What do you wear to keep warm?

Being short and curvy, I don't like wearing bulky things. However, I'm always cold - am a very cold person!
Whether I wearing jeans and a top or a pretty dress, I am always cold!
I've thought about wearing a think l/s top or cami underneath but worry that I might get too hot. Invariably I end up spoiling a lovely look by wearing a great big cardi.
So - how do I keep warm and stay stylish?

As I said I'm short and quite busty - I don't feel as if a blazer is for me.

Try the cami/ls top and see if it does make you too hot. It might be the answer!

Merino wool has been a life changer for me. It doesn't itch like other wool and is way warmer than anything synthetic. Washes easily too.

I have tights and socks, long and short sleeved base layers, fine fitted cardigans and jumpers and a chunky merino wool jacket style cardigan.

PrimaniTu · 15/01/2026 16:36

Uniqlo Heat Tech vests/r shirts under clothing. Keeps you nice and toasty and avoids the bulk.

Uniqlo Heat Tech top

I have loads of them. They allow me to wear a merino jumper or a blouse without being cold.

I'm currently wearing a thermal, long sleeved top, a thick cardigan over the top, a scarf, and knee length thick socks under my barrel leg jeans. I'm still a bit chilly.

Layer are your friends. Try them.

lindyloo57 · 15/01/2026 17:22

Today I had on, thermal leggings marks and spencer, with a pair of animal print flared legging , top half thick thermal polo top again marks and spencer, with a cashmere jumper over, nice and warm.

Caspianberg · 15/01/2026 17:25

Wool

Merino wool or cashmere if possible.
Caledonia do excellent cashmere blend warm tights. Add the thick socks and warm boots.

I buy most decent woolen jumpers at t kmaxx.

Thermal thin long sleeve top always or thermal legging under jeans

unsync · 15/01/2026 17:32

I wear silk thermals (vest and leggings) from Landsend with cashmere sweaters from nearlynewcashmere.co.uk.

Nannyfannybanny · 15/01/2026 17:32

I can't wear any animal yarn..I bought myself 3 pairs of thermal fur lined leggings from Sainsbury's of all places. 4 thermal vests, black and white, long and short sleeve. They pop under a jumper. Thick socks, Nordic style boot slippers indoors. We have dogs so you need warm clothes. This morning I had coffee with a friend in a seaside hotel we got to, I added Nordic patterned jumper, cream, black, white. Normally I would change after the early morning shopping, but she only ever wears jeans.

It might be my age but I'm breaking out in a sweat just reading some of the recent descriptions of the layers of clothes people are wearing. I'd be absolutely mawked and unable to function. I also always ran cold before my coeliac diagnosis but since being treated I'm a lot warmer too.

I went to the Himalayas in February on a tour of the Buddhist temples and the recommendation there to my astonishment was that three top quality layers under a jacket were all that were needed. More layers compresses everything so trapped air decreases. Or something!

Buy top quality stuff in natural fabrics or some high spec outdoor type wear. If you are always cold it's best to have blood tests run.

I do love how people describe the patterns on their clothing - I don't think that makes any difference to thermal insulation! Grin

Oh and never forget to tuck your vest / bottom layer into your knickers.

Uniqlo heat tech tops! They are amazing. I’ve got thick long sleeved t-shirt ones and this year I’ve invested in their cashmere ones. They are very sheer so have to be worn underneath a layer but they are so thin yet so warm.
M & S do great thermal tights too! I can easily wear them under jeans & trousers too.
wearing a little scarf around your neck helps keep you warm too. The little stretchy jersey tube ones are good.

Britpopbaby · 15/01/2026 20:24

Uniqlo Heat Tech thermal featuring cashmere or M&S thin thermal. When needed the Uniqlo thick Heat Tech thermal tops. The thin ones work under looser dresses.

Britpopbaby · 15/01/2026 20:26

Primark thermal socks are £3:50 for two and are a great find!

What’s Uniqlo sizing like please? I’ve looked at their sizing chart but found it hard to figure out without getting a tape measure out. Im
a 10 in most places.

I'm a 10 and get S in the heattech tops. They are close fitting.

I find the cashmere ones as they are thin pretty stretchy.

mungo55 · 16/01/2026 06:37

I’m size 10 and Uniqlo small fits perfectly

ButWhysTheRumGone · 16/01/2026 07:07

Thank you!

shuffleofftobuffalo · 16/01/2026 07:28

Thin layers - so long socks under jeans, Uniqlo Heattech under top layers, thin layer over top. I am also permanently freezing cold, I find Uniqlo do lots of thin layers made of good fabrics that do actually make a difference.

biggest thing tho is to make sure you’re layered up as soon as you get dressed - don’t let yourself get cold in the first place, remove layers through the day rather than putting them on through the day.

678socks · 16/01/2026 07:34

How do you manage with the dreaded armpits?? Possibly pre menopause and they are certainly more stinky…! However I am a cold person so need to wear lots of layers!

evtheria · 16/01/2026 07:39

I do an activity that involves a few hours of stood about in the cold without much movement and I wear:

A thermal layer first (long sleeve top, thermal leggings/tights), merino is preferred but I also rate M&S thermals and Uniqlo
If extra cold I’ll put fleece-lined leggings over, from Primark or B&M (this is rare, I find it too warm)
A long-sleeve turtleneck t-shirt or flannel shirt
A wool jumper - high neck preferably, if not then a small scarf closely wrapped - you could swap for your cardigan
Trousers: slightly loose fit corduroy or wool-blend
Thin bamboo socks under thick thermal socks
Winter shoes (you can get trainers or boots), as regular trainers are usually airy and freezing

A warm beanie hat makes a difference, though I really hate how it feels on my hair

Tank tops and looser fitting tops. I can layer cardigans over them.

I’d like to echo the love for the Uniqlo heat tech range. I recently bought one of the tops with cashmere and it’s a pleasure to wear. I wore it in Poland in December. Warm as toast.

I forgot about scarves. In the 1950s I used to laugh at my late DM wearing scarves indoors, sometimes around her neck, sometimes late queen Elizabeth style on her head, there was only heating in the sitting room.. open fire. I've got lots of different ones, some great big ones I can wrap around my neck and shoulders. Over the coat outside and quickly removed if you get too hot.
