I'm a couple of decades away yet, but I'm thinking I'll go full Bea Arthur when the time comes.

All her outfits were fabulous, and yet she was the constant butt of jokes about being the "ugly" one.

I do hope my actual lifestyle will be more Rue McClanahan though.

I loved that show. I think I would also aim for Bea Arthur, she just looked more comfortable.

Sidebeforeself · 13/03/2026 22:17

God I love this show.. Blanche and Dorothy both wore some great outfits! Rose… less so !

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 13/03/2026 22:17

They all dress for comfort, in a very glamorous way, but Bea Arthur is more chic than the others. Has a bit of edge.

Rue had it written into her contract that she would keep all the outfits she wore in the show

The shoulder pads, the Grecian lines! Where can you get things with shoulder pads like that now? It's so effortlessly elegant.

The silky two pieces. The statement earrings!

The cheesecake!

Cheesecake at 2am in a satin negligee, living with spunky single friends in Miami, dating Kid Twist from The Sting. These are my goals for my sixties.

In your sixties???? I turn 60 in a year - my goals are multiple affairs with younger men, driving an E-type Jag, taking up smoking weed & getting a tattoo - but not til my 80s ...!!!

What are you doing now that's better than any of those things?

Honestly I'd take the Golden Girls lifestyle right now, let alone in twenty years.

I love the golden girls, so funny. Rose squeezing Blanch’s hand has me in stitches.
I’ll def channel Blanch in a couple of years. I was living in Miami when the show was on but it wasn’t actually filmed there, sadly, or I’d have been in that audience for sure.

I remember admiring Bea Arthur in her previous show "Maude". The credits showed such a formidable woman and I remember wishing that I had even half her strength of personality. I was only in my teens, but really admired her style, even though I realised I was too short to ever try to copy it. A friend had on a new outfit one day and I told her she was channelling Maude's energy. She was vey flattered.

Rue McClanahan was it it too.

I am obsessed with this show. I have stood outside the actual house they show at the beginning.

I loved watching it when I was a kid the first time around, but rewatching as an adult I can't get over how brilliant the writing really is. Not to mention the performances of course - Betty White in particular is extraordinary. The greatest dumb blonde since Marilyn Monroe.

Betty White was my favourite in that show!

Sidebeforeself · 14/03/2026 19:26

I also think some of the humour was quite risqué for the time!

damelza · 14/03/2026 19:29

My late mother adored that show. Sadly she needed full time care towards the end of her life and called her nursing home Shady Pines. 😊

Oh that’s fab! I say it to my DH when he can’t find his glasses etc and he has no idea what I’m going on about. But it makes me laugh .

It's interesting that in the truly barrier breaking and one of my absolute all-time favourite shows, "Mary Tyler More Show", Betty White played the saccharinely/acid tongued smooth ferocious man eater, Sue Anne Nivens (two emmies), to perfection.

When they were casting The Golden Girls she was offered the role of Blanche and Rue M (who played her sweet, scatterbrained neighbour in Maude with Bea A) was offered the role of Rose, as they were similar to tboth heir previous big successes. They decided they would like to change roles, and history was made.

At least that's what I read at the time. And I'm showing my age.

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 15/03/2026 11:41

I love watching clips of Betty White being interviewed on talk shows. She was lightning fast. Is there anyone remotely comparable to her these days?

I’m going to have to go back and re-watch as I remember all of the outfits as being absolutely terrible. They all looked 80 when they were probably 50. And Bea Arthur was the manly, unattractive one, in my memory. (I would’ve been about 12, so I need a reminder)

There were a lot of jokes in the show about her being the unattractive one, but she was gorgeous. And the outfits are perfect - so Miami.

Some of the outfits don't look great to modern eyes sure, but as grown-up Dorothy's look the best to me. Usually more interesting, comfortable and confident than Rose or Blanche (though they look great too).
