My lips are a mess. They are dry and flaky constantly. The skins so thin that I am in a cycle of flake heal flake.

what are your absolute lip balm or mask holy grails. I have tried laneige mask. I regularly use nivea lip balms, bliskek, Vaseline.

nothing is helping.

Just to add, thise ea8hr nighttime miracle pots are small but are often on sale somewhat, and I use it on my face morning and buggy in addition to lips, and the pots last months, I may go through 2 a year? Certainly not more than that.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 17/01/2026 08:50

I love the Carmex pot.

NiceUnusualDifferent · 17/01/2026 08:51

La roche posay cicaplast levres lip balm os excellent for daytime use, blistex lip cream if sore. Rehab sleep lip oil over night and twice a week the ordinary lip exfoliant under the sleep oil

Yellowsubmarine55 · 17/01/2026 09:13

Another vote for the original carmex. Super stuff, lather on overnight and lips are so much better in the morning.

I can’t use the elizabeth Arden 8hr lip balm. It makes me feel like my throat is closing - it’s not ACTUALLY closing but there’s a definite irritation from it. There’s something in a lot of lip balms/glosses that do this to me.

HollyIvy89 · 17/01/2026 12:22

Thanks all!! A lot to consider!
I went to chemist last night for advice on Cheilitis in corner of mouth which is on top of my problem of constant dry and flake cycle. She didn’t think fungal but said to try Zovirax high strength cold sore cream on spot - I do not think it’s a cold sore as I get them also frequently and defo not that. She said that and blistex which I have already. I am not convinced.

I will have a think about what to try that you have all suggested.

I do wonder now if my use of nivea lip balms is a potential issue. As could be my new use of the Nip and fab peptide oil! Or my espa face cream. Both are new. Also need to be careful with my tret. Maybe this is a problem?!

hydration wise I drink water all day long but maybe also hormones!

I just want to be able to wear a lip stick which currently I can not do.

Your second post has just reminded me, OP. DS2 used to have chapped lips all the time. Couldn't get rid of them. Then a nurse friend of mine told me it was contact dermatitis - a skin reaction to something. We discovered it was from a snack he often had in his school packed lunch. She said to use a small amount of mild hydrocortisone cream, which cleared it up in a couple of days, after months of soreness. Stopped buying those snacks and he never got it again.

It could be contact dermatitis for you too. Worth buying some hydrocortisone cream to see. Then cut out individual products you have been using until you find which one is the irritant.

The more I use lip salve the more my lips need it which gets you stuck in a vicious cycle.

LoudPlumDog · 17/01/2026 16:10

Rawleighs medicated ointment from New Zealand. It’s literally gold in a pot. Good for everything.

Picklechamp · 17/01/2026 17:26

I’m allergic to most lip balms and 8hr cream. O’keefes is my absolute saviour.

Lilylovetulips · 17/01/2026 19:52

Laneige lip mask and Lansinoh are my votes

I had roaccutane treatment for acne last year and my lips were an absolute mess- peeling, sore, dry, bleeding jn the corners. Laneige and Lansinoh were the only things that worked.

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 17/01/2026 20:02

I like the Nivea overnight care lavender one, I use it all the time though.

there used to be a gorgeous mooncare overnight treatment by Johnson’s that I adored but they stopped making that years ago. Nothing worked like that - it actually absorbed like a moisturiser rather than sat on top.

I hate those carmex ones etc.

So sad 😢

Clinique moisture surge lip balm is ace, it’s fragrance free and does soothe. It’s on the pricy side for a lip balm, but does last a while and sometimes can be on offer.

HoratioBum · 17/01/2026 20:41

There are as many answers to this question as there are products on the market - there is no definitive answer - you have to work out what you need and take it from there.

Lips don’t have oil glands and so can’t moisturise themselves, so the trick is simply to lock in moisture as much as you can.

Something occlusive like Vaseline will create a barrier meaning water isn’t evaporating from your lips

Irritants like flavourings, colourings and perfumes are largely redundant.

Lanolin seems to work for a lot of people as it is quite similar to human skin oils.

I actually find that during the day, a plain lip oil works well ( for me) as it sticks on for longer, meaning I spend less time in the apply/lick/reapply cycle. At night I use Lanolips, Nuxe reve de Miel or just plain Vaseline, I’ve had good results with O’Keefes as well.

And if you can find it, the Blistex in the metal tube with the red lid. That stuff works wonders overnight- I layer Vaseline over it to hold the goodness in

Hydrocortisone helps, definitely. It clears up my cheilitis with one or two applications, although on the face it needs to be used very sparingly.

Just the normal cream? Or is there a lip balm version?

I have the tub of kind of orangey stuff for night time use, and also a day version which I got for Christmas.

didn’t realise there was day and night versions so wondering if there is also a lip version

Not sure I’ve seen it on a tub but yes it is orange and sticky.

Fun fact (or possible myth): it was invented to moisturise horses hooves!

Sparkletastic · 18/01/2026 09:12

Another vote for Reve de Miel in the pot. The other thing that I adhere to is only applying it at night. In the daytime I wear lipstick.
