Warm, grippy, comfortable boots

I’m after some boots matching the description above that are a little more stylish than walking boots.

I know there will be lots of recommendations for dr martens but I have wide, weird feet and I’m too worried about them needing to be worn in but still being uncomfortable and it being an expensive waste!

Thank you in advance!

@FruitWordSalad @TMMC1 Thank you for the Mammal recommendation. Never heard of them before. They look amazing! How waterproof are they?

Never had an issue with them not being waterproof. I don’t think they are “gortex” but I wear them in all weathers happily and successively. And all day everyday year on year in winter. The only time I don’t is if I expect a really muddy walk

Happyandkoiful · 08/01/2026 20:03

I also have wide weird feet - well, wideish at the front but the real issue is that they are not tapered like most toeboxes are - my little toes are almost the same length as my big ones.

I am always searching for boots that fit. I have had some success with Moshulu Skerry Waxy chelsea boots, and Blundstones are nice and non-tapered. I just bought some heel lifts to put in my Blundstones as they are a little too flat for comfort.

I am eyeing up Birkenstock Brysons, which look wonderfully wide, but will need a little heel lift.

I'm off to investigate all the suggestions on this thread!

The fur lined DMs don't need to be worn in. I have these and they were comfy from day 1

They are also warm and grippy ☺️

@ResusciAnnie are the soles grippy on ice or mud though? I have an earlier version of the Sorel boots. They are so warm and comfy but no grip at all!

Yes I walked to work half an hour in the ice yesterday and no problems (icy pavements). I haven’t them noticed not being grippy. I wouldn’t expect them to be fully waterproof though eg for trudging through snow.

grenson Nanette boots

Letsgoforaskip · 08/01/2026 21:26

If anyone is after a budget option, I recommend the Aldi walking boots. I wore them for 2 walking holidays and a seriously snowy hill walk. They were comfy from day one, waterproof and not too heavy.

HollywoodTease · 08/01/2026 21:54

As a budget option you can't beat Softlites from Shoezone.

There are a few styles in both ankle and calf length, most are fur-lined and they are very grippy.

All for under £20 a pair! I have four different styles now, my oldest are 5 years old and still going strong. 🙂

No, I didn't! Wrong boots. These ones which you can wear with skirts as well as seen.

Not warm or trendy but I rely on my Hotter GTX sole trainer-shoes in winter. Very grippy and come in a wide fit.

i was looking at Sorels for my mum who is not sure on her feet in icy weather. I’ve heard good things.

Francestein · 09/01/2026 04:29

I can attest to finding Sorel boots super comfortable and I also find their waterproofing to be very reliable. Meanwhile, one of the reasons they fit me so well is because I have narrow feet. Perhaps read reviews on each style on Amazon before committing. They’re pretty expensive and their sizing can be erratic also.

Francestein · 09/01/2026 07:33

@RyanFudgingMurphy Just look at the grip underneath… the ones above are great. The rubber-soled boots are also fab. The sneaker-style soles (Out & About) aren’t that fabulous. Tbh, make sure they specifically say that they are for snow and ice as they also make waterproof autumn boots.

I recommend Skechers relaxed fit. I have an annoying problem with my toes feeling squashed together but wide fit are too wide. I find the relaxed fit works perfectly on me. They don’t have my exact pair now, but something like this - deals on at the moment. These are just in a tiny size, but gives you an idea.

I have some Sorely boots which are useless in ice but excellent in snow, maybe yours are more for snow?

RogueFemale · 09/01/2026 12:37

I got these, and they're perfect winter boots, incredibly warm, good support, good traction, also exactly true to size (when wearing a warm but not too thick sock). A bit stiff to put on initially, but much easier now I've worn them in. www.merrell.com/UK/en_GB/thermo-snow-grip-mid-waterproof/60656W.html

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/01/2026 16:28

Chunky soled Chelsea boots are great as they just slip on. I also have some brown ankle boots from Hotter a few years ago (yes I know!) which are slightly bikerish with straps, fit like slippers but are grippy on the sole. Closest I can find now is these.

I really l like these

I love the mammal boots linked up thread but not sure how suitable they'd be for wet UK winters. I found when i was looking a lot of things marketed as snow boots wouldn't really handle wet slushy snow very well.

Women's Greta II Waterproof Boot Black

I have these, they’re Cabotswood Wincanton 2 chestnut equestrian boots. They are a bit horsey, but they’re incredibly comfortable, waterproof, great grip and they look good with a dress.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. Lots I’d never heard of.

I like equestrian style boots but I feel so silly in them! They look fab on other people, I just feel like I’m playing fancy dress when I wear them
