Black tie wedding at restaurant: is this dress suitable or too much?

I’ve been invited to a black tie wedding and I’m really unsure what to wear - at the last couple of weddings I’ve been to that have been black tie I’ve felt overdressed. This wedding will have a lot of the same guests so I imagine the same kinds of dresses. I’ve found that other guests have worn dresses I would wear to weddings without a black tie code - floral long but not quite maxi dresses.
The wedding is being held at a nice restaurant.
Would this dress be suitable or too much?

It's a lovely dress, but based on your description of what your friends have worn to similar occasions, I think it might slide into overdressed territory. But if you love it you could just think sod it and wear it anyway, on the basis that it's the others who are underdressed!

PurpleTinsel555 · 17/03/2026 15:23

I love that. Better overdressed than under — at a restaurant in particular this feels appropriate. A floral dress wouldn’t. Wear it with a relaxed chignon, fun earrings and slay.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 17/03/2026 15:26

Possibly overdressed as its at a restaurant.

BunnyFrock · 17/03/2026 15:35

Yep. Too much.

PensionMention · 17/03/2026 15:38

Maybe a bit much as in upstage the bride but it is one hell of a gorgeous gown.

BananaSkinShoes · 17/03/2026 15:38

I think it’s lovely for a black tie wedding. I’m my experience, they’re very dressy.

Send your friends and their floral dresses (sound hideous) to S&B for guidance.

sendmehomeplease · 17/03/2026 15:39

To me, that dress is eaking into bridesmaid territory.
From your description of other black tie weddings you’ve been to, I’d bring the glam down a notch or two.

I can wholeheartedly say I won’t upstage the bride - she’s absolutely stunning with impeccable style, her dress will no doubt be incredible.

Bridesmaid territory would be my concern too although I know the colour is completely different to the colours being used by the bridal party.

It’s beautiful and totally suitable for a black tie wedding. It’s not your fault if others aren’t as stylish as you.

Gerbera55 · 17/03/2026 15:44

Taking all of these opinions on board!

Absolutely stunning dress

Friendlygingercat · 17/03/2026 15:50

Stunning dress. I dont see that as breaking into bridesmaid territory.Since when did bridesmaids wear black. Go for it!

I’ve seen bridesmaids wearing black and the dress looks more of a French Navy.

Yeah it’s navy.

It's gorgeous, very similar to one I wore at a friend's black tie wedding recently (yours is a bit nicer!).
Not your fault others don't know how to follow dress codes. If bridge is stylish she'll appreciate you making the effort

ExitPursuedByABare · 17/03/2026 16:19

Wear it. Looks fabulous.

bellsbuss · 17/03/2026 16:19

Stunning dress , go ahead and wear it

DappledThings · 17/03/2026 16:26

It's fine if you like that level of dressing up. I'm always more comfortable underdressed than overdressed but if you prefer potentially overdressed based on your description of similar weddings then go for it. It's a very nice dress.

I would personally mostly ignore a black tie dress code and wear what I would normally wear to any wedding because I think it's pretentious nonsense but if you like that evening style then enjoy the opportunity to wear it

oneoneone · 17/03/2026 16:26

Do you have the dress or have you tried it on @Gerbera55? It could just be the photo, but it looks like it has a really odd fit on the top half.

It’s not black it’s navy. But, my bridesmaids wore black. It’s not unheard of!

LadybirdsProcessing · 17/03/2026 16:37

It's beautiful, given your comment about the bride's stylishness I'd say wear it - making the effort will be a compliment to the couple. It would be different if there were a risk of upstaging the bride.

I’ve ordered it - not sure what the fit will be like but I’ll give it a go!

When did "black tie" wedding become a thing? It sounds ludicrous to order a dress code of "black tie" for an event starting in the day.

Is it used by people who are confused what "black tie" means and think it's a synonym for formal wear?
