Footwear with office clothes

For work I usually dress un black smart trousers, blouses/shirts and wear black high heel boots. I have since been told that no one wears these kind of black boots anymore and everyone is in flats or trainers.

Am I behind the times wearing these black smart heeled boots?

What is everyone wearing?
I mainly work with men in the office and an old lady that wears cardigans. I can go in jeans if I wish.

Personally I think trainers with smart clothes look mismatched but that just my opinion.

I agree. Although, heels are out for me.

I agree. And I also think they make wearers look as if they're still stuck in lock down and the immediate post lock down period and have forgotten how to dress. Things have moved on.

I have definitely noticed a trend away from trainers and to a slightly smarter office wear in the last few months. Loafers are very popular but also ankle boots, often with interesting shapes/black heels. They seem popular based on social media too. What is still firmly out of fashion, as far as I can see, is anything too high or with a stiletto heel which does look a bit dated I think.

Anymore opinions please. I have been wearing this style for the last 15 years. Im lost as what to wear tomorrow.

Honestly, I don’t have any significant opinion on your boots - they seem unremarkable.

Why does it make a difference what you wear today, in particular? Who was the person who commented on them - and do they influence whether you get paid or not?

I think the main thing - since this is a Style and Beauty board and you’re presumably interested in those things - is that constant evolution is energising. There’s absolutely nothing to stop you wearing different styles of footwear to work if you want to. There’s no shortage of options.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 02/02/2026 08:39

Where what you like and tell people that when you want their opinion you’ll ask for it.

Perfidia · 02/02/2026 08:48

Is it only opinions you feel in need of, @Jessica60, or an actual list of places where one can buy footwear?

If the latter, could you give an idea of your budget? (To avoid the situation where suggestions range from £50 to £500.)

The only thing I’d add is that unless you are required to go to court regularly, you might consider a change from black trousers. Take a look at some mainstream shop sites and observe the sort of clothes they offer that are suitable for work. That might make it easier to imagine yourself in different footwear.

In my office one woman normally wears loafers, one biker boots, one Birkenstock clogs, one white trainers, one black trainers, one sports trainers, one those black comfy Clarks shoes with a button on that lots of healthcare staff wear. Not a heel in sight.

I'm sorry @Jessica60 i think your work boots are functional but dated

I'm mid 50s & i wear a range of footwear. I pretty much only wear trousers to work as i like to wear dresses / skirts outside work.

I wear various shapes / styles of trousers & footwear includes suede chelsea boots, laced Grenson brogue boots, Sturlini green loafers, chunky soled black laced derby shoes, flat black fringed laced ankle boots, burgundy leather loafers

Outside of work i wear metallic hoff trainers, long leather western boots, snakeskin ankle boots, the burgundy loafers & the black lace up derbies

I have some heeled ankle boots that i wear with dresses, they're slightly 70s style

Functional and unremarkable.

I wouldn't have bought them as I don't like those heel shapes, regardless of whether they are in or out of fashion. For me, boots either need to be flat, so that they are functioning properly as bad/cold weather footwear or obviously dressy, which would be a low kitten or low stilleto heel. But that's just my personal perspective.

If I saw you wearing them theyvfall into the "I wouldn't register" category but I can't think why they aren't acceptable workwear. Who said this?

WonderingWanda · 02/02/2026 17:40

Not allowed trainers at my school so tend to wear Docs or loafers. Sandals in the summer.

Not a fan either - i hate those in between heels. It sort of says you want to wear heels and be comfortable too. That may be true but i think you could find something that stands out a bit more. I would get higher ones but then my feet are used to it.
