Footwear with office clothes

For work I usually dress un black smart trousers, blouses/shirts and wear black high heel boots. I have since been told that no one wears these kind of black boots anymore and everyone is in flats or trainers.

Am I behind the times wearing these black smart heeled boots?

What is everyone wearing?
I mainly work with men in the office and an old lady that wears cardigans. I can go in jeans if I wish.

In my neck of the woods it’s black ankle boots with trousers and knee high boots with skirts. Low heeled.

Or loafers. Ballet flats in summer.

Nobody wears heels, it’s a very dated look.

trustedadult · 01/02/2026 10:41

I have some heeled boots. I wear to work and look incredibly glamorous

Hiptothisjive · 01/02/2026 10:42

I wear heels every day because I love them and get complemented regularly. We are smart causal but the women on our board don’t wear trainers so it’s perfectly fine not to. Wear what your like. There isn’t a right or wrong. Personally I think trainers with smart clothes look mismatched but that just my opinion. I think it’s nice to look smarter at work and I like feeling smarter so continue to wear your heel boots!

Some say they may be out of fashion but there are loads and loads of heels for sale so someone is wearing them! Not dated at all - ballet flats to me have had their day but heels are timeless.

TheCurious0range · 01/02/2026 10:45

No one wears heels at my work, but we work with high risk violent and sexual offenders and sometimes you have to move fast. Flat chunky boots, chunky Mary janes, DMs, loafers all popular

RaininSummer · 01/02/2026 10:45

Just wear you boots if you like them. Those Cos ones are vile I'm my eyes. I am a classic black wedge mum boot person as my plantar doesn't tolerate much else.

lol @ mum boot.

I'm hooting at those Shakespearean boots from cos

Me too. They might look good with a wetsuit, but in the office?? OP wear what you like and feel comfortable in. Some people wear heels, a lot wear trainers. I was at a seminar last week and a lot of people were wearing trainers and only a handful were in suits - the majority of attendees were women.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/02/2026 10:51

I’d probably wear trainers or my ballet pumps. Footwear styles change so much over the years but for me it’s now comfort over style. My days of court shoes and stilettos are long gone!

PhaedraWas · 01/02/2026 10:57

trustedadult · 01/02/2026 08:47

But this ridiculous idea that trainers aren't okay that pervades workspaces still is ridiculous

It depends on the workplace. In my office they are officially OK but for many people the novelty of being allowed to wear jeans and trainers to the office has worn off and there's a noticeable move towards smartening up. Not traditional pre Covid suits but not jeans and trainers either.

I wear flat ballet pumps or flat lace up boots or kitten heeled ankle boots.

Mumofyellows · 01/02/2026 10:59

Most people in my office wear trainers like Adidas Spezials or similar, or loafer type shoes with their work outfits.

Exactly, as a surfer the look and name led me to think they look like they should be paired with a wet suit. They sort of wannabe Mrs Peel in The Avengers on some level but aren't.

OP - can I just say it's not very nice to call someone an 'old lady'. I'm over 60 and if a colleague referred to anyone in the office like that they would risk HR getting involved. It's as bad as a man calling women girls.

Regarding office style. It's fairly casual where I work but in similar environments 20+ years ago it would have been more smart and the standard 'uniform' then was black trousers, heeled boots, smart top or shirt. One close colleague of mine wears heeled boots and black trousers with black top and blazer or longline cardigan. She looks lovely and it suits her, she's 50.

Our business links are in Italy and France. If I dress smartly for visitors I'm to be found in items I've picked up when travelling where they are from. So less black more navy and brown, tweedy blazer, low heel. Brown is on trend this year. If I'm not dressed for visitors I'm likely to wear straight or wideleg jeans or trousers with flattish boots or trainers. I'm very tall, used to work on the fringes of the fashion industry and find high heels impractically uncomfortable as well as making me taller than everyone else by a margin that's impractical.

only two posts in before someone suggests Cos. Some sort of record even for MN S&B threads!

i wear brogues, loafers, ankle boots, trainers, flat Mary Jane. Depending on mood / outfit / weather.

The poster suggested Cos because whether you like Cos or not, Cos is far more likely to show current styles than say M and S. Some of the Cos shoes and boots are outré, others aren't.

Someone has suggested Russell and Bromley - they've just gone bust.

LadyClumber · 01/02/2026 11:46

It depends on the work place. At my last firm,
women generally wore jeans/ cords with trainers or loafers unless they were meeting with clients. I have recently moved firms where the unofficial dress code is more formal. Not many stilettos, but most women are wearing kitten/ block heeled shoes or boots with smart trousers, dress or skirt.

Vintage bantz. No vibration.

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/02/2026 12:15

The majority of women in my office (central London/City) seem to wear trainers with loafers coming in a fairly distant second. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone wear boots and definitely not high heeled ones. Heels are rare and usually only if someone has a very important meeting and thinks we’re back in the 90s.

For client-facing meetings I usually swap my trainers for flats so Tod’s loafers, Flabelus velvet Mary-Janes or similar.

Screamingabdabz · 01/02/2026 12:17

I wore some old heeled Boden boots the other day and because they had very pointed toes and a chunky heel they didn’t look too bad but God, I felt so conscious of them. They just felt so pre-covid and outdated. And women walk so much more fluidly and confidently in flats and trainers.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 01/02/2026 12:37

I missed the ageism from the OP, mainly because I was distracted by the Cos link and comments that had attracted. OP your colleague likely has wisdom and experience you lack.

luckylavender · 01/02/2026 12:39

I wear Chelsea boots

Cyclingmummy1 · 01/02/2026 12:40

I wear heeled shoe-boots regularly under trousers but I do wonder if it's a dated look. I wouldn't wear them with a dress or skirt as I would have done 5 years ago.

I also have some loafers which I love - but I wear my trousers very long so need the heel.

Long boots with skirts/dresses. I'm gutted that R&B are going.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 01/02/2026 12:53

Perfidia · 01/02/2026 06:30

Interesting … But we can’t see your boots so it’s hard to say whether they look contemporary or not. (And whether your style guru was being kind, or simply rude.)

For standard ‘smart casual’ workwear I’d say Cos is a good barometer - and this is all the footwear they’re selling at the moment:

https://www.cos.com/en-gb/women/shoes?page=2

What d’you think? Might any of those shapes replace your habitual footwear? (If you want a replacement.)

Those boots look really uncomfortable because they are too flat.

Jessica60 · 01/02/2026 14:19

These are the two boots that regularly wear. Opinions please.

They look fine

TealReader · 01/02/2026 15:43

I wear loafers, brogues, ballet flats, Mary Jane’s or ankle boots under my trousers. I love the Cos shoes Perfidia posted. I also love Tabis though (and wear my Tabi Mary Janes often!) and they are generally described as hideous on here.

I love these and wear them all the time. But I'm not sure they go well with dresses.
