What's currently stylish for glasses wearers?

I need new glasses and not sure what are current right now. The last time I bought, it seemed that clear plastic, largish frames were the "in thing." I can't wear metal frames as my lenses are too thick (even after thinning). What are up to date at the minute? I don't know where to look for inspiration.

Have a look at Cubitts and Iolla. Both have released oval frames as their latest styles (along with wire frames which I know you said didn't suit) but definitely still larger chunkier frames around too.

I wear glasses fulltime, so I focus (ha) on what suits me, rather than what's in fashion.

I've one frameless pair and one tortoiseshell pair with photosensitive lenses. I used to prefer smaller 'windows' but now I have varifocals so need to go a bit bigger.

Squatbox · 14/03/2026 08:25

Chunky semi-opaque frames still in

oval shapes

seen a few people wearing a light tinted frame- like a rosy pink or a peach tone too

GameOfJones · 14/03/2026 08:40

I wear glasses full time and chunky frames are still in. I agree that it depends on face shape, some shapes of glasses look great and other people and terrible on me..... I need a slightly more rectangular frame as I have a round face, so anything oval or really rounded looks awful. I'd go into an opticians to try lots of pairs on and take photos of yourself in them, go away and have a look.... don't buy them then and there. Try lots of different styles on, sometimes they surprise you.

I've worn glasses for 52 years now and know what you mean. I like to choose something that suits me but also that looks fresh and up to date

Oh no - ovals are definitely not my shape. I look like Olive from On the Buses if you get that reference 🤣. I don't suit the clear plastic either so glad a little colour is still in

Thanks for this. Some lovely styles and I'm surprised how many tortoise shell styles are still there.

I've just bought a pair similar to these,I'm finding them a bit heavy tbh. I'm going to get a lighter pair so I have a choice.

I'm definitely better in a rectangular frame too. I have tried round ones before but they really didn't suit me. It's so hard to choose as I am very short sighted (-8). I do take photos with them on but it's never the same as properly seeing them. I used to wear contacts so it was easier but I struggle with them now too.

I've worn glasses for many years in just about every shape and style you can mention. I've noticed that, if I wear the same shape for longer than a couple of years, I become convinced that nothing else will suit me. I don't think that's really the case and that it's more that we get used to one shape and then sometimes find it hard to adjust.

At the moment I have two pairs, both plastic frames, one round-ish and thinnish and the other a cats eye shape and chunkier. I like them both but might go for a metal frame next as I like to keep moving. If I do, it'll probably take some adjustment but I've worn metal frames quie happily before so I know it'll be fine.

I'd love a gold/copper metal frame but my lenses are so thick it wouldn't hold them. I think they look so delicate- lovely.
I get your point about trying other shapes though. I did try a round pair a couple of pairs ago but they did make my face just look rounder. It doesn't need any more help in that direction. 😊

thick chunky frames are still in. but the newest trend seems to be acetate. clear transparent frames in all colours. there are some styles that are timeless, like the aviators and the rimless frames-if you prefer smaller lighter eyewear that suits most people.

JulietteHasAGun · 22/03/2026 20:51

Oval ones definitely seem to be having a moment. I got some recently from Jimmy Fairly and get lots of compliments from random sales assistants, etc about them.

Teaforthetotal · 22/03/2026 21:11

I've started noticing people in the oval frames,I really like them.Keen to try in but not sure if they'd suit me.

Daisymay2 · 22/03/2026 21:29

i am very shortsighted so need maximum thinning and just started with varifocals. My last 3 pairs have been from Prodesign a danish company..Newest pair are two tone blue and turquoise.
I always fancy metal ones but the technician at the optician always shakes his head.

You can absolutely get the metal frames if you like. Just choose the thin 1.74 varifocal lenses for the best look

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/03/2026 21:52

I'm a cats eye kind of girl. I have one dark Vivienne Westwood pair and two rosy pink pairs.

I don't know if I can get away with ovals but maybe I need to give them a try

Same here but wearing varifocal for about 10 years now. I do maximum thinning too but as you say, the dispensing opticians always say no to a metal frame. I think if you are extremely long sighted you can do it as those lenses are thinnest at the edges. Not so much us, my short sighted friend. 😐

I've never been able to get them Purple Panda even with the thinnest lenses. I'm about -8/9 now in my short sightedness - have you had success with level? Can you let me know where if you have?

I have large hexagonal frameless - they seem to be popular now and I like mine Lots of room for good varifocal and lightweight.

Who cares what’s in? Just try some on until you find a pair that suits you!

SeekingSolutions76 · 23/03/2026 13:43

The ones I got this time weee much larger but not big bulky frames.
they are kind of a reddy translucent liberty pair from Specsavers and I also got a metal framed which are much larger glass than I have had before and whilst I prefer the look of the liberty ones the larger ‘window’ has been fab. I really like not seeing the frame in my line of vision a lot of the time

weirdly nether look the same as in the links. Very similar but I wouldn’t had said the metal ones were red for a start but anyway those are the frames. The woman serving me was about 25/26 ish and had very similar ones to the metal ones on.

Which is exactly what I do but I would also like to know what is current and would choose a pair which fits in both categories
