Where should a 70 year old bride get a dress from?

My DM is getting married in a few months and is struggling to find a dress.

She was married young the first time around (in the 70s), and had a cheap dress, this time she’d like something classy, money isn’t an object if it’s the right one.

However she’s 70, short and round 🤣, so struggling to find the right thing. 5’3” and probably a size 16 to be more specific. She’s also open to trousers possibly. No real preference re colours or patterns. Any suggestions?

A bra is a good plan! I know she prefers comfy non wired ones but they may not do the dress any favours.

Definitely a properly fitted wired bra will make a difference.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/03/2026 07:44

Thst kaytya wilfman dress is divine! Her dresses are very well designed for women's bodies. But a proper bra is a great idea. A trip to bravissimo maybe?

BIossomtoes · 11/03/2026 13:51

Bravissimo is a good shout. I got a great fitting in JL as well.

Any update @WonkyConk ?

The Katya Wildman dress arrived and she loved it. Mum was very excited because she couldn’t get the order done online for some reason so she phoned up, and Katya herself answered the phone and took the order. However, again it wouldn’t do up across her boobs so she phoned ‘her friend Katya’ as mum now calls her 😂, who said she could exchange it for the next size up, so she’s sent that one back but I don’t think the bigger one has arrived yet. But I think it’s the one, hopefully 🤞

Ah that’s lovely @WonkyConk
Hopefully it will fit like a dream.

This is so nice.

She just phoned me to make me laugh - not dress related but she’s decided to get a MUA to do her makeup for the big day, and she came over to do the practice run today. Mum was happy enough with the result, the lady left and then mum remembered she had to pay for the wedding cake through her banking app. She tried to log on but the biometric face recognition wouldn’t recognise her and now she’s completely locked out of her banking 😂😂

That's classic!

This thread has really cheered me up-whatever your mum wears ( and you), i get the impression that you will all have a fantastic day.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/04/2026 12:37

Any updates on this? Did the next size fit?

WonkyConk · 08/04/2026 17:24

Yes! Well a little bit tight but she’s been crash dieting for the last 2 weeks so it should be ok. I saw it when I went over the other day and it’s a gorgeous dress, the fabric feels amazing, I think she’ll look great. Haven’t seen the shoes yet but she found some she was happy with but they didn’t fit so she had to order the next size up. Big day is this weekend!

What do old people clothes look like?
Tweed skirts, polyester trousers elastic waist, and beige jackets?

Is she not a bit young for that?

Its still worth booking an hour with a personal shopper see if they can find something to suit her shape - regardless of her age!

EVERYONE’S too young for that!

Don’t knock elastic waists!

Hahaha 😆
Old people in clothes in my head is the stuff of my Granny's generation she was 90 when she died 10 years ago.

So yes Everyone is probably too young for that!!
No wonder the Edinburgh Woolen Mill went out of business, their customers literally died off.

WonkyConk · 14/04/2026 00:45

It’s all done and dusted and the hangover has subsided 😂. My mum looked AMAZING - the dress was perfect and the hairdresser and make up artist did a lovely job. She was absolutely glowing and I could tell she felt confident and thrilled with the end result. She said…quite a few times throughout the day…that she scrubs up ok, and she really does. It was lovely to see her so happy.

Here’s a photo (face redacted!) of the happy bride! The day went perfectly and now they’re off honeymooning.

Thanks a million to all of you who got involved with this thread and suggested ideas, you’re all brilliant.

Well, she looks absolutely beautiful. I wish your mum and her new husband long and happy years, with lots of opportunities for her to wear her fabulous dress.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/04/2026 04:49

She looks amazing and I think the grooms kilt is the same tartan as my DHs. I'm glad you all had a fab day.

Triskellion75 · 14/04/2026 07:01

She looks fabulous, congratulations to the happy couple!

BIossomtoes · 14/04/2026 08:15

Beautiful. Thank you for the update @WonkyConk.
