What do people wear in their hair / on their head for weddings?

I have a massive head and hats never fit me. I have read that fascinators are old hat and unfashionable.

But it doesn't seem wedding-y to wear nothing. Any pointers?

Oh I do love a fascinator. A lot don't.

I like to get my hair pinned up for weddings, always makes me feel more dressy.

TheGoddessAthena · 10/02/2026 21:11

I love a fascinator too. And most people ditch them after the photos anyway - at least at the last weddings I've been to.

I love a fascinator! I’m early 30s and wear them to weddings all the time 😂 I’ve also had dried flowers and cute pearl hair clips in when I’ve had my hair done in an up do.

AxolotlEars · 10/02/2026 21:17

A fancy head/hair band ?

Furlane · 10/02/2026 21:24

Depends on the outfit. A striking outfit can look dull over-accessorised.

MrsFionaCharming · 10/02/2026 21:26

I like a big hat.

I know people think it’s outdated, but I think headwear is what makes wedding outfits special.

gototogo · 10/02/2026 21:29

Many people don’t wear hats or anything else, your choice

ImPamDoove · 10/02/2026 21:33

If you want to look utterly naff and frumpy, wear a fascinator.

The trend is for no hats and certainly not the F word. No-one has ever looked good in a fascinator. If you go to a stylish wedding, you’ll notice hats are mostly absent, apart from maybe on an old lady or 2.

A clip or a hairband is so much better, if you want something on your head.

TheGoddessAthena · 10/02/2026 21:46

I wish we could ban the word “frumpy”. And what’s a “fashionable wedding”? People go to weddings of friends and relatives, whether the other people going are fashionable or not doesn’t come into it…

I do like a hat but my head really is freakishly huge.

OP posts:
ImPamDoove · 10/02/2026 21:53

You said in your OP that you’ve heard fascinators are ‘unfashionable’, that’s what ‘frumpy’ means.

Or, in full, ‘dowdy and old-fashioned (typically used of a woman or her clothes)’.

I can’t think of a better descriptor than ‘frumpy’. And I think most women want to look at least moderately stylish at weddings.

TheGoddessAthena · 10/02/2026 22:51

frumpy is only every applied to older women though.

Utter bollocks.

I don’t like fascinators but they can look nice on others.

I also look shit in headbands. The last couple of weddings I went to, I’ve worn my hair curled, half up with a goldy clip/slide. It looks nice but not too fussy.

I agree completely!

im off to a ‘dress to impress’ wedding in March and intend to wear a plain, full length navy dress with a large fucia coloured hat, with matching shoes and wrap to make it a little bit special

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2026 11:13

I’ve been to two weddings of young couples recently and at both, almost every woman was wearing a hat or fascinator. I’d bought a cheap, small fascinator from a charity shop and was glad to have worn it because I would have certainly looked a bit naked compared to everyone else.

I would also love to ban the word ‘frumpy’ for being ageist and misogynistic.

My daughter has been to lots of weddings recently and she tends to wear a nice headband or clip. She says her age group (30) don’t tend to wear hats or fascinators, but this wasn’t true at the wedding I attended last year.

So, I reckon you can wear or not wear but maybe check in with a couple of other guests if you know any.

stollenisthebest · 11/02/2026 11:14

People typically don't wear hats these days, unless perhaps you're mother of the bride/groom. Some people wear fascinators or glittery clips or sometimes flowers, but most people will have nothing at all on their head. So do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Dull?! Surely it’s more likely to look busy or maybe gaudy? It’s unlikely to be dull.

TheGoddessAthena · 11/02/2026 11:33

I'm interested in how you know in advance that you are going to a "fashionable wedding".

I am going to the wedding of a close friend's daughter later this year. I have known friend and daughter for about 20 years. I have met the fiance but don't know his parents. I obviously know where the wedding is.

Does a wedding have to be in a specific place to be "fashionable"? Do the parents of the bride/groom have to have certain jobs? Do they have to have a certain level of income? Does there have to be a ban of people over the age of say 50, or over a dress size of 16? Do people have to wear those "fashionable" sacks which are often recommended? SO many questions.

I think I'd rather go to a fun wedding than a fashionable one, tbh. A clip or some sort of beaded hairband might be the way to go if I decide against a fascinator. Or maybe, because i'm the "wrong" side of 50 and not achingly hip and trendy, I should just stay at home and not curse their special day with my utter frumpiness.

I wear the hideously named "hatinator" to weddings. It's basically a hat on a hairband so the size of your head shouldn't matter.

And there's no way you'd catch me bareheaded at a wedding!

Comefromaway · 01/03/2026 14:50

Nothing. The last time I wore anything on my head for a wedding I was 15 and the wedding was in Wales where everyone wore hats to church.

never worn one since.

Makemineacosmo · 01/03/2026 15:09

I was at a very stylish wedding just before Christmas and loads of women, particularly younger women, wore fascinators. I was surprised as people act on here as though they are always, without exception, horrific. I had a diamante clip in my hair but some of the headwear worn was really lovely.

I'm quite sure that someone will come along and say that a fascinator could never be stylish, but I absolutely disagree, based on that alone.

JennyChawleigh · 01/03/2026 15:24

At the last wedding I went to I wore a silk scarf tied round my head turban style - there are lots of websites and youtubes showing different ways to tie.

ArwenUndomniel · 01/03/2026 17:03

I personally don't like fascinators, but that's because I find them fussy, and the older I get, the less fussiness I feel like I can pull off. That doesn't mean sticking to plain, neutral colours and never having any accessories, but I will choose graphic or abstract prints over florals, scalloped hems over lace trims or frills, jewel tones over pastels etc - you get the idea. For a wedding I would probably just have an updo with maybe a jewelled clip, but I do have curly hair, so it's already quite a lot by itself! A fascinator would tend to make everything too busy and detract from what I'm wearing.
