs to look balanced.

I want 90s bootcuts again, fitted to the knee and then flaring out. I looked awesome in those.
