How high end to go for gym wear to fit in?

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/03/2026 18:22

Hi, I’ve just joined our local David Lloyd gym - for a small fortune - and want advice on gym wear! Currently I wear next power leggings and an old baggy top but I only do walking and home workouts.

I would like to ‘fit in’ but just blend in ideally. I’m not a take-pictures-in-the-mirror gym goer, but I don’t want to look scraggy either!

I’m going to need 2 x leggings, a high impact sports bra, a good pair of trainers, socks and 2 x t shirts. Also a gym bag, water bottle and probably a padlock 😁 is Stanley still a thing?

Which brands do I go for? Colours? Budget isn’t a huge consideration but I do have a mortgage to pay for. I don’t really want to be paying sweaty betty prices, but if that’s what i need to do 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ll also need some sort of costume that says swim, not beach!

Currently 5”3 and a size 14-16, although this is definitely going down rather than up! And I’m 37, but fairly young looking.

please help!!

@DancingNotDrowning please could you link me the vest if you have time?

It’s here: https://www.wearetala.com/en-eu/products/dayflex-v-neck-vest-americano-1

I think it’s going to be too busty for me, but I cannot seems to find tight wide strap vests anywhere which aren’t cropped. If anyone has ideas let me know!

DayFlex V Neck Vest - Americano

The vest version of our "boob job" bra. All the support & all the lift

I really like H&M activewear, it’s good quality and stylish. But my cheapo sinophant leggings from Amazon are fabulous and I wear them for running - not even a hint of falling down.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 09/03/2026 21:53

LNDR is good.

swingingbytheseat · 09/03/2026 21:58

Sweaty betty leggings / bottoms last for years, definitely an investment. Agree save your money for good trainers! Enjoy !!

schoolsoutforever · 09/03/2026 22:00

Honestly, if you wear black gym leggings then I don't know why people spend £100 on them (I guess they can afford to, but its unnecessary). I use Uniqlo ones for about £20, they don't move, feel good and I don't worry about how I look. I go for a slim fit t shirt with these. Prefer that to vests but that depends on your body type. Most people at gyms are too busy working out (or looking at themselves) to notice.

cathyandclaire · 09/03/2026 22:08

Agree with the dark colour comment- DD says everyone at her gym wears black. I was at David Lloyd, now in a London gym- the first time anyone commented on my gym kit ( a few people asked where it was from) was when I was wearing Tesco Florence and Fred. The fabric is amazing and v reasonable.

I was going to ask the same ☺️

Where do large chested ladies buy swimwear for swimming pool visits? (As opposed to beach/holiday)
Sorry to highjack you post OP 🌸

thetroubleistheytastesogood · 09/03/2026 22:12

Matalan’s patterned leggings are worth a browse too. Mine have washed better and stayed up better than my SB’s.

Just seen the link. Have you tried New Balance? They often do wider strap vests that are a bit more covered up ☺️

coginamachine · 09/03/2026 22:13

I’m in the gym most days and I like to wear quality gear and I’m happy to pay for brands that I know both last and fit well. Sweaty Betty power leggings over Lulu lemon any day for me. But I know others who are lifelong LLL and who now adore Amazon’s dupe brand of this Crz yoga, same product range but half the price. I also really like
LNDR. I enjoy buying sets and matching items with socks, store 6 outfits ready to go in my drawer, one for each training day, no need to think just grab and go.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/03/2026 22:15

I’ve seen LNDR advertised and like the idea it appears to lean heavily towards training practicality rather than aesthetics - what is the quality like?

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 09/03/2026 22:16

Honestly no one will care

I like Sweaty Betty leggings for the fit, get them off vinted

All my tops are Adidas racer back vests that are still going after more than 10 years

I love Shock Absorber run bras for high impact

TheGirlWhoLived · 09/03/2026 22:17

Please do @Beatriz85 I am eager to find the answer too! Currently 38F and everything looks like it might fall out of my current deep v. I’ve looked at the speedos but they don’t look like they would fit my boobs in!!

I’ve had a look but nothing suitable

I cannot be the only woman in the world who wants a tight vest that matches her leggings that she can wear a sports bra under without a tangle of straps on display and that covers her midriff?

I don’t think im asking for much!

workingcocker · 09/03/2026 22:24

I’m a self confessed twat and love poncing about in my Lululemon and Gymshark gear with Hoka Trainers. I’m always colour matched too with water bottles etc.

It makes me feel good and I’ve leant not to care what people think 🤣

user1471548941 · 09/03/2026 22:27

For the swimwear, Bravissimo have a collaboration with Speedo for larger sizes. Found on Bravissimo’s website!

We go to David Lloyd. Don't get too excited. They are crap at mending broken machines, the toilets are often out of order, you can never book a tennis court or get in a class.
Half the people who use the gym (and do the posing and pouting nonsense) don't re-rack their weights and don't wipe stuff down.
If you're going to the gym to be healthy and improve your strength then who cares what you're wearing?

Totally this. I’ve been a member at DL for 15 years and the same old issues all the time. I do like it though and the classes and the spa are great.

calm down OP. No one will care what you’re wearing. I have one pair of Sweaty Betty leggings and I wear free T shirts from 10ks / other runs I’ve done in the past. I do like the M&S Goodnove range as others have said. Get yourself your own water bottle that the kids aren’t allowed to use and off you go.

TokyoSushi · 09/03/2026 22:28

I go to DL, you need to be careful not to go too far the other way, you also fairly often see those in top to toe Alo, Liforme yoga mat, Stanley water bottle etc etc then have no idea how to do the class, don’t want to learn and quit really early on…

A fancy outfit does not a successful gym career make!

Honestly, nobody cares what you wear, Vinted is great for Sweaty Betty, Adanola etc, but just enjoy yourself and you’ll be absolutely fine!

Slothlydoesit · 09/03/2026 22:29

Also a member and agree absolutely no one cares. I wear Lululemon leggings that I’ve had for 10 years or so & a h&M t shirt. There are some people posing but they’re mostly under 21 & they don’t wear much!

Most of the normal people between 25 and 60 wear non-trendy workout gear and are just there using the gym.

Reachforthestars00 · 09/03/2026 23:15

I'm not a DL member, but highly recommend Sweaty Betty power leggings and Funikta swimsuits.

LadyWiddiothethird · 09/03/2026 23:20

I am a member at a Tier 2 DL Club,I wear Sainsbury’s gym trousers and tops and Asda swimsuits.I don’t think many people look at what others are wearing, the members at my club are to self-centred.

I haven't bought it for a few years but I had some amazing gym wear from Matalan - bought new and secondhand from ebay. I only passed it on (after years of wearing it) because I fancied something new, plus I had to finally concede the full length tights were actually too long for my short legs.

Comefromaway · 09/03/2026 23:27

My daughter swears by Nike but likes lululemon too (but only has 1 pair of leggings due to cost) - she’s a serious gym person. She wouldn’t be seen dead in Alo Yoga - poor quality at a high price.

women my age tend to like Swetty Betty as it’s quite forgiving on the figure

It's the holiest of grails. If you do find such an item please make a s+b service announcement
