Black tie wedding at restaurant: is this dress suitable or too much?

I’ve been invited to a black tie wedding and I’m really unsure what to wear - at the last couple of weddings I’ve been to that have been black tie I’ve felt overdressed. This wedding will have a lot of the same guests so I imagine the same kinds of dresses. I’ve found that other guests have worn dresses I would wear to weddings without a black tie code - floral long but not quite maxi dresses.
The wedding is being held at a nice restaurant.
Would this dress be suitable or too much?

When did "black tie" wedding become a thing? It sounds ludicrous to order a dress code of "black tie" for an event starting in the day.

Is it used by people who are confused what "black tie" means and think it's a synonym for formal wear?

I think black tie weddings are gaining popularity here, like all things American. We haven’t quite got there with their timings though, any American wedding I’ve been to has started at about 5pm.

Giving the couple their dues here - it is a completely evening event!

It’s lovely but I literally saw a bridesmaid wearing that on Instagram this morning.

5 p. m is just about ok. I've been at proper black tie events starting at 6ish.

Afternoon or morning black tie would look like most people, particularly the men, had stopped out from the night before.

Oh right, thanks in that case your dress is fine.

Elegant and understated. Gorgeous dress.

It’s beautiful and totally suitable for a black tie wedding. It’s not your fault if others aren’t as stylish as you.

This! It’s beautiful and completely suitable for black tie. Don’t drop your standards. Anyone in a floral dress has missed the black tie brief.

Or considers it pretentious nonsense and chosen to not follow it same as I have done in the past.

I was once invited to a wedding with the ceremony at 11.30 then food then a massive 4 hour gap and an expectation to return in the evening having changed into black tie. No thanks. One outfit for the day was plenty for me.

I think it's good in theory, @Gerbera55. Very suitable for the brief.

But is no one else seeing what I'm seeing? It looks like it's cut super low under the arms and then it's tight across her breasts but poofs out both above and below them.

Where's it from? Are there more photos of it? When is the wedding? I think you might want to have a plan B, just in case.

I like it and would think it’s definitely black tie - what else would it be? Opinion are so variable on here!

I went to a black tie dinner as part of a wedding weekend and lots of people wore midi dresses (me included but it was navy satin not floral!)

Goldbar31 · 17/03/2026 19:47

It’s stunning and I’d much rather be overdressed than underdressed!
Enjoy!

wantmorenow · 17/03/2026 19:48

It's perfect. Wear it and enjoy. If you want to dress it down a bit then pair with a fluffy shrug, maybe baby pink to contrast.

It’s from Quiz via New Look. It’s not for cool of months so I’ve got time. I am quite short in the torso so it could fit very differently.
