Making notes for my Golden Girls era...

I'm a couple of decades away yet, but I'm thinking I'll go full Bea Arthur when the time comes.

All her outfits were fabulous, and yet she was the constant butt of jokes about being the "ugly" one.

I do hope my actual lifestyle will be more Rue McClanahan though.

I’m here for this. I was always obsessed with the decor in Blanche’s room 😍 the pink and the tropical palm print is just perfection!

It's interesting that in the truly barrier breaking and one of my absolute all-time favourite shows, "Mary Tyler More Show", Betty White played the saccharinely/acid tongued smooth ferocious man eater, Sue Anne Nivens (two emmies), to perfection.

When they were casting The Golden Girls she was offered the role of Blanche and Rue M (who played her sweet, scatterbrained neighbour in Maude with Bea A) was offered the role of Rose, as they were similar to tboth heir previous big successes. They decided they would like to change roles, and history was made.

At least that's what I read at the time. And I'm showing my age.

This is brilliant! God Betty White could do anything.

Oh I know, I love it! Actually you're right - need to think about the home decor as well as the outfits.

Is it bad that I'm genuinely thinking about putting polished copper moulds on the wall when I re-do my kitchen this year (I have some lurking in my baking cupboard, and they're cheap as chips on Vinted...)?

I have been watching archival interviews on YouTube with some of the show's creators. The reversal of the roles of Blanche and Rose is true. Also, Bea Arthur did ask at one point for them tone down the Dorothy-is-mannish-and-unacttrative jokes, and they did. There are fewer of them in the later seasons.

The show remains one of my all time favorites. They were not afraid to take on some serious issues as well.

Last night I watched the episode which turns out all to have been Blanche's dream, so the writers were really able to go to town with Sophia and Rose's tall tales. I was absolutely crying during the St Olaf story.

It also passes the bechdel test on almost every episode.
It is utterly brilliant

@RitaIncognita

Yes the Dorothy-is-ugly jokes do make me cringe sometimes (even though they're well-written), because I genuinely find her to be the best looking / most stylish, and I also think it was Bea Arthur's most attractive era. The way she carries her clothes - just gorgeous. I hope I look like her one day.
