Want to invest in a great shampoo

Goodmorningmn · 06/03/2026 09:33

I am turning 40 soon and I have decided this year will be the year I invest in myself!

So with that in mind I am looking for a great shampoo/conditioner, salon style! I have pretty thin hair and it’s just a bit dull, it never looks that different. I did buy a style hairdryer which I like but I would love more volume and shine.

Any ideas? thank you!

I have been using L’Oreal Professional range and I like it, it’s improved my hair. I have also used Kerastase in the past but I think it’s very expensive and some of the scents are slightly artificial/plasticky for my liking.

NewYearNewMee · 06/03/2026 09:57

I would take a look at the abbey yung method and the UK equivalent products - it’s a game changer for glossy hair etc!

holidayonkirrinisland · 06/03/2026 11:31

Have a look at Kerastase and Philip Kingsley: both have ranges for thin hair.

dubbie · 06/03/2026 11:47

I have thin hair and always buy professional shampoos. Don't really care how much they cost as they last for such a long time.

Several years ago I realised that I was using far too much shampoo and it wasn't doing my hair any good. I use the absolute minimum of shampoo, don't agitate my hair too much by washing roughly and what a difference it has made.

I now only use shampoo every third wash. (Still have to wet hair on second and third day so still under shower) but no shampoo. Have 2 or 3 different shampoos on the go at the same time so alternate between them.

Aveda or Keratase. I’m using Aesop at the moment which I’m not sure does much for my hair but it smells lovely. I also have some Davines styling products and whilst I haven’t used their shampoo and conditioners I hear good things.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/03/2026 12:32

L'Occitane do some lovely shampoos.
I also use the Faith in Nature Rosemary shampoo & Olail Rosemary infusion shampoo.
As pp, alternate them.

Maria Nila shampoo and conditioners are really great

EverythingIsComputer · 06/03/2026 12:39

Davines, Aveda, Coco & Eve, Kerastase and Philip Kingsley are my favourite pricier brands but I also really like Klorane

Pureology Hydrate has been a game changer shampoo for my dull, dry menopausal hair,- lasts for ages!

I always shampoo twice, every few washes I will do the first shampoo with the Aveeno apple cider vinegar one for a clarify.

I really like the Elvive Bond Repair range - I use the whole lot once a week, pre-shampoo, shampoo, conditioner and leave-in serum and it always leaves my hair shiny and full of body (by its own meagre standards 😄). I use something cheaper for the washes in between to save money and avoid build-up. Aussum Volume range isn't bad.

1emma19 · 06/03/2026 17:37

Hi! Here's what to look for ingredient-wise. For volume, you want lightweight proteins like hydrolyzed wheat protein or keratin that strengthen hair without weighing it down, and VP/VA copolymer or polyquaternium-11 that coat the hair shaft to make it appear thicker. For shine, look for ingredients like panthenol, hydrolyzed silk, or lightweight oils like argan or camellia seed oil, but avoid heavy butters and oils like shea or coconut which will make thin hair look flat and greasy.

Davines is nice. I also bought a posh brand from a salon that I’ve forgotten the name of. L’Occitane kid also nice.

LucyLoo1972 · 06/03/2026 19:19

aveda is wonderful

WarriorN · 06/03/2026 19:23

Also L’Oréal as advised by hair dresser. This is the one I use. Now get the extra large refill shampoo as it works out cheaper

I did like Aveda but I found it very strong smelling.

greenmarsupial · 06/03/2026 20:16

I was sucked in by Routine but have found them really good. My hair feels thicker and it kind of sits better after washing.

saycheeese · 06/03/2026 20:19

Coco and Eve, I use the like a virgin shampoo it's really good and a little goes a long way so even though it is pricey it lasts ages. Have read good things about the L'Oréal professional range also so might try that next.

Flicitytricity · 06/03/2026 20:22

Im in my 60s, tried all kinds of shampoos and conditioners, from cheap to mega bucks.
DiL bought me shampoo and conditioner bars for Xmas, and my God, Amazing.
My hair is in great condition, loosing less hair, and, genuinely, only need to wash hair twice a week for it to look great.
Game changer for me.

What brand please?

Vivienne1000 · 06/03/2026 20:32

Le Labo. My daughter bought me some and it’s gorgeous.

Maria Nila shampoo and conditioners are really great

I second this

mdinbc · 06/03/2026 20:40

You say you have thin hair, but do you mean fine? If so, look for volume building shampoo, such as Philip Kingsley Body Building Weightless, or Ouai Fine Shampoo, or Redken Volume Injection, along with the conditioner in the same line.

Then I would probably use a good mousse for volume and shine, in the same line. It will make your blow out last longer, and add that extra finish.

CheerfulBunny · 06/03/2026 20:54

The pink bottle Redken shampoo and conditioner for volume is gorgeous and smells absolutely amazing. My hair has never looked so good as when I was using that, lasted a surprisingly long time too. I'm biding my time (and using argan oil OGX stuff) until Amazon has it on offer again.

sweetpickle2 · 06/03/2026 21:47

Redken All Soft has changed my life- its expensive but you honestly only need a tiny amount of it so it lasts absolutely ages.
