Cutting my own hair, should I do it? Pic...

Not had it cut for 18 months as they always butcher it. Figure I may as well butcher it myself for free?

Id like some length off and some layers, something a bit shaggy and will probably dye it dark brown.

Is it possible? Anyone have a tutorial to follow?

I cut my sons mullet for him regularly.

Yeah IMO it’s long enough to do yourself, gets trickier the shorter it is! I’ve been cutting my hair for years, went to the salon for first time in ages and left thinking ‘well it looks the same as when I do it’. Waste of money!

I wouldn't.

ShortberryStrawcake · 02/01/2026 12:30

I have thick wavy long hair and do the ponytail cut every six months or so. It looks good and keeps it looking healthy. I don't have a fringe though and I'm not sure I'd attempt a fringe myself.

Stickortwister · 02/01/2026 12:30

I cut my own hair. Use brad mondo tutorials.... BUT i have curly hair which is very forgiveable if i mess up and have face framing layers but no fringe.
Personally wouldnt risk a fringe or straight hair but if you do then use sharp scissors.

Not really anymore but yes to Brad Mondo/general YouTube to get the overall idea!

ThirdStorm · 02/01/2026 12:34

I regularly trim the ends of my long hair. £4 scissors or £32 dry cut with hairdresser…

I wouldn’t attempt layers and a fringe would make me nervous.

There are loads of tutorials on you tube, and hair grows back if you get it wrong!

itsthetea · 02/01/2026 12:36

I do mine - layers and fringe / but as with PP it’s wavy which covers up any erratic cut

fringe is the easy but as you can see it direct how it lies

I already do my own fringe and have for years.

Dont. Just find a better hairdresser. You will regret it.

Crojo · 02/01/2026 12:43

I cut my own hair for this very reason. Even my teenage DD’s cut their own fringes (and do a very good job of it) because hairdressers always mess them up. With a fringe just go slowly and cut small amounts off at a time. Make small upwards cuts to ‘chip in’ and soften it.
I followed the Brad Mondo butterfly cut tutorial recently and it turned out really well.

ShrimpBoil · 02/01/2026 12:46

Don't dye it OP! It's a beautiful colour.

Don't dye it OP! It's a beautiful colour.

Its a pain, it bleeds so badly in the shower/bath, looks like a scene from Carrie.

It fades so quickly and always unevenly.

Red is so hard to maintain!

If you're going to watch Brad Mondo then I'd also suggest watching Hair Buddha.

This is his video about cutting your own long layers.

ThreeLocusts · 02/01/2026 13:24

Another one who has been cutting thick wavy hair herself for years. Saves time and money.

Your hair is clearly a different story but I see no reason why uou shouldn't be able to produce a perfectly acceptable result. Good hairdressers are geniuses of sorts, but doing a decent cut isn't rocket science.

Zigazagbox · 02/01/2026 14:53

I started cutting my own hair for the same reason and I’ve not regretted it yet. I do have curly hair though, which I think hides a lot of sins.

I do a wolf cut/a shag and it’s pretty easy

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 02/01/2026 14:53

I cut mine myself - just part in the centre and bring forwards. You need to then cut in a crescent shape bearing in mind that the pieces at the back will need less off than the front (I think that's right!).

I even use lightening spray now which looks more natural than highlights. Whether you should do your own hair depends on how careful and artistic you are. It's not the time to be slapdash!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 02/01/2026 14:54

It may be the other way around - I can't seem to visualise it!

Coconutter24 · 02/01/2026 15:13

I used to cut mine in lockdown 🙈 I tipped my head upside down and put it in a ponytail on my forehead and then just cut the ends. I think I saw a tutorial on YouTube that showed me how

TheLurpackYears · 02/01/2026 18:12

Do it!
I’ve done a sort ponytail cut on mine for years and a Brad Mondo butterfly cut for my daughter for a while. Completely straight forward with sharp scissors if you follow his instructions.

outerspacepotato · 02/01/2026 18:23

I took an online class with Jayne Matthews and I can cut bangs and layers pretty well now. I cut my own hair but putting in a few layers makes it look a bit better. The classes are pricey but I found it worth the money.

Jok77 · 02/01/2026 18:31

My mum used to cut her own fringe- she'd put sellotape on it to get a straight line and cut underneath it! Hair dresser was horrified when she found out!

Strider55 · 02/01/2026 18:34

Do it! I cut my hair after watching Brad Mondo's butterfly cut tutorial and it came out exactly how I wanted it. I've actually had people ask me where I get it done and they're shocked when I say I do it myself.

I haven't had it cut by a hairdresser since so whether it's obvious to a trained professional or not that I cut it myself I'm not sure, but I am happy with how it looks and saving myself the money 😁

mixedpeel · 02/01/2026 19:55

Like you, @ChoppyNow , I’ve done my own fringe for years with no issues. Don’t have a Claudia Winkelman perfectly straight style so usually get away with it fine.

I’ve not mastered layers, but have trimmed my hair of a similar length to yours numerous times over the years. I go to the hairdresser once in a blue moon to get a proper blow dry and neat ‘finish’ for some reason - last done when I needed a professional photo for work purposes. The actual cut is rarely notably better than my own efforts by a week later.

Dollydishcloths · 03/01/2026 16:16

I do mine - I follow Jayne_edosalon on instagram. Loads of tutorials
