Anyone have experience of keratosis pilaris on the face?

I think I might have cracked my DD's acne that has been persistent since puberty 8 years ago.

It fits the images and description of keratosis pilaris. This is not something I had ever heard of.

Does anyone else have experience of this?

See this professional info with images (unlike the British Association of Dermatology) here

Anybody else? Any good treatments? Is it worth seeing a dermatologist?

Not on the face but a lot on my torso and have sessions since last year to have it removed with electrosis. The small ones disappear without a trace after scabbing, one large one left a white spot of baby skin that is gradually maturing. Absolutely worth doing, and I can recommend a fantastic practitioner in Shropshire.

That's interesting. I wonder if electrolysis works on the forehead area. Do the hairs have to show prominently before it can be done. I've seen laser recommended.

Not sure about hair, was never discussed as something relevant, but DH have had a wart removed on the face, and I had something a little mole reduced on forehead, all using electrosis. Different strength of microcurrent for different jobs.

CoastOfXmasPast · 02/02/2026 05:14

You have to make sure to research and check about scarring and aftercare. No scarring with electrosis, but no idea about laser.

snoopymug · 02/02/2026 11:29

Thanks. I'll do some research.

Is it worth going to the GP?

CeraVe do a specialist range for this, with salicylic acid, it’s great. I use the face wash every morning

Cream/moisturiser with salicylic acid should help after a week or two of twice daily use!

snoopymug · 04/02/2026 08:02

@CoastOfXmasPast Thank you.

She's using that cerave. Followed by glycolic acid. Followed by a recommended 10% urea cream. It's not done much at all. 😫

The cerave she's only been using for 3 weeks but the other products since December.

Is it KP or fungal acne they can look similar although fungal acne tends to itch.
If you think it’s fungal acne she should try Nizoral shampoo on her face
For KP I would use something like Paula’s choice or the ordinary 2% salicylic

justasking111 · 04/02/2026 08:24

Friends daughter had this on her face pregnancy started it. GP gave her antibiotics low dose. It cleared up

LittlePotteryBird · 04/02/2026 08:35

Antibiotics are for infections so wouldn’t work on kp, so doubtful PP’s friend ever had kp. Kp is a dry skin condition. It’s important not to use soaps or fragrances products, and to moisturise when skin is damp in order to trap moisture in. I use CeraVe SA cream and find it effective but I have to use it every day and my kp is still not 100% gone.

I think you should take your DD to a dermatologist for a diagnosis, as from your description it doesn’t sound like kp to me. I don’t know how kp could be mistaken for acne.

She's been through everything. All acne treatments (except roacutane) and also suspected fungal acne and tried the nizoral.

I think it most likely is KP and she just needs to find the right formula. I wonder if there are any aestheticians trained in this area . It seems like it doesn't warrant a dermatologist referral.

Hmm - I think because she has some hormonal teenage red spots also. And none of the GPs every said it was anything other than acne.

Do you know what antibiotic it was @justasking111?

whattheysay · 04/02/2026 12:38

without seeing a photo of her actual face it’s hard to say. Closed comodones can also look like KP, to treat you would use glycolic or salicylic for exfoliation, also duac can be good for this as well as retionoids.
I would look into a private dermatology appointment because nothing you’ve done has worked and you need more help.

My nutritionist recommended omega 3 oils and zinc for keratosis pilaris (which I have all over my arms, shoulders, bum, thighs and a bit on my jawline and cheeks).

VanillaSpiceCandle · 04/02/2026 16:37

I don’t but my very young child has KP on her face. Diagnosed by the GP. She’s pre-school so I don’t want to use anything too harsh but it’s all but cleared on her face using this cream from Boots a couple of times a week. Her arms are 90% better. It doesn’t hurt her at all and she’s pleased.

Did it work for you? There seems to be so little research.

@VanillaSpiceCandle Oh, thank you! I didn't know that existed. I will certainly check that out for her.

That looks nothing like kp. It looks sore though and must be rotten for the poor girl. I only had quite mild kp and it blighted my teens. It looks like lots of infected pustules?

LittlePotteryBird · 04/02/2026 20:58

Actually I’m pretty sure that photo is of folliculitis (I realise that’s not your DD). Have you looked into that OP? Apologise if you’ve already mentioned it and I missed it.
