Hat/fascinator that works in 2026?

Situation: garden party. Hat or fascinator strongly recommended. I did have one I loved by Cherry Chau with feathers on wires, but I bought that about 30 years ago and I’ve noticed that headgear has disappeared from weddings. Is it possible to wear something like this without looking completely dated?

Probably going to wear purple silk maxi dress.

I love hats and I’m sad we wear less of them these days. There are interesting makers on Etsy but I’ve no idea what in.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2026 15:50

Maybe you could get this deleted and start again without the ageism in the title?

I’d suggest, ‘Can you find me a posh hat that won’t make me look a prize pillock?’ or something of that ilk.

TheLeadbetterLife · 20/02/2026 15:50

I don't like fascinators (they just make me think of Beatrice and Eugenie in The Windsors), but hats can be very cool (and practical in the sun). I'd go for a Spanish or Portuguese style wide-brimmed equestrian one, like these:

What style is your dress OP ?

CMOTDibbler · 20/02/2026 16:05

You just need to try lots on to see what works on you. I’m tall and broad shouldered and can wear really extravagant hats, but look terrible in fascinators or halo headbands. The milliner I go to hires them out, and has 300 or so to choose from so you just try until you find what you like and she’s super helpful on picking the right hat for the occasion. If you can get to Cheltenham, she’s Lisa Von Hallwyl.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 20/02/2026 16:06

An actual hat, or a very fancy hair comb alternative may work.

I don’t think it’s ageist to say that certain looks have an ageing effect.

Tortephant · 20/02/2026 16:10

Hat all day every day, not a fascinator.
Go into a few hat hire places and try some on, you will quickly work out what suits you.

Contrarymary30 · 20/02/2026 16:14

I've never seen anyone not look ridiculous in a fascinator. If you must ,just find a hat which looks OK. Headgear seems to be out of fashion .

ChanelLove · 20/02/2026 16:20

Oh I love hats. My advice is be bold- apologetic hats and fascinators never look good. Honestly I even liked the Beatrice loo seat hat.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 20/02/2026 16:22

Firstly, I have no idea what is ageist about your title lol. Secondly, agree that fascinators are extremely hard to pull off anymore, especially if your vibe isn’t vintage 40/50s. Would a cute embellished headband do instead?

Shutuptrevor · 20/02/2026 16:22

I think different rules apply at a garden party tbh- where most guests are in them, I don’t think either are necessarily aging.

Mauro711 · 20/02/2026 16:26

I like big floppy hats and they are not ageing in the least.

PermanentTemporary · 20/02/2026 16:33

This is all so helpful! Dress pic attached (white thing is a security thing, I’m definitely keeping it). It is quite dark for a garden party so a hat may help.

Don’t be silly it’s not ageist in the slightest.

MabelAnderson · 20/02/2026 16:49

I have that dress, I will go and look for something complementary, easy for me to judge !

MabelAnderson · 20/02/2026 16:52

On the website they were teamed with very large straw hats, and I think they worked well, but it would also work with a headdress type of thing.

MabelAnderson · 20/02/2026 16:58

So if I needed to wear a hat with it, I would probably team it with a large straw hat as they did on the website, here is one on Etsy , that has a soft brim you can fold up as suits you. Or something small but airy like this , also on Etsy. Gold would work well with the violet too. If you are small height wise I would go for the small headdress rather than the large brim, but you know what suits you.

I loved cherry chau back in the day too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2026 17:12

Of course it’s ageist. If you don’t think it is, you’re part of the problem.

No one wants to look 30 years older and you are part of the problem as you detract from real ageism if you make silly accusations.

Yes I am always pulling people up on ageism on threads. Saying you don't want to look 30 years older is not ageist at all. Who does? Actually if I looked 30 years older I would probably look like a corpse.

LouisaMayAlcott · 20/02/2026 17:29

I have a Cherry Chau feathers/flowers on wire head dress and I still wear it when I can. I’ve never found anything else as lovely! Having said that I’m going to an outside wedding in Australia so I’ve got to find a sun hat that I can pack and will double as a wedding hat. Moon on a stick!

Floisme · 20/02/2026 18:05

I think we all know perfectly well, don't we, that no hat / fascinator will literally make you look 30 years older? So I'm going to take a punt that this wasn't the real question and that it was instead code for, 'Will I look old fashioned if I wear a hat or fascinator?'

I will leave the op to ponder - if she so wishes of course - about why she chose to word it in the way she did, and equally I'll let posters decide for themselves - again if they so wish - why some of them are laying into Remus rather than admit that they understood exactly what was meant.

To answer the real question, op, I love a hat but not only do I think fascinators look dated, (even at weddings and garden parties, which have their own rules) I also think they carry a bit of a Royal Family vibe which, I dunno, you might be seeking to avoid right now. (Unless of course it's a Royal Garden Party? Now that would be fascinating...)

I would personally go for a 1950s cocktail hat which I think would be occasion appropriate without all those rather awkward connotations. Have a good time.

PermanentTemporary · 20/02/2026 18:24

Right, I’ll accept that it was ageist, having queried what was in my head. I will ask for an edit. Apologies.

Thank you for all suggestions and @MabelAnderson those look great.
