Hit 50 and look absolutely terrible. I've been ill and put weight on which hasn't helped. Make up helps but just slides off after an hour.
I just look so tired and old and eyes and lips are disappearing.
Any top tips wise mum-netters. I don't want any procedures just something to make me look alive/awake again!

Anyone ? Or is this it? Did have a hair cut which helped but the face is just so damn tired looking.

Water and good food and sleep (unfortunately!!) cleanse, moisturise, eye cream and spf and then a primer and a nice shade of make up/ bb cream. The hair cut was a good start- I bought a new bra the other day and cut and painted toe nails and already feel more human!! Good luck op!!

FunkyMonks · 24/02/2026 17:39

Hi Op I don’t know if it’s still a thing but maybe you could look at a personal shopper experience where they can help you pick out colours and cuts that suit your body get a whole new wardrobe look.
hair cut and colour can help freshen up also would be worth going somewhere like a big boots with various make up counters and getting help/make up to see what best suits your skin and what lasts.
Maybe booking in to have your nails done as a pick me up every so often as a treat.
Also worth looking into moisturiser’s and skin cleansers to help with daily care of your skin.

I keep getting 'reels' on my insta of microblading in older people. They actually look really good and really lift the face. I know you said no proceedures but could you dial up your eyebrow game with a groom and tint?

Greedybilly · 24/02/2026 17:40

Anyone know anything about primer?

OP posts:
FunkyMonks · 24/02/2026 17:42

Also you could look at local gym join fitness class hire a PT, exercise can do wonders for your wellbeing and as previous poster said drink plenty of water and try and eat as healthy as possible and plenty of sleep.

FunkyMonks · 24/02/2026 17:43

Elemis do a good primer as does clarins

socks1107 · 24/02/2026 17:44

Plenty of water helps your skin look fresher. Good sleep and book a make up session with a counter. I love Boots no7 and since switching last year my makeup feels much fresher and looks good

AtIusvue · 24/02/2026 17:47

Pop of colour for lipstick/blush. Nothing too bright but something refreshing.

Only put mascara on the top lashes. Use brown not black.

AngryBird6122 · 24/02/2026 17:52

Are you tired? Or just look it?

Are you sleeping well? Had any bloods done lately?

Greedybilly · 24/02/2026 18:00

Thanks for all comments - I do drink lots of water/eat quite well but look like I live on coke and Gregg's pasties.V unfair. Been v poorly with long covid which hasn't helped.

If you google primers for mature skin, I use either glossier or Aimee Connolly moisturising primer, am 46 with very dry, quite red skin. I used to use clarins beauty flash balm but it suddenly started disagreeing with me, maybelline, L’Oréal, essence, catrice, benefit never worked, as skin was too dry and sensitive. I’d love to try Charlotte tilbury but can’t justify price if I don’t know how my skin will cope!

Greedybilly · 24/02/2026 18:09

@Morepositivemumtthanks will have a look.x

Hi op sorry to hear about long Covid sounds awful.
I use primer from primark in a cream coloured jar. Dd2 got it for me it’s pretty good.
you need a more powder based make up. I use no 7 pressed powder it has loads of coverage.
i get my eye brows microbladed once a year and use tanning drops the ordinary Superdrug own brand. Small changes but dent results.
we need a pic for more specialist advice xx

Anyone know anything about primer?

Elf power grip primer!
Without this my foundation will have disappeared within a couple of hours. No touch ups needed all day.
Edit: I'm the same age as you with combination skin, avoid powders as these will settle in fine lines.

JacknDiane · 24/02/2026 18:16

Thanks for the thread op, im the same.
I recently bought eporian cc cream, as recommended on here. Its lovely and very natural looking. Im yet to buy blush and lippy, or mascara. Im trying to get used to the cc cream first.

Im not sure about primer, id be interested in why we need it, does it brighten your face up? Surely on top of moisturiser, under foundation, would be too greasy for most folk?

Greedybilly · 24/02/2026 18:17

@Jamfirstest--thanku! It's the most awful illness. Thanku for tips too.x

Im off to Google tanning drops and microblading, learning a lot here!

JacknDiane · 24/02/2026 18:27

Microblading looks awful sore 😞

Greedybilly · 24/02/2026 18:32

@JacknDianeI agree! Looks awful.

The Covid aftermath can be utterly vile. You have my sympathy.

Have you had any blood tests lately? Illness can leave you very nutritionally and hormonally depleted and it may be that you need a prescription for a vitamin or two.

Theringcycle · 24/02/2026 18:41

Some subtle lash clusters? I swear by them having first tried them in my late forties. I get mine from Amor.

Morepositivemum · 24/02/2026 18:52

JacknDiane

I’ve very dry skin and without primer even after moisturiser make up just looks caked, I’ve friends with oily skin that use it as their make up slides off, primer’s like evening out your skin to make it more like a canvas (for me, I know some people who don’t wear it and they look fine!)

Bristolandlazy · 24/02/2026 19:03

The primer I use fills my pores and sits on top of your skin, it washes off when I take my make up off. It's good,v it's like filler. I'm 53 and feel like my features are disappearing, I used to laugh at my nan having a blue rinse when I was little but I kind of get it. I feel like the whites of my eyes aren't as bright, my teeth aren't as white and I dye my hair. My mum wears bright colours and I can see why you liven herself up.
