Hit 50 and look absolutely terrible. I've been ill and put weight on which hasn't helped. Make up helps but just slides off after an hour.
I just look so tired and old and eyes and lips are disappearing.
Any top tips wise mum-netters. I don't want any procedures just something to make me look alive/awake again!

Waiting two years for hip operations with lots of pain has knocked the stuffing out of me. I have lost weight. Agree with others, sleep a good hairstyle, completely different make up, different colour palette clothes wise was called for.

Hi, l am the same age, last year l had a horrific year with my skin and looking tired, sore and dry. I got a grip of it with changing my skincare routine and had to change all my products. When l got my skin under control and went back to my make up it went back to being dry so l went through the whole process again, for 4 months l didn’t wear make up. I also started taking collagen last year, which l think really helped.

In January l had an opportunity to have a micro needling facial, it didn’t hurt except for the tip on my nose my face was red for maybe two days, l can tell you it was worth it l paid £55 and l am going to have another one in April or May.l also do myself to face packs a week, it’s my down time and little escape, l also make sure l do my skin routine 2/3 time a day, morning/after work and nighttime if l have been out.l have had loads of complements since l had it done.

l agree with the pp’s that say eyebrows and haircut make a huge difference, No one has mentioned your lips, before Christmas l was a model for having my lips tattooed, they are not bright just a deeper colour and you can see my lips more, this did sting a bit but settled after 2/3 days.

l am a very low maintenance person, l also stopped using heavy makeups and l use skin tint from super drug it’s £6.99 and oh my lord it’s just so light and beautiful.

Good Luck.

I'd focus on getting plenty of sleep, eating a good diet with plenty of protein & veg, and starting gentle exercise. It will improve your posture, reduce your stress level and freshen your complexion.
A good haircut and some clothes that fit you now, but don't throw your smaller size clothes away.
Make a conscious effort to be kind to yourself.

Best thing for skin is quitting alcohol. I only drink about three or four times a year and am so shocked by the state of my skin afterwards.

I was thinking about an air purifier. With heating on and windows shut it can't be good for us. At night we often open the top window in the bedroom which is chilly but I think better for sleeping

Greedybilly · 25/02/2026 11:19

Thanks for all replies - I don't drink and do drink loads of water/eat healthily which is one reason why I'm so miffed!

I definitely agree with the lash clusters. I've also seen great improvement using a combination of tretinoin and an LED panel, and I believe volufilene from the ordinary is helping my lips. A flattering hairstyle and glasses of you wear them really do wonders, too

I am deep in peri, my hair is almost completely grey and wild in texture, my eyebrows disappeared and my lashes are almost nonexistent.

Things that have helped:

Elf primer and urban decay setting spray.

John Lewis for make up, multiple counters and you can ask for testers or have something applied to try it. Don’t be shy, go when it’s quiet.

Very regular hair cuts and colour. Costs a fortune but really does help keep the huge hair in check.

Always having something on my lips, even just a coloured balm.

Regular facials, deep cleaning, hydro facial works.

Botox to keep things smooth not frozen (noticeable difference).

I use Medik8 retinol and lots of moisturiser but I don’t know if they make a lot of difference.

Eyebrows have been microbladed. It was painful but it has made a HUGE difference. I also dye the hair that remains to give it some
body.

Really good tubing mascara, I use the UKlash one in brown.

My wardrobe now is a very simple pallet of colours - blacks, navy, greys, and browns. No patterns, classic cuts, and good tailoring. I always make sure everything is clean and ironed well. It helps to hide the tired!

For my body, height etc it looks so much better than trying to carry off high fashion or the fat face/joules style clothes that are targeted at my age group. I put all of that in the bin recently and I haven’t missed it.

iloveagoodlist · 25/02/2026 16:53

Oh and I don’t drink, I go to the gym 4/5 times a week, lots of water and protein etc.

BUT I was doing all of that anyway before I took action last year and started doing more than just washing my face. Upped the hair cuts, got Botox etc

Did this dry your skin out? I really struggle with dry skin and don’t want to make it worse.

Hotel air conditioning being on overnight is the worst for me.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/02/2026 17:01

Concealer and blusher is key for me.

canuckup · 25/02/2026 17:30

Only wear colours that suit you

Loads of water

Plenty of moisturiser

Load up on fruit and vegetables

MrsTrefusis · 25/02/2026 18:01

i dont think you need to spend a lot on primer. The ones in Boots are fine. But yes it definitely helps. Also eye primer if you are wearing eyeshadow or liner helps too.
bronzer is a good wake-up when you get the colour right.

Greedybilly · 25/02/2026 22:02

O k thanks for all the ideas/info.
Have lots of googling to do now!

I recently bought the Wonderskin plush stick which is meant to adjust to your skin tone to give a natural look and I do really like it so it’s worth a look if you’re looking for a blush and not sure about colour.
