Suit for Daughter's Year 11 Prom

I'm pretty clueless about style and fashion and my 16yo is even more clueless, so hoping to pick up some tips! My daughter is thinking of wearing a trouser suit for her prom.

I'm just not sure where to start getting one, what to look for or what to wear with it. Obviously you can get women's trousers suits loads of places, and they seem to suit her. But how do you make it look like she's going to a prom not an office?

Any tips, ideas etc for those whose daughters wore trousers, or just those with more fashion sense than me, gratefully received.

She doesn't like shopping and wouldn't want me to spend a small fortune, as it just isn't important enough to her, but I'd love her to look and feel good, as she's not the most confident and I know some of her friends will be on beautiful dresses.

Vinted, look for colours she likes: pinks, greens, light blues, mustards, etc, so it doesn't look so office-y. They should be anywhere from £20-£60. Then something like a vintage band t-shirt underneath, if sparkly top is too "girly" for her style? Shoes can be any classic trainers, and she'll look really cool. Bright nails if she likes, and isn't comfortable with a very "done" make-up look.

Good luck, OP!

A friend of mines daughter went to prom in a beautiful slim fit tuxedo suit last year and instead of shirt and bow tie wore a sparkly silver bustier underneath. She looked amazing and I’m pretty sure it was actually a boys suit but they just found her size equivalent . Good luck!

Only do a band T-shirt if she actually likes the band.

My 6ft tall stepdaughter bought a tuxedo from ASOS, looked incredible and has worn it loads since

Takes me back, I wore a suit to my school leavers ball 37 years ago. Mine was a black jacket with straight leg trousers and black lace ups, worn with a white shirt and white tie. So nothing too feminised iyswim. I had short hair back then, too. I was the only girl not wearing a gown, but I'll wager your DD won't necessarily be. She'll look great however she styles it.

FruAashild · 20/02/2026 15:57

DD is very petite (5'0" and size 4). When she wears a suit she wears a colourful silk shirt under it rather than having a white cotton shirt and tie like a man or a feminine top. And she wears patent leather docs. It's a nicely androgenous look.

If that's still too feminine one of her friends wore a full 3 piece suit, complete with shirt and pastel silk tie with a tie pin and coordinating handkerchief in the pocket plus bracelets and earrings to prom. Conserve hightops on her feet. She looked fabulous. I think a selection of nice jewellery (whether that is cufflinks, watch, rings, tie pin, earrings, bracelets or necklace) is what makes it feel dressed up.

My daughter wore a navy Next suit to prom with a white shirt, waistcoat no tie and very white new trainers. She looked amazing. She’s quite masculine in her look, but does have fairly long hair, so I waved that for a more ‘evening’ look. She’s similar size to your daughter, so got the suit in petite and it fitted really well.

As I say, my daughter wanted to look more masculine. But if your daughter wanted something more feminine she could go for waistcoat and trousers with no shirt?

Good luck - bet she’ll look amazing!

My teenage daughter got a really nice black trouser suit from the women's section in Primark. They had a whole range of mix and match in terms of how tailored you want the jacket - she went for quite a loose jacket and wide legged trousers, but with a fitted waistcoat. And she wore a black satin blouse (again from Primark) under it. The whole thing only cost £70 I think, and she looked amazing!

How about finding a fabulous scarf to wear instead of a tie, like this look from the amazing Siobhan McSweeney? She can wear a simple t-shirt or vest top under the jacket, but the scarf elevates the whole thing. With a black suit, any colour would work.

Oh, a military jacket would be fantastic!

Lots of lovely ideas thank you

A white tuxedo suit would look really classy, and wearable again unlike most prom dresses. A very chic French friend of mine changed into one for her wedding evening do and I thought it was fabulous. Not sure of your budget, but something like this.

My daughter wore a suit from Next and looked and felt amazing! Hope urs does the same.x

Yes, mine did too. It was pale blue, she wore it with a black waistcoat underneath. She had her make up done quite glam though. She wasn't the only one in a suit.

OhDear111 · 21/02/2026 01:02

@Mycatislickinghisbum Moleskin? For a prom? Oh dear! Of course black tux with a sparkly bustier is fab. Don’t think the DD here would be into that.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2026 04:24

No, no, no to that moleskin thing or a white tux.

fruitpastille · 21/02/2026 10:48

My dd wore a next blazer with slim fitting black trousers. She also wore a smart white shirt and black tie (slightly loose at the collar) despite me saying she would look like a waiter. Plus silver jewellery. I'm biased but she looked great. Understated but cool.

We had a lovely john lewis assistant who kept bringing us things to try who found the shirt for us. We hadn't booked but she couldn't have been nicer. Something to try??

UnimaginableWindBird · 21/02/2026 11:16

One of DD's friends wrote a red velvet suit similar to this one too her prom, and looked fantastic.

My DD wore a black velvet jumpsuit, because at the time she couldn't think of anything worse than a dress.

Now, just a few years later she's taken a complete volte face, is studying Fashion Marketing, and really regrets not wearing a dress!

Kids! 🤔

I am in the same boat with my DD. She has long hair which she will wear in a half-up do. She won't wear makeup and hasn't worn a dress since she was about 7. She is open to wearing a jumpsuit but I think a suit might be a good option. I am loving the idea of a velvet or satin one but not sure if the velvet would be too warm. In my mind I'm thinking velvet suit with something vest-like but sparkly underneath as she won't want any cleavage on show and she can take the jacket off if she gets too warm. I have googled myself stupid but can't find this combination anywhere.
