Really sturdy house shoes / slippers - Birkenstock or something else?

My last two pairs of house shoes / slippers have been two-strap Birkenstock shearling Arizonas. Each pair has lasted me between four and five years and I have literally worn them out so although they are expensive I get my money's worth!

My current pair are on their last legs and a generous relative has given me the money for a new pair in the sale. I'm wondering if there's anything better out there before I default to my old faithfuls? I'm looking at Birkenstock shearling clogs and at their felt slippers. Any other recommendations for something supportive and hard-wearing, please?

I'm just replacing a pair of Haflinger Torbens after 5 years. Felt uppers, cork soles.

Thank you @thedevilinablackdress! I hadn't heard of Haflinger. I'm looking at some sheepskin clogs from them now.

Does it depend on whether you wear your houseshoes/slippers outside occasionally - because then the fabric of the sole becomes important (I am skilled in this as I walk the dog in my slippers sometimes and need proper soles when so many slippers have fabric bottoms).

Tbh I have low Ugg boots. Mine are about 7yrs old and apart from being faded (and a bit tea stained 🙄) they are in excellent condition.

I like a proper sole - I have hard floors and am clumsy so need traction! Not enough for a dog walk but certainly to put the bins out.

Thank you for all of the suggestions so far. I'm down a slipper rabbit-hole.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried Glerups?

Beware the Birkenstock felt slippers - I love them, but the felt can wear through and I have to patch them to make them last!

caramac04 · 03/01/2026 10:12

I wear lined crocs and they are very comfy, last ages and are robust but lightweight.

77Fee · 03/01/2026 10:16

Try Josef Siebel.

Personally I also use crocs as the rubber sole has good grip.

Ugg Ansley Slippers here but this thread has made me consider a change.

That said, I probably won't as I'm on my 5th pair. They last a good 18 months/ 2 years

Meinthecorner · 03/01/2026 10:18

My last pair of Glerups lasted 8 winters. I have the suede-soled ones and this hardens up over time but I wouldn't wear them outdoors.

Randomchat · 03/01/2026 10:19

Another vote for furry cross. But i sense you're looking for something a bit more upmarket

I don't mind spending £100+ but for that much I'd need them to last much longer than 18 months - 2 years!

I wear Merrell slip ons, jungle mocs I think they're called - outdoor shoes so great sole for hard floors. They used to have a clog and I was very disappointed when they stopped making it, but I can still get the mocs on easily

YorkieTheRabbit · 03/01/2026 10:31

I’ve got a pair of White Company cork bed slippers, had them around six months so far and they are great.

LupinLou · 03/01/2026 10:32

I have some gumbies right now but might try glerups when these die.

moggerhanger · 03/01/2026 10:36

I have Gumbies and love them. The inner sole can be replaced when it wears out.

Morethanthis71 · 03/01/2026 10:46

I've had Hotter slippers for 5 years and they are still in absolutely perfect condition, however, I don't often wear them outside.

NannyR · 03/01/2026 10:47

Crocs! Comfy, non-slip, can take the bins out in them, can be used for camping, can stick them in the washer - very practical.
I was once given a pair of UGG slippers as a gift and they were lovely and cosy and looked great, but they had a sort of suede leather sole which went smooth and shiny after they had been worn a lot and they were lethally slippery on hard floors.

Custardcreambiccy · 03/01/2026 10:57

Another vote for Haflingers here. I've worn my pair of Grizzly Torben clogs for several years now. They also do a leather version if wool isn't your thing.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 03/01/2026 10:58

Haflinger felt slippers here. My first pair lasted about 3 years (bought during lockdown so were worn every day) and my current pair are about 2 years old. The insole is getting ragged at the back now but the rest of the slipper is fine so I’m buying new felt insoles in the hope that’ll keep them going a while longer. I don’t wear them outside though, I have a pair of Birkenstock leather clogs by the back door for putting out bins and washing.

carbonelthecat · 03/01/2026 11:01

Halflinger Torbens here as well. Each pair lasts me 3-4 years but as I wfh I wear them daily inside for at least 6 months of the year.

outnumbered77 · 03/01/2026 11:07

I love fitflop slippers. My last pair lasted years and I just replaced them with a mule style.
