Really sturdy house shoes / slippers - Birkenstock or something else?

My last two pairs of house shoes / slippers have been two-strap Birkenstock shearling Arizonas. Each pair has lasted me between four and five years and I have literally worn them out so although they are expensive I get my money's worth!

My current pair are on their last legs and a generous relative has given me the money for a new pair in the sale. I'm wondering if there's anything better out there before I default to my old faithfuls? I'm looking at Birkenstock shearling clogs and at their felt slippers. Any other recommendations for something supportive and hard-wearing, please?

I got Croc slippers for Christmas, love them and I nip in and out with them. Seem all good so far!

I have Birkenstock slippers for the arch support (plantar fasciitis sufferer). Had them ages and they're still going strong.

I love my Mahabis. Bought a pair in lockdown, replaced them last year. Super comfy, but sturdy enough to wear to the corner shop if I can't be arsed to put on shoes.

I’m a shearling Birkenstock Boston gal. I don’t dog walk in them but have been known to nip round to Tesco Express with them on. I also have some ancient Ugg boots I wear at home if it’s really cold like now (NE Scotland with loads of snow).

I wear giesswein. With the rubber soles. The ‘hut shoes’

Living kitzbuehel also does similar

Beware the Birkenstock felt slippers - I love them, but the felt can wear through and I have to patch them to make them last!

Oh really. I've had mine for years and seem fine. Fingrs crossed

I recently bought a pair of sheepskin slippers with sturdy soles to replace the ones I've had for years which are still serviceable but very shabby. They were only £18 in a very reduced price sale online. They are really warm, well made and comfortable and look like they will last just as long as the more expensive ones I bought 5 years ago. I can't now find the name of the company, but there are literally dozens of well made sturdy sheepskin slippers from Pavers, Skechers etc for between £20 and £40 online.

Best slippers I have had by far are Shepherd. They have a slightly raised heel. I find Birkenstocks too flat now.

Another vote for crocs - specifically Crocs Unisex Classic Cozzzy Sandal - £28 from Brantano - i bought them as I needed foot support (leg/arch pain) which they help so much with, plus I just had a stay in hospital and all the nurses were super impressed with them - chunky sole, fluffy inside, soooooo comfy (yes they can be considered fugly but I love them)

I was just about to post about my felt Birkenstocks! I bought them in 2006 and wore them occasionally as shoes, but have worn them as slippers consistently for the last 6 years and they haven't worn through on the felt at all. I have had to 'shoe goo' the sole once but otherwise they are amazing.

I recently bought a pair of Skechers slip ins just to wear indoors - we have wooden floors downstairs and my bunion (from teenage high heels) was starting to kill me even wearing slippers with a decent sole. The pain has completely disappeared since wearing these for a few months. I don't wear them outside though.

Olderbutt · 03/01/2026 12:30

I buy Bob's slippers, made by Skechers. Really reasonably priced and great for a quick trip to the outside bins. Ive had the last pair 3 years and they're still in brilliant condition. Im retired so wear them a lot from October to April ish. Flip flops in the summer though

ThreeSixtyTwo · 03/01/2026 12:45

Peter Legwood. The best from both Birkenstock and Crocs.

Supportive inner shaping for feet comfort and all advantages of plastic - easy wash, great grip, choice of style and colour.

I got mine for an orthopedic condition and two women from my family got them since (in different colours) just to give their feet a rest.

I feel my Birkenstock felt slippers have worn down in the arches much faster than my actual Birkenstock sandals.

UpMyself · 03/01/2026 12:50

Crocs

I’ve been really disappointed with my Birkenstock slippers. They’ve stretched badly and are difficult to clean.

DJSteves · 03/01/2026 18:03

Ugg Tasman I’ve just got some for Christmas. Warm and easy to slip on and off. I wore them on a flight yesterday

schroeder · 03/01/2026 18:17

Gumbies work for me, I like the boots even though my dcs take the piss!
They last me a couple of years usually.

I’ve literally just had to change from my usual, beloved Ugg shearling slippers to Birkenstock ones because the Uggs weren’t providing me with enough arch support. The uggs were great - each pair did last me 4ish years of wear (and I mean constant, if I’m indoors I’m wearing them, wear - and I work from home), but it wasn’t working any more.

Op, one thing I would say is that there are a number of places (including quite high end ones) offering shearling clogs with cork sole. Do check what they’re actually made of though; very few of them are actually natural fibres when you look more closely and in my experience you do need them to be proper shearling otherwise your feet sweat in them and they start to smell quite quickly.

Daisy62 · 04/01/2026 00:39

Crocs. I find them wonderfully comfy and practical.

Greyhairwarmheart · 04/01/2026 08:11

Nordika have a great sole and last for years.

GameOfJones · 04/01/2026 08:22

Another vote for Crocs. I have the fluffy lined ones for winter and the normal ones for the rest of the time.

I originally bought them because I had plantar fascitis and was in agony walking on our downstairs stone floors in regular slippers. I'm now a total convert and would replace immediately but 5 years in they're still going strong.

Like a PP said I also like the fact I can take my Crocs camping, or to the swimming pool etc and then just bung them in the washing machine.
