Run out of Claire’s ear piercing cleaning solution! What can I use?

DD has just announced that her supposed 3 weeks supply of Claire’s ear cleaning solution has run out - at 00.30 1st Jan!

No way to get to buy more tomorrow, doubt our closest Claire’s is open anyway.

Anyone know what is best to use to clean her piercings with tomorrow? Salt water??
Also any recommendations for something I can buy as a replacement if not the Claire’s stuff?

I'll stick with signposting to the advice from professional piercers, thanks.

awrbc81 · 01/01/2026 09:41

Yes it was done at Claire’s which I know is almost considered child abuse on MN but it’s the third lobe piercing we’ve had there (older DD has 2), this is a first one for my 10 year old.

No issues whatsoever with any of them and they’re healing beautifully. For a lobe piercing a gun or needle doesn’t make much difference.

Surgical spirit isn’t recommended anymore, I know that at least!

Thanks to all for sensible suggestions, will try and get something from Amazon to arrive tomorrow and use salt water for now

And dont use vaseline or twist the piercing either
Salt water or saline spray should be sufficient

Apacketofbiscuitsaday · 01/01/2026 09:47

Dettol or other antiseptic solution from the chemist.

CornishTiger · 01/01/2026 09:47

I’ve been recommended Prontolind spray
from my piercer before. Always worked well.

JazzyBBBG · 01/01/2026 09:49

Why isn't surgical spirit recommended anymore? Still love it 30 years later for cleaning a sweaty ear...

Madamswearsalot · 01/01/2026 09:53

The professional piercer we used for DD recommended contact lens solution. Cheap and available in supermarkets etc. He also confirmed no turning.

Big eyeroll at all the pearl clutching over Claire's. The deed is done. The ears are still ok.

Your DD should rub a big blob of Vaseline onto her piercings, front and back, and rotate the earrings.

Not funny. OP might not realise you're joking.
Cooled boiled water with a bit of salt is fine.

soupyspoon · 01/01/2026 10:09

I dont remember putting anything on my piercings years ago, perhaps some salty water a few times, they were just left alone.

ConnieHeart · 01/01/2026 10:54

Just salt water. You don't need much salt in there. I've never bought the over priced solution they sell in shops

catpigeon · 01/01/2026 10:57

I don't know why you need a solution

Gothamcity · 01/01/2026 10:57

If you have a pet shop near you, Leucillin spray is absolutely brilliant for helping to heal things like this. It's meant for animals, but can be used on humans too. We got some when my car had a bad injury and it cleared it up so quickly. And have since used it for every cut, wound, injury, human and animal related! Pets at home stock it. But saline or Salt water will be fine in the meantime.

Screamingabdabz · 01/01/2026 00:57

My DD’s both got them pierced there and it was fine. What’s the problem?

What's not wrong with Claire's piercings lol. They use guns which are highly unsafe. All a gun does is push the eating through its very blunt rather than a needle which actually makes a hole in the skin. Anybody with piercings will advise against anywhere that uses guns.

I had my ears pierced at a jewellers in 1985. It was the only place you could get them done. We used surgical spirit.

No such thing as Claire or Claire’s solution. That’s so funny that they sell a “special” solution when they are just a plastic beads and hairband shop.

Had mine pierced in a big department store in 1975. Always surgical spirit x

HostaCentral · 01/01/2026 11:38

Considering not so long ago we all had our ears pierced with guns. I don't see the difference. The earrings have pointy ends just like a thick needle. DD's had their lobes done in a beauty salon, but still with guns. Seconds and cartiledge a different issue.

Any saline solution is fine.

soupyspoon · 01/01/2026 11:58

Where has all the anti gun stuff come from, everyone had their ears pierced with guns, whats changed?

Unless you had it done with a hot needle in Sonia's front room c 1982 of course.

PurpleLovecats · 01/01/2026 00:44

Salt water.

But honestly, did you really get them pierced with a gun at Claire’s?

Yes salt water is best
and agree re Claire’s, it’s literally the worst piercing option out there. Should be illegal tbh.

Salt water is fine, no need to buy anything. I’ve had 17 piercings and only ever used salt water. Never had a problem.

Exactly! I have had my lobe piercings for 45 years, everyone got it done with a gun in a random jewellers unless they were hard and did it themselves with a boiled sewing needle! We all survived.
Cooled boiled salted water or saline solution from a pharmacy would be my choice.

purpleme12 · 01/01/2026 12:11

Every single thread and then on top of that every person in real life and then articles you read etc say competent different things on not only guns/needles, where to get pierced but also what's acceptable for after care, salt water or something else or something. One person will say salt water's ok another will say that person knows nothing for saying that. Impossible to know the right thing to do with ear piercing

BillieWiper · 01/01/2026 12:12

All the ear piercings I got from Claire's failed. I had about seven done in other places all fine. Not sure why but I wouldn't recommend it.
All the high street places use guns though. Unless you go to an actual piercing studio.

ChickalettasGiblets · 01/01/2026 12:13

Cool boiled salt water is what is recommended, with sea salt not the fine table salt.

for goodness sake don’t use anything else others have recommended like tcp, surgical spirit or Vaseline. Going to sting like hell and cause the piercing to get irritated.

Former Claire’s employee here. Claire’s don’t use piercing guns it’s the studex system were the earring is in sterile packaging the whole time. You’re right about salt water through. The “sodium solution” they sell is just salt and water.

Anothercoffeex · 01/01/2026 12:22

Hot water and table salt or hot water and soap.

Ive got 7 in each ear 3 was done with a sewing needle the rest was done with gun.
First ones I was 3 days old.

Or you could just use common sense and remember that salt water is in fact the cheapest & most convenient option
