pyjamas vs nightdresses

hello, i've recently rediscovered nightdresses after years of wearing pyjamas (always nightdresses before that, and through insomnia induced boredom wondered what people tended to wear as the only other die hard nightdress fan i know is my gran. so, pyjamas or nightdresses and reasons why pleaseGrin

reasons:

  1. feels lovely after a leg wax
  2. i feel they look better
  3. i have health issues which often give me bowel/bladder pain and the lack of waistband somewhat helps
  4. pyjamas feel - imo - quite generic and i've always been one to go against the grain lol

I've never worn pjs since I was a child or young teen.

I hate the idea of elastic round my waist and wearing 'trousers' in bed- be far too hot.

I have various nighties. Some are T shirt style , but always knee length, other are 'chemises' with thin straps, some have long sleeves for the winter.

They are all cotton or a silky viscose fabric and occasionally I've pushed the boat out and bought pure silk.

I buy from The White Company and J Lewis mainly. A couple from M&S.

I cannot stand nightdresses - they just remind me of when I was a teenager and worked for a bit in a nursing home. They are the bed wear of choice for people over 65. Nothing wrong with being over 65 of course but I don't wish to look much older than I am

I've worn nighties since my early 20s and bought a very sexy one in Miss Selfridge then. It was full length, beige silky satin and lace, and fastened with tiny bows all down one side. Spaghetti thin straps and a plunging nackline.

You need to get out a bit more!

I am sorry but beige with bows does not exactly scream "sexy" to me!

It did back then and it's a personal choice.

For 'beige' substitute 'oyster' - pinky nude beige.

I expect your 'care home' nighties were thick cotton, or nylon, pale pink or blue, often with flowers. And a matching bed jacket perhaps?

Most of the time I don’t wear anything in bed. If I’m properly cold then I find a pair of old leggings (not the sporty type, the wear round the house type) and a long sleeve t-shirt is less restrictive than pyjamas.
Or if just a bit chilly I’ll put on one of my ancient long t-shirts. They’re designed for sleeping in but I wouldn’t call them a nightdress. I’d like to replace them but when I looked around I couldn’t find any ‘sleepwear’ t-shirts that were straight up and down, not shaped, and didn’t have ‘comedy’ slogans, teddy bears or hearts, or ditsy floral patterns. There’s definitely a thing where designers think if we don’t want to wear pyjamas then we want to regress to being five years old when we go to bed.

I sleep naked. I couldn't imagine wearing PJ's or nighties to bed.
I wear PJ's around the house. I was probably a very young child the last time I wore a nightie.

GameOfJones · 22/03/2026 08:41

Definitely pyjamas and they have to be fitted so a cuffed style trouser or cycling style short pyjamas with a vest. I cannot bear anything twisting round me or riding up which a nightie or loose pyjamas would do.

thinktoomuchtoooften · 22/03/2026 08:44

In winter.. long nightie with long sleeves but v neck
In summer.. short pjs and vest

Both have to be jersey stretchy stuff, esp the pj bottoms. Can’t bear the woven type ones.

Alittlefrustrated · 22/03/2026 09:19

Was a naked sleeper, then had DS in early 40's and eventually felt I had to consider his MH 😬 I am very heat intolerant, so stick to short slip style nighties.
I don't sit around in nightwear/dressing gowns. I think because I did early morning and late night dog walks for years.
I do like the look of PJs.

I wear nightdresses (like oversized tees) in summer as I would get too hot in pjs, but I wear pjs (well, a top and leggings) in winter as it keeps me warmer.

Same

localnotail · 22/03/2026 10:10

I wear a large soft tshirt and large cotton knickers in bed. Does this count as nightdress or PJs?

Itsafactitsactual · 22/03/2026 10:13

organic cotton nightdress mid calf length with shoulder coverage

Hotcrossed · 22/03/2026 10:32

nighties here,
i thought i was the only one!
the pjs you surely need to wash every day
i am warm enough in a nighty

thinktoomuchtoooften · 22/03/2026 10:33

Am so surprised the voting has nighties ahead.. the shops are missing something!

Badlifeday · 22/03/2026 10:47

Do the people who sleep in little shorts or camis (or nothing) use a dressing gown of some kind whenever they leave their bedroom? I'm very conscious of living with teenagers and not wanting to upset their eyes! So it's easier to be in pyjamas and then not have to pull something extra on for one of my many toilet trips

HotRootsAndNaughtyToots · 22/03/2026 10:50

Loose pjs for me, the top preferably being my old and super comfy tshirt which I should really throw out

I like the feel of gentle draping, they should be cotton, linen or a light Jersey- keep me warm in the winter and help keep me cool in a heat wave too

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 22/03/2026 10:54

Pyjamas in the colder months, no knickers. I have amassed a collection of long white cotton Victorian-style nightdresses for the summer. The only issue with nighties is I hate wearing knickers in bed but also like some fanny coverage, so I got round that by wearing some M&S slip pantaloon things under them, super comfy!

LamplightAndShadows · 22/03/2026 11:01

Nighties, huge floaty 'one size' white cotton ones with long sleeves. Like a ghost in a Gothic novel.

The cotton is quite thin so I need a dressing gown to answer the door to avoid giving the postman an eye full.

But they are cool in summer, warm in winter, and voluminous enough not to get trapped. I've got a long torso so pyjama waistbands are always too low and tight. And the crotch is too high and rides up uncomfortably in the night.

Ophy83 · 22/03/2026 13:04

Mostly PJs but I've got a couple of lovely cotton nighties from Their Nibs that are so comfy

QuinionsRainbow · 22/03/2026 14:18

Neither, for the past 50 years, an unintended consequence of Mum's not-to-be-ignored invitation to strip off completely during the 1976 heatwave. Although nothing was said at the time about any exit strategy, when Autumn came we, Mum and Dad included, were all irrevocably wedded to the concept of birthday suits as nightwear, and the rest is history.
