Anyone tried skin peels at home? Need something for the revolting blackheads or SFs on my nose.

Excuse the horrible photos! My skin is generally quite good and I have a solid skincare routine in place that I’m really consistent with. I apply tretinoin 0.025% each night-I may try and increase the strength again but when I go up strengths just on my nose I peel all over my face which is too annoying to continue. I also apply salicylic acid each morning. I’ve tried other acids over the years but I can’t get rid of the horrible blackheads and oily skin.
I’m now wondering about peels at home. I’m on the US Platinum skincare peels Facebook page and the results look great but I don’t really want to buy a peel from the US and pay import duty. So wondering here if anyone has tried a UK seller and would recommend a specific peel. Thanks.

They look like Sebaceous filaments to me too and I’d recommend Paula’s choice BHA too.

sociableintrovert123 · 21/03/2026 23:51

I have been using Paula’s Choice BHA daily for about two years but it unfortunately makes no difference.

I just use a terrycloth facecloth and Aveeno fragrance free show gel. Twice a day.

@MrsCarmelaSoprano ordered thanks! Though I thought physical scrubs were a complete no no now in skincare. The reviews say it’s a finely milled scrub so maybe that’s okay?
@whoTFismadelaine I just used the Ordinary’s charcoal salicylic acid mask and that has really helped so I need to remember and use it regularly. I’ll check out some clay face washes too. Any recommendations?

It was fabulous for DS when he was black heady as a teen,I think it has salycilic acid in it which just made them sort of pop out on their own ,was fascinating 😂 Hope it works for you.

Definitely sebaceous filaments, it looks exactly like my nose. Paula’s choice etc did nothing, Tretinoin was the best but nothing has ever got rid of them. You can clean them out but I think (it’s late!!) the pore is slightly stretched so it fills then oxidises and looks black

ClaireEclair · 22/03/2026 06:54

Aren’t these filaments rather than blackheads? I have them too. They probably aren’t noticeable to anyone but you. Those photos are very close up so I think they will be almost invisible in real life .

OrdinaryGirl · 22/03/2026 07:28

Edited my comment (can’t delete for some reason) because realised you are already on tretinoin - apologies! Wishing you all the best OP

sociableintrovert123 · 22/03/2026 08:21

@OrdinaryGirlno problem! I think I might try and increase my tretinoin strength again to see if that helps. I’ll maybe go a bit slower to try and avoid peeling.
I’ll also check out clay masks and cleansers-I feel these could really help. Thanks all!

Seeing that you'll probably have all the relevant products, have you read about this method for reducing SFs?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned these: https://www.vueskin.com/en-ie/collections/bestsellers
They’re hydrocolloid patches snd very effective in deep cleansing and minimising the appearance of sebaceous filaments.

In all honesty, my skin became better when I stopped using products. I used to be using cleanser, pore stuff, face masks, nose strips etc. going cold turkey and just using water and a bit of spf.

sociableintrovert123 · 22/03/2026 11:12

@lovehatesummer yep! Tried it! I didn’t find any gritty bits came away in my fingers so presumed it didn’t work. I do find the masks effective though (I use a charcoal one).
@KittytheHareoh they look intriguing. Wonder how often I’d need to use them. My DS has the hydrocolloid dots so I might try lots of them tonight to give it a try before I buy. Hopefully I don’t get any unexpected visitors!

Origins resurfacing clay mask is very good although spendy. Sometimes less is more op and if you're applying layers of Korean serums and toners they will fill up pores in no time. Sometimes its really not needed and just gimicky to get people to spend money.

BlindMedusa · 22/03/2026 17:00

Islo's serum softener is apparently brilliant. I ordered mine off Olive Young so I haven't tried it yet but you can get it off amazon too and Superdrug? It softens everything up and then you can gently scrape it off, think it'll work more for sebaceous filaments but worth a try
