What do you wear in Zoom meetings?

I normally just have a hoodie. Want to change it to be a bit more professional look, but not too much. Need something warm too and not turning the heat too high when I am alone at home. What do you recommend?

It all depends entirely on your role at work and what the Zoom meeting is for.

Something reasonably business like- a nice blouse or a smart top?

mynameiscalypso · 13/01/2026 17:30

I generally wear a a jumper over a thermal top. If I want to look smarter, I got some fake shirt collars that you wear underneath a jumper from Amazon so I don’t have to lose the thermal but it also looks like I’ve made a bit of an effort.

museumum · 13/01/2026 17:33

I wouldn't wear a hoodie. I wear knitwear, smarter is vneck with a blouse/shirt underneath, or less smart is a higher neck jumper. I wouldn't wear a hoodie tbh I think hoodies (much as I love them) are super casual - almost like wearing joggers to the office.

Sesquipedahlia · 13/01/2026 18:37

At this time of year it would be one of several Shetland or plain lambswool jumpers or jumper dresses, with my usual jewellery. (Earrings, bracelet, rings.) Any visible clothes would be ironed. But I’d be more exercised over eyebrow grooming and glowy skin.

(Not that I have many Zoom meetings any more. Thank heavens.)

CaffeinatedSeagull · 13/01/2026 18:51

Depends on the type of job, your level and also who you are in a meeting with (Colleagues or Clients?). If it’s the latter than more effort and thought goes in so should dress a little bit smarter.

Meetings with my team are a lot less formal, and relaxed. Maybe a nice knitted woollen jumper?

PashaMinaMio · 13/01/2026 18:56

Decent knitwear and a bit of bling. Polo neck? Pretty scarf?
Lipstick and blusher helps.

Not a hoody of any description. Up your game.

youegg · 13/01/2026 19:01

I would never wear a hoody for a Teams meeting whether internal or with clients. I dress in a way that appears smart on the call and not like I’ve just hauled myself off the sofa. Usually it’s just a black top and natty scarf. Hair done. Make up on.

PineappleB · 13/01/2026 19:03

Agree no more hoodie.
knitwear sounds nice. Didn’t think about wearing jewellery at honeymoon. May be I should try.
it’s professional job, financial services, but not client facing.

I always wear the same sort of clothing as I would for a face to face meeting.

Namechangerage · 13/01/2026 19:09

Yes, not to hammer the point home but I would never wear a hoodie on a call, and my work is quite casual ie jeans in the office etc. a hoodie on a work call just strikes me as someone who is not engaged tbh.

I wear a lot of round neck jumpers in colours I like, red is quite nice as a pop of colour but whatever suits you. I usually wear earrings. In warmer weather, shirts or smart t-shirts.

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/01/2026 19:11

I’m also in FS and definitely wouldn’t wear a hoodie. Occasionally a fine knit jumper but I tend to wear a dress or a shirt. I have occasionally been known to join calls in my gym kit (plain black vest top) by throwing a jacket over the top and putting some earrings in and been told how smart I look. 😂 I’ve also joined calls in my PJs 😊but the PJ top is a very nice linen shirt (from Piglet) so looks like ‘day wear’ if you can only see my top half.

My tip is always add a pair of earrings (big enough to be seen on camera) and some coloured lip oil / balm in a shade a little darker/stronger than your natural lip colour. If your hair’s a mess, put it up. I can literally roll out of bed and be camera ready in less than 1 min.

Omeom · 13/01/2026 19:14

I would copy what others at your company are wearing, I’m always in a hoodie, but so is everyone else.
but maybe a wool type sweater, same warm vibe but looks smarter

NutButterOnToast · 13/01/2026 19:17

I don't wear hoodies when I'm wfh on teams calls. I don't think it looks professional, and I feel awkward.

I wear proper knitwear in this weather and always do my hair and put makeup on. I think that helps the most.

Sesquipedahlia · 13/01/2026 19:33

My winter Zoom knitwear is usually from one of La Fetiche, Margaret Howell or Studio Nicholson, but the nice thing is that fabric quality doesn’t really translate across a Zoom screen, so I’ve sometimes trialled an impulse buy from Zara in a Zoom meeting.

So if you want something more exciting than, say, Community Clothings excellent knitwear, Zara’s new collection has some cute things:

I have two or three nice tops that I use specifically for wfh. Mainly nice knitwear for this wear and some plain t shirts for summer.

Vitriolinsanity · 13/01/2026 20:10

Shirt or round neck knit with a cardigan. Always make up as my camera makes me look very washed out. Always hair done.

Joggers on the bottom.

I do like a nice Zara co-ord

monkeymamma · 13/01/2026 22:31

I run hot so I tend to wear a nice airy blouse (smarter style) with softer trousers (not joggers but something fairly comfy - I’d swap out for proper trousers if going into the office). Then I keep a nice chunky cardi on hand. If more casual eg it’s Friday or especially cold then a fleece is fine, but nice funky patterned one. One thing I love to do is wear little ballerina flats - they are slippers but look more like shoes and make me feel more professional than fluffy slippers/socks or bare feet. I am not good at this next bit but my New Year’s resolution is to wear jewellery, makeup and nicely dried hair every day (or as close as I can manage!).

Passthecake30 · 13/01/2026 22:50

I wear hoodies. People respect me for my knowledge and experience and not what I’m wearing. If I’m meeting senior managers or directors I’ll wear something that looks smarter on screen.

Sesquipedahlia · 13/01/2026 22:59

😄

Sure, people respect me for my utter brilliance.

But those of my peers who know me also know how I dress, in person and on screen. If I appeared on a zoom screen in a scruffy hoodie people would wonder what was wrong. But might not ask …

QuietlyWonderful · 13/01/2026 23:46

A nice top / sweater - nothing low cut. Smart trousers, just in case I have to stand up, e.g. to get a file / answer the door - but my trousers are M&S elastic waist so very comfortable..

Nail varnish - even if it's so pale a pink it's invisible (and when it starts to wear off, it's less obvious). I always notice people's hands - bitten nails vs well groomed.

Moveoverdarlin · 13/01/2026 23:50

This time of year, I wear a polo neck or fine knit round neck jumper.

I literally change for Teams meetings. I’d wear a hoodie but if I have a call I put a smarter jumper on.

My DH does the same and has a shirt ready to go if he has an important call.

Director level Corporate Finance presenting to Board level globally. No one cares what I wear - they are paying for my expertise and not my wardrobe choices. Hoodies are fine.

Come on now. You can say that about anyone in any job whether WFH or in an office but turning up looking smart respects others and reflect on you and how you want to be respected back.
Im very senior in a law and not a single colleague, even juniors have pitched up to an online meeting internal or external in obviously casual clothes.
You could say the same about pitching up in jeans and a hoody to a wedding or an interview but it’s still not generally acceptable. Clothing and appearance still count for a lot despite the reductive arguments to the contrary.
