What should a 4 year old wear to a black tie do?

Spaceman · 17/06/2008 13:52

My DH thinks our DD should be in a sparkly number - a bit like the chiffon ones you see in Monsoon, but I don't want to make her look like a bridesmaid (it's for a wedding and she isn't a bridesmaid) or a 'little adult'. I thought something like this: www.justdresses.co.uk/index.php?inc=5&drid=612
but DH thinks it's not glam enough.

Not to be outdone DH has already bought DS (six weeks old - will be three months at the time of the event) a mini tuxedo (black trousers, bowtie and waistcoat).

Advice on the girl's dress would be great.

It's not bad spaceman - your choice - but i would think rather a summer outdoor wedding - more stately home than a black tie do by which I presume you mean in a glam hotel and probably in the evening. In which case I agree with your dh. In my circle of friends when childrne go to black tie weddings even if they're not bridesmaids ( which most arent') they still drss up glittery and sparkly. Adams have nice glittery pink shoes in btw.

Sounds lovely - enjoy!

MrsBadger · 17/06/2008 14:00

the dress you like looks fine but there will be lots of sparkly bridesmaid-a-likes there - will dd mind being in a 'day' dress at an 'evening' do?

And tbh I would 'lose' the baby dj, or at least make sure he outgrows it. They are vile and uncomfortable for such a tiddler.

SheherazadetheGoat · 17/06/2008 14:01

dress you linked to is lovely. how old is she?

lol@ ds in a mini tuxedo.

lisalisa · 17/06/2008 14:02

i also wouldn't do mini tux for such a young baby. If your dh wants a suit I would do linen trousers and soft cashmere type top which will still look very special ( evne though no-one will really notice what such a young baby is wearing) especially if you get it in soft colours like pale grey or caramel but will be more comfy.

MrsBadger · 17/06/2008 14:06

cashmere isn't worth it on a 3mo, even for a posh do

if you want to dress him up better to go for a plain white babygrow and an ancestral lacy shawl...

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 14:08

My daughter had a red silk velvet dress with a gold trim and gold start-rite style shoes (with a little button) this winter, for parties; and we have just bought her a long green tulle dress with smocked bodice and tie-straps for summer parties.

MrsBadger · 17/06/2008 14:10

or Rachel Riley rompers

(they have a rather fine white babygrow with a crown on the front for only £44 [gak])

Spaceman · 17/06/2008 14:11

my thoughts exactly re the tux lisa, and i had a linen one lined up but dh was adament. I'll make sure he's out of it as soon as we've made our entrance!

I think you're probably right regarding the dress. It's pretty commonplace to go for the sequined number nowadays and she is a little girl who LOVES to dress up. I just need to find one now as there are going to be a lot of children there and I just know everyone will head for Monsoon. I don't want her to be in the same outfit as another child (GOD FORBID )

DD will be 3 and 11 months when the date arrives.

jigsaw do lovely party dresses if you feel flush.

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 14:14

Agree with your DH that the dress you linked to isn't glamorous enough for black tie.

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 14:16

Where do you live? Bonpoint do the most gorgeous (expensive) girls dresses, but I think that they aren't outside London in the UK.

Anna8888 · 17/06/2008 14:20

I like this for a four year old - needs gold/silver shoes, possibly hair accessories...

traceybath · 17/06/2008 14:20

There's a bonpoint at bicester outlet village if you're near there at all.

Spaceman · 17/06/2008 14:30

Do Bonpoint have a website? I'm in the Thames Valley so Bicester is an option but time is running out and I'm already behind just having had the baba: A day trip there may not be possible now.

I like that dress too; that website is a good one. I'll also have a look at Jigsaw. I can see things getting expensive and the way it's looking the kids outfits will be more expensive than mine!! certainly more expensive than my DH's who is wearing the same tux he's had for thirteen years.

No Bonpoint online store.

I really like that first one. Definately an option.

I like that dress for a non-black-tie wedding, but if the dress code is black tie then everyone will be dressed more formally even though none of them are bridesmaids.

Maybe something like this or this? Not too sparkly-bridesmaid, still little-girly, but a bit more formal.

PortAndLemon · 17/06/2008 16:44

Oooh, but I do like DisplacementActivity's first suggestion.

bettybeetroot · 17/06/2008 17:51

I agree about not dressing her like a 'little' adult. I think you should go with something pretty and girly - cotton or linen - nothing to shiney as lot's of little girls party dresses look a bit too tacky imo. Jigsaw at Bicester village does have a good selection sometimes. I love Noa Noa stuff for girls but i don't think there are many stockists so that doesn't help! Please don't let your dh put ds in a suit! A little 3 mnth old will look cute in anythuing (but a suit) a trendy little romper?

Heifer · 17/06/2008 18:15

I like this one

not something I would have normally have picked but seems ideal for an evening do and definately not bridesmaidsish

Spaceman I think you have picked is gorgeous, its pretty and dressed up without being uncomfortable.I don't go a bundle on small girls being dressed like mini adults, they are children and their natural desire is to smear wedding cake on their clothes and bum slide on the dancefloor which they can't do if in precious stiff itchy items.

Hulababy · 17/06/2008 19:44

DD has the Monsoon dress - Marianne - already linked too. It does look lovely on, and there is a matching bag int he same fabric. We also got DD a lovely sun hat, hair accessories and shoes to go with it, also from Monsoon.
