What can I do to look better?

I’m 47 and in the last couple of years, these lines have appeared. They’re prominent even at rest and make me look grumpy and old! Any ideas for how to make them disappear?

Botox. I waited until I was 51 and wish I’d done it sooner. I was being accused of scowling at work when I was just concentrating.

No one guessed, they just say I look well. I told my sister and bf and they were genuinely supposed. DH has no idea at all.

Botox is effective and you can have as much or as little as you want. I would find a practitioner who is medically trained they are more likely to understand the intricacy of dose and balance.

I’m a dentist but I don’t carry out facial aesthetics but I do have a number of colleagues who do, so can have had Botox myself. When I had it done we discussed what I wanted to achieve and the dentist who carried out the procedure was brilliant. I didn’t want the frozen face look and even my DH didn’t notice I’d had anything done but the lines disappeared and my main goal was eyebrow lift which was brilliant.

Unfortunately, due to health problems I wasn’t able to continue but may have more in the future.

It’s a fine balancing act paralysing the right muscles and if the injections go too deep they freeze the deeper muscles that create expression. You need deep injection for the 11s but the brow lines and brow lift are more delicate. Having watched a few promotional clips for Botox online I can see why many women end up with the frozen face look.

With face freeze look the loss of expression can be just as off putting as the scowl. Friends who overdo Botox are difficult to read facially. They have that blank disinterested face.

Do your research. Ask friends for recommendations. Obviously if they have “stone face” then avoid their practitioner, but if you like their results then have a go. You can start off with just small adjustments then increase the dose the next time.

Unfortunately we only see the results in the mirror when our face is not moving, we don’t see our face in action. As a result many women are overdosed. We have a young staff member who is currently training to be a dental nurse. She is already trained as a beautician and does Botox. She has a permanent expression of mild disinterest which is really confusing when you are trying to build a working relationship. Her smile is affected by the Botox so she doesn’t look like she is genuinely smiling and she can’t raised her eyebrows. We were masks most of the time so communicate non verbally with eyes. You would be surprised how much we communicate with eye expression. When someone is unable to express themselves non-verbally it can be a real communication problem. My longterm nurse has fantastic eye and forehead expression, we can have a whole conversation without speaking.

If you have the budget then I would strongly recommend an LED face mask. I bought the CurrentBody one, along with their neck/chest mask and there's a noticable difference in just two weeks. I've been taking pictures so it's definitely real and not wishful thinking! My skin looks brighter and clearer, my neck/jawline is a little firmer, and the lines between my eyes (the elevenses) are less prominent. I take the pictures in a morning, after showering but before using any skincare so that there's no bias introduced from what skincare I'm using.

I'm honestly gobsmacked at the difference in such a short time. They say that you should see a difference at the 6-8 week mark so I really wasn't expecting much at this early stage. I do use it religiously five times per week. Oh and I'm 45 and I would say my skin is similar to yours, my forehead lines are maybe slightly less prominent but my elevenses are much more prominent (I frown when I'm thinking and had faint lines here before I was even 20).

Wow thank you for sharing this, I'd never heard of LED masks before but just did a quick online search.
Do you mind sharing which brand and type you've been using?
I hate the idea of botox but my lines are also heading in the typical 40's way and I'd like a nice alternative 😄

Moveoverdarlin · 19/01/2026 16:29

The only thing that will make the lines disappear is Botox. I started having it at 45 and wish I had started sooner. I’m amazed how it makes my lines vanish. I have a deep line on my forehead and it pretty much goes when I get Botox topped up.

CurrentBody. I have both the face mask, which also covers the under chin area, and the neck/chest mask.

Sorry I asked the same question, then saw your reply x

I’m a bit scared of Botox! I’m worried about looking fake, and also just because I have lots of allergies and reactions to meds etc, that I’m worried it could go wrong!

Botox doesn't make you look younger anyway. Obviously people who provide it are going to try to sell it to you as the only answer but that's nonsense. People who think botox makes you look younger are fooling themselves.

Then you obviously have a vested interested in telling people like the OP that botox is the answer.

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 19/01/2026 20:05

I also don’t think they are that bad, if I’m really honest and please take this kindly, I think your hair colouring is more ageing. People don’t stare at our faces as we do, they look at rhe over all person.

so get into good skincare, retinol, hyralonic acid, a good moisturiser, and use a good blurring foundation, tilbury airbrush flawless works for me and I’m several years older. And make sure youre fully hydrated.

so aim for two ideally three litres of water a day, cut alcohol down if you use it, eat a healthy diet, try to get your sleep in, get your skin care sorted, colour your hair if you’re worried about looking older, and use good makeup.

then I’m sorry to say it consider your clothes, good quality clothes that fit you, are in good condition, ironed, and with a nod to modern, these things all make us look fresher and more youthful

good luck

I agree. I feel Botox works in your late 30s and early 40s, but it’s a small window, past thst it is glaringly obvious and I personally don’t feel it looks good, I think once you hit late forties you need to stop and find other solutions.

people don’t say anything but I’d say other women always see it. Men tend not to notice bizzarely, but women do, and it gives a very unnatural look as we age, as sort of waxy tightness.

DeclineandFall · 19/01/2026 20:24

Face tape at night - like the frownies but cheaper. Will make the lines much better and stop them getting worse. Face exercises will help as well to strengthen the muscle underneath.

Those of you who’ve had forehead botox, have you had any issues with the brows dropping or a ‘heavy’ look around the eyes? I would love to try it on my forehead but I’ve got hooded eyes so would need something to lift my brows not relax them!
I’m worried that if it went wrong I’d be stuck like that for months!

Thecup · 19/01/2026 21:33

Botox or anti-wrinkle will not make you look frozen or waxy if it is administered correctly. It can also create wonderful improvement in your skin quality. This is well documented by many independent studies. Skin boosters like Profilo can be wonderful too. At some stage the only thing that will make a difference would be a face lift - however you are a long way away from that. Good skincare is also a must.

suki1964 · 19/01/2026 21:40

They dont look bad at all

Sometimes we are our harshest critiques , especially when faced with a magnifying mirror

I would look at my hair style and get a fringe and get more of an arch on the eyebrows to get a "lift"

vanillaskin · 20/01/2026 00:31

Tretinoin. I had 4 lots of Botox which obviously wears off
photos are before Botox in 2017, after my last Botox in 2017 and 2025 age 42 no botox but using Tretinoin for 5 years

I wouldn’t do it

i did once and eyebrows didn’t look right , haven’t put Botox on my forehead for couple of years now, just doing 11s

try yoga for forehead , micro needling (I do it at home) and perhaps retinol as advised by previous PP x

dinogreens · 20/01/2026 16:40

I am 48 and I use tretinoin, micro needling, a little Botox in my forehead, current body mask, Microcurrent treatments, copper peptides, NIOD skincare, P50 lotion, silk pillow case, TCA peels, SPF 50 every day. I take supplements for my skins benefit and eat a wholefood diet with at least 30 different plants a week. I prioritize sleep and hydration. I do regular exercise and strength training, meditation and yoga. I don't drink alcohol at all and haven't for 30 years. I've also been using tretinoin and SPF for over 25 years now.

I think it all helps to maintain my skin nicely.
