What's the opinion on Vans trainers on a 40 something woman?

I'm on the hunt for some new trainers as all mine are passed their best . On the off chance, I tried a pair of vans on in a store and they were so comfy. I've seen a cheaper , purple suede pair of Authentics in the clearance section of the website that I'm very tempted with.

My main questions are will I look like an overgrown teenager?

How are they for quality?

If they go with the rest of what you are wearing then what has age got to do with it?

Wear what you want I say! 😆 I’m 43 and have a varied collection of trainers - including 3 pairs of platform converse, NB 9060, NB 327s and many more! My husband is a massive Vans fan, he has several different pairs! I also live in sports leggings and oversized hoodies (including white fox and Blakley)…..I don’t really care what anyone else thinks! 🤣

Dh has vans too . He seems to wear through shoes rather quickly, which is why I was unsure of quality.

I find the old skool ones a bit masculine for me , I think they'd make my feet look huge too .

Why can't you wear colour near your face? 🤔

I prefer neutrals.

Any colour I have is accessories.

Nobody should dictate what you wear. It’s a myth. Wear what you want.

AldiLidlDeeDee · 22/02/2026 08:47

I mostly wear Sketchers and occasionally socks with sandals sometimes if it’s a bit chilly.
IDGAF. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣

TinyR3bel · 22/02/2026 08:47

I’m 41 and always had a thing for trainers. I like to wear new quirky ones no one else is wearing (yet!) I work in the creative industries so I can probably get away with anything to be honest! Just wear. what makes you happy!

Nanda66 · 22/02/2026 08:48

Wear what you want. I’m getting near 60 and I’ll wear what I want. Life is short.

I’ve got a couple of pairs of Vans but haven’t worn them much recently as they’re not very in style and don’t go with my current favourite clothes. They’re also my LEAST comfortable trainers, they’re so flat.

I like the fact they aren't currently high fashion. Everyone round here seems to wear Adidas.

Who cares? Wear what you want.

can’t bear this “too old” to have long hair, wear x, y, z crap. If I like it and it’s comfy, I’ll wear it. Anyone wants to judge, that’s on them.

Exactly this. I always think WTF..

I def wore converse in my 30s40s. I don’t find them that comfortable but I’m def a trainers person, although wear boots in the winter mainly. An mid-50s.

I wear boots in the winter too.

It's time to start thinking about trainers .

They're not to my taste - even in the 00s they were too "sk8er boi" for me but if you like them then go for it!

TwistedWonder · 22/02/2026 08:53

I like Vans visually but they’re too flat for ne. But age is irrelevant.
Im 60 and I wear Adidas Bold - the Gazelles with thick platform like soles. I haven’t worn or owned shoes since pre lockdown

I know what you mean. They were worn by teens who all liked a certain type of music. I didn't wear them back then either.

I suppose those skater teens are getting close to 40 now .

That's fine if that's what you prefer, but age is irrelevant. I am 54 and wear all the colours!

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:05

@MairzydotesI think they’ve always been for that kind of crowd really, Vans is a skating brand.

mondaytosunday · 22/02/2026 09:09

My son would tell you no teenager would be caught dead in Vans. Go ahead.

lol they’re a lot older than 40- dh is 60 and he was the “skater crowd” when he was in his teens.

still skateboards, still wears vans.

nothing to do with music per se, dh has a very wide taste. All about the soles on vans and the grip on the board apparently.

Scoose · 22/02/2026 09:11

I'm 44 my uniform is vans trainers black jeans and a band t shirt

NeedWineNow · 22/02/2026 09:13

Go for it! I'm 63 and love my Vans - limited edition Foo Fighters hi-tops released for their 25th anniversary. They are more comfortable for me than Converse as they are a bit wider. I also like the Fila trainers that are similar to Converse, again because they are a bit wider.

I don't go along with this idea that you're too old for things.

PepsiBook · 22/02/2026 09:14

Wear what makes you happy.i doubt anyone would look at your shoes and have any option other than they do/don't like them.

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:14

And that’s what I mean by me not being in the style for them any more really. When my wardrobe consisted more of vest top, or band top, and skinnies the overall vibe suited Vans. I’m in my beige knitwear era right now so it doesn’t really have the right vibe! Vans always were and will be a skating brand, and I don’t fit that vibe much these days! I just think they must look quite out of place with most other outfits?

What would you wear them with?

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:14

(So yeah it’s not about age, but the rest of the outfit)

Electricsausages · 22/02/2026 09:27

i find rocket dogs more comfy than converse and they have loads of patterns
idgaf what others think either

Oh,I was thinking more of the Avril Levinge era lol.

Interesting point about grippy soles, although on the website, some styles look as though they are marketed as fashion trainers.

I've had rocket dog too , although they only do whole sizes , so not the best fit for me .

I got them rather reasonably from M&M Direct, which is where I've bought Superga in the past . They have Vans too, but not many in my size .
