Suit for Daughter's Year 11 Prom

I'm pretty clueless about style and fashion and my 16yo is even more clueless, so hoping to pick up some tips! My daughter is thinking of wearing a trouser suit for her prom.

I'm just not sure where to start getting one, what to look for or what to wear with it. Obviously you can get women's trousers suits loads of places, and they seem to suit her. But how do you make it look like she's going to a prom not an office?

Any tips, ideas etc for those whose daughters wore trousers, or just those with more fashion sense than me, gratefully received.

She doesn't like shopping and wouldn't want me to spend a small fortune, as it just isn't important enough to her, but I'd love her to look and feel good, as she's not the most confident and I know some of her friends will be on beautiful dresses.

Hi op what size is your daughter? Pretty little thing and boohoo have blazer and trousers ranging from oversized blazers to slim fitted. Their sizing is from size 4 onwards I think. She could go for a plain suit with a sparkly top underneath so it adds ABIT of glamour rather than office look and maybe add sparkly shoes to match the top. Suits can look really nice if added with the right top, shoes and accessories or have you thought about a jumpsuit maybe? I tend to go with a jumpsuit when in doubt on what to where to events.

Simplelobsterhat · 19/02/2026 17:56

Thanks. She's petite. Probably size 8 and 5ft2, small chested but does have hips.

Sparkly top was my first thought to make her look less like she's going to work, but wasn't sure if that was a bit 'mums night out'. And she's not a girly girl at all so she may well think sparkly top / shoes defeats the object of the trouser suit.

What about a jumpsuit?

I will suggest jumpsuits and see what she thinks. I suspect the one in the link might be a bit too much like a dress, although I think that would look great! She definitely leans towards boyish. Short hair. Has never worn make up or heels unless it was for fancy dress where she was 'being someone else '.

I think it looks great when a girl wears a suit to the prom. Very stylish. It’s what I would have done had I had one!
I think the fabric of the suit would stop it from looking too “office”. And other things like shoes and hair more “evening “.

Edited

Next has hundreds all in different colours and styles.

Whatever she wears she needs to feel comfortable and like herself.

Please consider charity shops and other pre-owned clothing, for what is a one-off use.

I'd love to, and will certainly look on vinted etc, but the thought of the number of charity shops we'd probably have to trawl through to find something she liked that fitted her, when she hates shopping, puts me off that route!
I suppose she may at least be more likely to get another wear out of a suit than a dress.

Absolutely, that's the aim. It's just she has so little interest in clothes normally she has no idea where to start finding that!

I feel like anecdotally I hear people say it's not uncommon for girls to wear suits to prom now, but I don't seem to be able to find anyone who has actually done it or even photos of anyone to get an idea what that looks like in practice - shirts and ties like the boys, or something else?

Maybe get her to google 'women suit formal / evening wear/ wedding' for some ideas.

Is she wanting to look masculine in a suit (dark suit, loafers, collared shirt and possibly tie) or is she looking for a femme looking evening wear kind of suit (more interesting colours, flowy fabric, perhaps heels, sparkly top etc)

Griselinia · 19/02/2026 18:24

I would like at celeb red carpet/event suit outfits and get her to Pinterest or whatever the kids do nowadays. Even if you don't find a good high street dupe you'll still have ideas on how to style what you do find.

Simplelobsterhat · 19/02/2026 18:24

I think I need to have that chat with her again, she's just said she doesn't know when I've asked before. But I think she'd probably lean towards more androgynous.

OP posts:
Simplelobsterhat · 19/02/2026 18:27

She definitely won't want a really low cut look which seems to be what most of our Google examples found - jackets with nothing visible under them etc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/02/2026 18:31

I don’t think a jumpsuit will work if she’s wanting to be androgynous.

Would she do a trouser suit with a cami and sparkly Converse or DMs perhaps?

SilenceInside · 19/02/2026 18:32

She could wear a bustier type top underneath a suit jacket, like some of these ones:

Could be as plain or as fancy as she prefers.

Greedybilly · 19/02/2026 18:36

My daughter wore a suit from Next and looked and felt amazing! Hope urs does the same.x

Comtesse · 19/02/2026 18:36

Would she wear a bright colour or woukd she like something dark? If black is the preference then maybe satin or velvet would make it look more evening.

Classic YSL “le smoking” is a stone cold classic for a reason right?

DD wore a suit to Yr11 prom.
It was black velvet, with gold pattern. Single button and very fitted jacket so midriff was showing. She crocheted a bright red short top for underneath. Teamed with a gold belly chain and killer black heels.
Looked awesome and feminine

Thanks. I was actually looking at disturbia. Some nice stuff. Will show her. I know she wouldn't want killer heels or midriff showing though. She's very 'practical' in her approach to clothes!

One of DS’s friends wore a suit with a gold patterned waistcoat and brogues. She did bold make up and wore statement earring with it and looked fab. She’s also quite androgynous and has short hair.

I have heard of girls wearing a tux
