Fine hair advice

MrsPeacockDidIt · 06/02/2026 16:35

I have shoulder length, very fine hair, which gets very greasy at the roots. If I don’t put any product in my hair after washing then it dries really smooth but no volume and gets greasy very quickly. But if I put product in to add volume (and I’ve tried so so many different ones) my hair dries almost sticky and fly away and still doesn’t look nice.

what is the magic combo ? Or do I just have to learn to love what I have.

My ds has very fine and greasy hair and wears it long. I looked for advice and saw to wash it twice with shampoo each time, with a really thorough working through at the roots. And then not to put conditioner on the scalp but more from the middle of your hair down. It seems to have helped him.

Thank you. I do this already and yes does help.

Condition the ends first, then shampoo afterwards.

brittanyfairies · 06/02/2026 16:53

I have very fine shoulder length hair which in the past has driven me to despair. I do the above wash twice, only condition ends etc. But the game changer for me was in December when I bought the Shark Flex hairdryer. Now it dries smoothly with loads of volume. I managed to get 3 days between washes because even when the roots started to get greasy there was still enough volume in the body to create a reasonable pony tail.

Tigi bedhead small talk in the round purple bottle

EdinaTheConfessor · 06/02/2026 16:56

But honestly, the best thing I did for my fine hair is having it cut into a short bob

noexcuses26 · 06/02/2026 16:57

Dry shampoo is your friend here

Ditto. It’s often on offer at Amazon. I have tried them all from Kerataste to Redken to Aveda and Bed Head range is very good. They also do shampoo and conditioner for fine hair.

doglover90 · 06/02/2026 16:58

I use living proof full shampoo and conditioner, and I'm quite strict about only shampooing the roots and putting a small amount of conditioner at the ends. I also use the ouai fine hair mask once per week. Those things have made a massive difference!

PropertyD · 06/02/2026 16:59

Bed Head Gimme Grip shampoo and conditioner.

redboxerclub · 06/02/2026 17:04

Revlone one step, beauty works 10 in one spray and carb cocktail from colour wow.

I have tried it all!
best shampoo was Kristen Ess the one but I can’t get it. I lole
Loral growth boost anti fall in the brim bottle when it’s on offer.

TIGI bead head smell is awful!

MrsPeacockDidIt · 06/02/2026 17:44

Thanks everyone.

I already use the living proof shampoo and conditioner and their dry shampoo which is amazing. I’ve been using their volume products too but they make my hair almost frizzy.

i invested in a Dyson hair wrap which has helped a lot.

I’ll give the bed head stuff a try. What’s one more product in the grand scheme of things 😂

I've got the same hair type. I've been using cornish seaweed shampoo for a few reasons. That it's natural and local but also it seems to stop hair fall and give a natural thickness or grip. Hard to explain but none of the slippy silkiness you get with most shampoo. It does not froth up as much but I would recommend as a realistic alternative for fine hair

canuckup · 06/02/2026 17:58

Feel your pain, you have the same hair as me.

I find it helps to have a blunt cut, no layers.

Shampoo for volume is great, does not need need to be expensive stuff. Johnson's baby shampoo is also great, especially the lavender one.

I have done the whole leaving it for three days to reset it - this doesn't work. I just have to wash it every 36 hours basically. It's looks wet with the grease after that time.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 06/02/2026 18:07

Dry shampoo as soon as you’ve dried it after washing. Sounds mad, but has really helped me.

Rosemary oil a couple of times a week (massage into the scalp and leave on for an hour or overnight, then use a scalp massager when you wash) seems to have helped with density, and I love colour wow carb infused serum before blow drying.

MrsPeacockDidIt · 06/02/2026 19:43

Some more things to try, thanks all.

if only it were the 80’s still and I could just have a perm and be done with it 😆

@MrsPeacockDidIt May I ask, in what way has a Dyson hair wrap helped greasy hair??? I can’t work that out

If I use volume product and use a normal hairdryer it makes my hair go very course but much less so with the dyson. It’s not the greasiness it helps with but the fineness / fly away texture.

I read fairly recently from a 'top' hairdresser that we are using dry shampoo wrong, and that as you say we should use it immediately rather than next day, and it does make sense! I've done this when I know I am going to get warm (ie going out to a pub etc).

Also @MrsPeacockDidIt I've been using minoxidil because my hair is so fine, and I do find I can go extra days between shampoos as it seems to dry out the hair nearest the scalp..perhaps not the answer you were looking for but I do wake up with quite big hair given how little I have 😂

workingcocker · 06/02/2026 21:54

Only use clear shampoo

How I would love to wake up with big hair, it’s the dream but I’d be happy with smooth big hair for just a few hours in the evening 😃

Rydes · 07/02/2026 07:56

Morning @TitsInAbsentia can I ask how you are getting on with minoxidil? I’m thinking of starting to help with meno hair shedding. Don’t know anyone in real life who uses it. Thank you.

DivorcedButHappyNow · 07/02/2026 08:02

I have always had fine hair that was fly away and tangled easily so used conditioner.

On honeymoon last year a woman in Sephora changed my life. She got me to try Sisley products.

I now use the shampoo for coloured hair and no conditioner. It’s had an amazing effect on my fair. I occasionally use a mask.

I spend less too as was using so many lotions and potions before.

Annna41 · 07/02/2026 10:04

This was my hair too. I invested in 1/3-1/2 head of extensions to give volume - life changing. I also have been using the recommended tigi for years - its fab. I now look after my scalp and hair with a weekly hair oil soak before washing (not where I have extensions), sounds weird for oily hair but I double shampoo after and use minimal conditioner on the ends only. I have far less
