We're in a nice area and I don't want her to be looked down on as trashy or anything- be blunt tia

@newyorknewyorkforevernewyork Not keen on the logo. It’s not Armani is it? Seriously, just get a plain one!

emilysquest · 06/03/2026 14:13

Personally whether it is me or DS, I don't like big logos on anything and wouldn't buy them. I'm super middle class if it helps. Nearly all DS's everyday clothes, including coats and jackets, are from M&S.

CaffeinatedSeagull · 06/03/2026 12:15

Hard disagree. Others and I were victimised for having wrong brand of coat or trainers at school, and it still goes on now at some schools. Kids can be mean, and they often get that from their parents.

At age 7 though? This definitely happens at secondary school, possibly the last year at primary, but at age 7 I wouldn't have thought this was a thing?

AD1509 · 06/03/2026 14:37

I think Ted Baker is usually seen as trying to be posh but coming across tacky- by the upper /middle classes.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 06/03/2026 14:43

The massive logo spoils it. You could get a really good quality coat for that price. I'd look elsewhere.

newyorknewyorkforevernewyork · 05/03/2026 20:35

I thought that, I was thinking more 11-12 at first sight?

You wouldn’t catch many 11-12 year olds wearing that. It’s all North Face puffers in that age group where I live!

I'm a working class single mum - dd needs to not have any other reasons to be picked on, as harsh a truth as it is 🥺

We've already had comments from someone about 'i have a dad, some children aren't as lucky'

Ironically enough, by the people who wear big labels on their coats 🤔😅

Anyway - I ditched the idea and I am now looking on ebay for jeans for her 😄

It's awful to say, but it doesn't surprise me.

The parents that pick big logo brands for mid primary age kids don't realise how much it makes them stand out as working class. Mum is trying too hard to prove she has money.

Ive said this to my friend to just stop trying as hard. You don't have anything to prove. At primary it's most definitely the less distinctive the better. If it is second hand even more so. Stay away from the brands completely or you will get the wrong brand.

It changes in yr6. And it's the kids themselves who will tell you which brands are hot and which are not. You follow whatever Miss Queen Bee whose mum is on the PTA does. You won't go too far wrong.

Honestly it's bollocks.

At primary school NO ONE cares about brands. Not really. Not in liberal middle class areas. Just avoid obviously Shein cos you will get judged for that.

Tryagain26 · 06/03/2026 15:05

As long as it's warm and comfortable what does it matter? I don't think 7 year olds shouldn't be worried about fashion

PortSalutPlease · 06/03/2026 15:05

It’s not trashy, but nor is it very nice.

shrunkenhead · 06/03/2026 15:07

Logos are no-goes. Just buy a plain black practical waterproof coat. Logos scream trashy. It's the "Burberry effect".

Calliopespa · 06/03/2026 15:14

It is so hard to judge vibes without knowing where you mean op, but at my DC's posh independent schools that obvious branding would be not quite the thing, and also Ted Baker not really the "right" brand. But it is so hard to say as every area has it's own "feel" - and brands obviously have their niche or they wouldn't sell.

There is posh and posh!

It does look cosy so I wouldn't be too harsh if I saw a child cuddled up in it, but if you are worried, my first pick would be something a little "quieter" on the label front.

Calliopespa · 06/03/2026 15:21

But just came back to say, you sound as though you are doing a great job as a single mum op. Don't doubt yourself too much or let idiots get you down!

Edelweiss129 · 06/03/2026 20:05

Buy a more sensible colourful one from M&S. There's time yet for brand snobbery

Boden jackets here.
Then moved onto berghaus. I refuse to pay North Face prices- that's what every kid aged 11 upwards seems to wear here

anon2022anon · 06/03/2026 20:12

I'm in a middle class area, and you'd do much better looking at Boden on Vinted.

If she's 7, do you really need to look at black? Your time is limited for getting her in colour, why not try something brighter?

FakeTwix · 06/03/2026 20:43

My dc all have coats from Vinted. I buy a couple for each season for each child. When I have only paid a few quid then I don't worry too much if they go missing in the play ground!

notacooldad · 06/03/2026 20:47

People judge 😄 -
And what are they going to fo with that judgement.
You dont need to know what everyone thinks.

Anyway, I go into primary schools for my job and it is a typical coat. Ive seen that logo plenty of times as well as others.
In fact I saw a Ted Baker child's coat that I wish thet did in adult sizes a few weeks ago, it was lovely!

Zanatdy · 07/03/2026 04:38

I wouldn’t get something with a big label like that, a plain black coat will be fine.

zebrastripesarefun · 07/03/2026 06:43

I think the Ted baker coat looks very nice. I’ve heard they are very warm and hardwearing and not too expensive.

Revoltingpheasants · 07/03/2026 06:57

You need Joules or Boden Smile

M and S is probably acceptable too.

MrsBridgetMcClusky · 07/03/2026 07:23

I'm not really qualified to post on this thread as I'm working class in a working class area, but I've had gorgeous monsoon coats from Vinted. Very bright, floral patterns to stand out on dreary winter days.

Revoltingpheasants · 07/03/2026 07:29

Monsoon is gorgeous

This was my favourite coat of baby DDs, from a couple of years ago.

I loathe logos on clothes. Other than that the coat is great.
