What would you do with these (diamond) rings?

The first pic (single stone) is my engagment ring, which I haven't worn for about 12 years (still happily married!) and it seems silly to have it sitting around unworn. I think it's about 1 c., platinum. As I don't really wear a lot of jewellery I feel self-conscious wearing it now (it feels too ostentatious/ blingy) and it's not really my taste anymore (I've had it nearly 25 years)

The second is my grandmother's engagement ring, which I actually much prefer on my finger. However, while the diamonds are 'good' (according to my mum) the setting is/was white gold plate, which has long since worn off so it's now black/ tarnished. Again, it feels silly having it just sitting around unworn.

I was wondering about having the whole lot reset as an eternity ring version of this, or similar, using the diamonds and the platinum from my engagement ring? Although the stones are a mix of square and round... Or maybe replating my grandmother's ring and wearing that and then doing something different with my engagement ring (but I'm not sure what - I don't think I'd ever wear a diamond solitaire necklace for e.g.). I guess I could keep the stone from my engagement ring for my DD in the future (she's still a child)?

Any ideas? What would you do??

I’m a silversmith, but also I’ve had a ring reset. Mine was also one large, one medium and two small stones, but they were all round. I paid for one extra medium stone. I’ll attach a photo but it wouldn’t work for you as mine are all round but I kind of mean a similar design.

I do think you could reset similarly, using the square in the middle and your other stones at the sides, buying another medium one. It’s the setting which makes a difference. I would have a 4 prong setting on the round stones which gives more of an illusion of a square shape, making them blend.
mixing the shapes works with the right setting.

this is nice as an example but I’d go 5 stones not 3 https://www.angelicdiamonds.com/three-stone-princess-diamond-ring-platinum-tyby.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping-high-performance&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22770653185&gbraid=0AAAAADR10V4wBi5CeVOzawBn0xg9rUU-u&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgvPKBhCxARIsAOlK_Eq6-vu2a3-YTfpxTSpB3LoqXTsk-GSCBIkzEN1UCCPH4UVulRX5qcUaAiiDEALw_wcB

OK, @FlappicusSmith , two options...

Bit radical, but the two smaller diamonds can be made into discreet stud earrings. Any metal you choose, something you can wear every day I wear white gold rub-over set stud earrings all the time.

Which means you're left with a princess cut stone and a round/brilliant cut.

You need another round/brilliant cut of a similar carat/clarity and then have them set in a 3 stone ring with a lower set rub-over setting so there are no claws and it won't catch, using the platinum to match your wedding ring.

OR

Get the 3 stone ring totally reset into platinum to wear as your engagement ring.

Get your princess cut stone set much lower in a rub over setting in gold and wear it on your RH.

Thoughts?

I love your rings as they are but if you must, could you change yours to something like mine?

@JoshLymanSwagger I'm leaning towards your last options.

Get the 3-stone ring either just re-dipped (as I quite like it as it is) or reset in this sort of style to wear alongside my wedding band. Reset the princess stone something like this, wearing on my right hand. I'm not sure if that 2nd setting would work as well with a square stone. But I do like the setting a lot and the mixed metal means I think it would work well as a 'dress' ring, rather than screaming Engagement Ring

lovely rings and suggestion @Mykittensmittens but they aren't my style really... yours look fab on you though! I like the combo of the three.

Both are lovely rings. I think though a ring with a lower setting and different stone shape e.g pear or oval shape would suit your fingers much better.
An eternity ring with some stones/ design on the band & 1 of these stones would look lovely on your finger.

I love your beautiful solitaire engagement ring, looks great on your finger. I'd keep it, but maybe I'm blingy. I'd definitely have your grandmothers ring refurbished, Jewellery work can be quite expensive, so a whole new mingled setting may be quite pricey.

I would keep it too,it's beautifully understated and not blingy or showy at all.

What about a Toi et Moi ring with the 2 smaller diamonds on the shoulders?

I just looked them up and... no! They make my brain itch just looking at them! It would be an excellent solution to the problem though!

I don't think any of the current settings are doing those stones any favours & i think you should def get the 2 rings reset.

I love your last set of suggestions & think they'd look great!

What about a setting like that in the mixed metals

Ooh yes - I love that! That's basically the sqaure-stone version of the one I linked above and I think it would look great in mixed metal. I have my beloved grandfather's signet ring (he died when I was a teenager) that is very worn and battered, so I could have that melted down for the gold!

I love the idea of being able to do something with combinations of my ring and both of my grandparents'

I think that sounds ideal! And a wonderful way to enjoy all the sentimental jewellery left to you!

As a short-term measure I'd just get the rhodium plating re-done on your grandmother's ring. It will likely cost less than £50. You'll have to get it re-done periodically as it will wear quite quickly next to your platinum wedding band but that's not the end of the world.

There’s an amazingly talented lady who recreates stunning and bespoke jewellery who will be able to make something you will love. She took my mum’s engagement ring and created stunning rings for myself and my daughter. She’s on instagram leahlewingtonjewellery

ThisHazelPombear · 08/01/2026 18:59

Whatever you do your engagement ring needs remaking the work is not good. If it catches the prongs are loose.

LeChiffre26 · 08/01/2026 20:14

Are you near Pruden and Smith? If so go in and discuss with them. Another place I would recommend if you are in that area is Ring in the Lanes in Brighton. Very knowledgeable.

HopingForTheBest25 · 10/01/2026 08:43

There are different grades of white gold - it's about the mix of metals. So you could get your grans ring remade in a white gold that doesn't need replating. It won't be as shiny and bright as a replated ring but the colour is softer and works nicely with diamonds imo.
Personally, I'd also get the setting of the original engagement ring remade into something safer (it really shouldn't be loose) and that you love and wear it on its own on your right hand. Then I'd eventually pass it on to my daughter. If you do this, you will be giving her a beautiful ring that she associates with you, not something you just kept in a drawer.

I think you could get used to wearing a bit of bling if the settings were made into something you were comfortable with - they really are beautiful rings and it's a shame not to enjoy them.
