Trousers for over thermals

I am heading to Paris and Disneyland Paris with my DS for February half term. I think it maybe incredibly cold.

I have a good coat but not sure what to wear over themals (merino wool) on my legs. Jeans are generally my thing but I know they are quite cold. I have a pair of Akai trousers from Vinted but they are skinny fit so I can’t really fit anything underneath. Any other recommendations on trouser options for v cold weather?

Thermals under anything are fine IME, as the point is trapping air between layers. But you could try cords.

Coffeesmell · 10/01/2026 18:43

Where do you live in the UK?

Turnerskies · 10/01/2026 18:44

If you are wearing thermal leggings, jeans on top should be enough. Otherwise, what about cords? Styling is similar to jeans but they are warmer.

Coffeesmell · 10/01/2026 18:44

Because presuming Surrey…. Paris won’t be much colder!

hohahagogo · 10/01/2026 18:46

I wouldn’t worry yet, 2 weeks beforehand fairly reliable weather forecasts are available and you will be able to get a sense of whether you need thermals or more likely waterproof jacket and umbrella! I’ve been to Paris feb half term and was long sleeve t shirt weather, a light fleece in the evening, warm !

MadameBethune · 10/01/2026 18:51

You could look for fleece lined or padded winter walking trousers on Vinted, all the outdoor brands do them eg Mountain Warehouse, Craghoppers, Uniqlo etc. They are not much more bulky than normal trousers.

But I think merino thermals and jeans would be ok.

DallasMajor · 10/01/2026 18:53

I'm also a little confused why Paris would be significantly colder than Surrey.

LittleBitofBread · 10/01/2026 18:57

I have some wide-leg carpenter cords from Poetry that I wear with thermals underneath in cold weather. They’re very roomy, so I don’t feel stuffed into them.

SurreyisSunny · 10/01/2026 18:58

@DallasMajor @Coffeesmell yes Surrey! I’m just aware we’ll be outside most of the time which if it’s 1 degree in Surrey other than walking the dog I spend in central heating!!

I think if you dress up as though you’re in the arctic on day 1 in Paris, you won’t on day 2 when you realise completely not needed!

SurreyisSunny · 10/01/2026 19:05

@Coffeesmell hmm yes maybe im overthinking I just keep reading posts about Disney being incredibly cold. I’m ok in Paris itself as we can do some indoors stuff too. My DS can wear joggers but they aren’t really my style!!

Padded walking trousers. Go to a Go Outdoors or mountain warehouse and try them on .
No one can tell, they are padded and warm and windproof, but you can also have thermals underneath. Perfect for ambling outside

Those saying how incredibly cold it is probs my are coming from southern France or Spain
not the uk

oocooloo · 10/01/2026 19:15

It may be the type of trousers, but I find if I put thermal leggings on underneath, the trousers seem to cling to the under layer and are never warm or comfortable. Drives me mad. So I don't bother, I just wear warm socks and fleece lined jogging bottoms. Not one bit stylish but I don't give a damn. And it will not be freezing in DLP, cold maybe but not Arctic.

But then again maybe I just don't feel the cold as much as others do.

AlwaysAFaithful · 10/01/2026 20:01

It was absolutely freezing when we went a few years ago in February. We were chilled to the bone and when you’re queueing that is a bit rubbish. I wish I had worn tights under my trousers.

Have a great time!.

tipsyraven · 10/01/2026 20:04

I swear by these from Uniqlo, really warm but very light weight.

If you're from Greece then yes, you might feel cold, but Surrey?

They look fab, how do you find the sizing? Do they run big? I’m a slim size 12.

Yes others have said the same. I’d rather have layers we can take off than be too cold. A few years ago I went to Berlin for a city break and on day one I had to go to Uniqlo to buy more thermals!

I bought L and I’m a 14 so I think small or medium for you. they are pull on so have stretch in the waistband. Watch out for the length, if you aren’t tall then the shorter length will be better. I’m 5’7 and the regular is long on me. You won’t think they are warm when you see them but I’ve been wearing them
in this very cold weather. Very comfy to wear. I bought another pair.

Also roomy enough to put thermals on underneath if bitterly cold out.

mixingplaydoh · 10/01/2026 20:21

I’d wear them under barrel legged jeans. Then the air will trap between the layers, but your ankles won’t be flappy.

thedogdaysareover51 · 10/01/2026 20:35

I went to Eurodisney a few years ago in December and it’s the coldest I’ve ever been in my life! I was absolutely chilled to the bone- and I’m from Scotland. I think it’s something to do with the Gulf Stream. I could be talking rubbish, someone told me this 😂 And obviously because you are outside from 10am to 6pm which you wouldn’t normally be in the UK.
i have these leggings from Uniqlo and they are toasty warm.https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E480966-000/00

Yes I’ve seen other people say the same. That’s why I’ve bought us both merino thermals. I hate being cold too.

I didn’t pack well at all and wore my pyjamas under my jeans on day two 😂
