Automatic hair curlers - are they any good?

AppropriateAdult · 04/01/2026 18:42

My Instagram feed is full of these and the ads are clearly working as I’m sorely tempted… My hair is naturally straight but does hold a GHD curl well - it’s just a bit of a faff, and the quality and uniformity of each curl can be a bit hit and miss. The automatic curlers do seem to solve these problems - has anyone used one, and would they recommend?

(This is the sort of thing I’m talking about, for anyone still in the dark…)

I’m also interested to know. I don’t seem to be able to quite get the hang of this with my ghds.

somanychristmaslights · 04/01/2026 18:53

Yes I have a babyliss one. Works very well as I’m rubbish at curling my own hair.

MaarvaCarassi · 04/01/2026 19:26

Which one do you have @somanychristmaslights?

laesosalt · 04/01/2026 19:30

Would love to know this! I’m hopeless with my GHDs 😭

nocontactquery · 04/01/2026 19:34

Ooh @AppropriateAdult how funny you've posted! So I've recently bought the TYMO one (curlpro) thanks to instagram too and it is AMAZING! Honestly, a total game changer - it is literally so easy to curl your hair and I highly recommend. I have quite thin hair so I don't even wait for the 8 second beep - as soon as it has finished spinning, I just gently pull down. It takes me maybe 10-15 min max to curl my whole head! Def worth the money

It is very much proper curls like ringlets (so maybe if you want it to be looser it might start off looking too much but what I do is just leave it and put nothing on it (Like no hair spray or product) and then it drops to look a bit looser. I love it.

ALSO if you have split ends it completely hides them as it sucks up the hair from the top and then wraps it all around so the whole bit is curled (whereas for me with usual curling wands, if I try to grip the hair at the bottom, the split ends make it a bit difficult as you can't graps them properly if that makes sense). So it makes my hair look so good.

I don't know if it's allowed but I was sent a link to share when I purchased it so if you want to buy it through the link that would be amazing ha as I think I get a discount voucher or credit or something. (I don't have public instagram so it's all pretty useless usually!) It gives 20% off I think, so please PM me if you'd like it!

nocontactquery · 04/01/2026 19:37

Oh, or actually I think I can share a discount code for 20% off..

EMMA22453

Not sure if that can be used more than once though..

Makemydaypunk · 04/01/2026 19:41

I had one and it did work well but the curl it gave was old fashioned if that makes sense, a bit Shirley Temple, the GHD curl is a much more contemporary.

NowIKnowHowToMakeHummus · 04/01/2026 20:31

I bought the TYMO after weeks of targeted ads, I eventually gave in, it took a couple of weeks to arrive, but it is AMAZING! I honestly am so suprised, I was assuming it'd be rubbish but it really really is great. I am terrible at doing my hair, when I used a straightener to do it they were rubbish and dropped straight away. This does give a strong curl and it stays for 2 days. I'm honestly amazed.

TheProvincialLady · 04/01/2026 20:34

I have a Glamouriser (terrible name) and it works pretty well on my very fine but plentiful shoulder length hair. The curl stays in for a good amount of time too. Takes me probably 25 minutes compared to an hour using curlers.

FirstDayonthePlanet · 04/01/2026 21:53

Yes! I have a ‘no-name’ version from Amazon which I’ve had for about 18mths, and it’s so great.
I was hopeless at using tongs, it took me ages, my arms ached and it looked crap anyway. This I can honestly do in 15-20mins (I have thick hair so lots of sections) and it looks great, so happy.

im also being bombarded by the ads, the tymo version looks better because it’s got a longer barrel and a ‘guide’ to feed your hair in. Mine, that doesn’t have this and it took a few goes to get the hair in properly.

K10f1 · 05/01/2026 07:20

I'm rubbish at hair. Anything to do with it really. I'm crap at blow drying it, crap at curling it and can't do anything but put it in a ponytail. I have long thick hair and it always took forever to curl it, looked rubbish, and dropped in half an hour anyway. I used to straighten it just to smooth the frizz but always preferred a loose curl. I bought the TYMO curl pro after probably a year of social media adds. It's brilliant. Easy, quick. Game changer for me. I brush the curls out after doing which gives a sort of curly blow dry look. I'm 40 years old and can finally do my hair myself. Would recommend. Indeed have recommended it to basically all my friends.

Danikm151 · 05/01/2026 07:26

I’ve had a babyliss curl secret for years and it does a good job. I have the pro one so the curls can go in different directions.

Whentostarthrt · 05/01/2026 07:30

Am also rubbish at hair. I’ve tried everything from Dyson air wrap, shark flexstyle, asked my hairdresser to show me how to curl with straighteners… still useless. Got persuaded to get the Tymo one after a million fb adverts and omg it is brilliant. I can curl my hair and it actually looks good! I have even bought the pro version for my daughter who has long hair (the other one is better for shoulder length or above) and the straightener/comb thing. Usually I get suckered into these things and waste my money, but this one actually does what it says it will!

FatLarrysBanned · 05/01/2026 07:34

Got the Tymo Curl Pro Plus and it's fantastic - had previously been using a long barrel tong which didn't curl the whole length of my hair and was fiddly to use.

I gently run my fingers through the ringlets when they have cooled down and it gives a really nice look.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 05/01/2026 07:39

Would the Tymo one be good if you have shorter hair and want a lose curl rather than a tight curl look?

Automatic Hair Curler, Curling Iron with 360° Rotating,4-Speed Adjustable Temperature Curling Wand, Fast Heating Ceramic Barrel, Dual Voltage Hair Curlers for Long Short Hair, Gifts for WomenAutomatic Hair Curler

unfortunately the exact one I got is now not available, and there’s no make written on it, but this is the description (above), I’m sure there will be others similar. It was £27 in 2023 for an idea of price.

AppropriateAdult · 05/01/2026 15:36

For those who got the Tymo, did you buy direct from the website, or via Amazon?

I had a tymo hot brush that I got loads of recommendations for anyhow amazing it is and offers of discount codes. It was rubbish, a huge waste of money and unsurprisingly when I payed that kind of review it wasn't published. I'd never buy anything from them again

@AppropriateAdult I quoted the wrong poster but I'd be sceptical of the gushing Tymo recommendations

Setyoufree · 05/01/2026 15:47

I bought the tymo on a whim for my teenager for Christmas expecting it to be absolutely shite but it seems to be good so far. Hasn't set her hair on fire, seems to work.

Got mine direct from Tymo, took forever (about 3 weeks) came from Hong Kong.

No skin in the game regarding a recommendation, I find it a genuinely good product that lives up to the reviews I've seen and believe me, I've been suckered into buying a lot of shite over the years 😩

Crocsforlife · 07/01/2026 04:29

I got the tymo I think it's shite. It may be me doing it wrong but I just can't seem to get to grips with it

mellongoose · 07/01/2026 06:27

My parents bought DD a Tymo for Christmas and so far so good. It’s easy for her to learn to use without burning her hair! I like it but am getting used to the different curls. I need to let the ringlets set before running fingers through.
