Is it just me? It’s everywhere. Look around a city centre and there’s just puffer jackets cropped and long and brightly coloured Rab or Patagonia jackets. Basically everyone dressed for climbing in the Peak District for a trip to John Lewis or Coffee1.

I own outdoor wear but it’s for well, long walks in the forest, going to the coast or going up mountains. Why has it become so ubiquitous? And it’s all ages and classes seemingly. I don’t get it.

It’s just boring and scruffy too imho. I want to see people looking nice in wool coats and looking like they take a bit of pride in their appearance. Sorry if that’s controversial, maybe this should be in AIBU? I hate feeling like I’m overdressed when I just have a long wool coat on, I hardly see others in the same. Just fed up of the sea of gore-tex and hiking shoes.

Anyone else?

Yes. Also, did you see the Barbour coat the OP linked? Dull, boxy and ugly 🙄

Mmm, I did briefly wonder if this was ragebait and she'd overplayed her hand!

I live near a university. All the students seem to wear those big flappy grey joggers. It's obviously in vogue!

Wool on a sheep has a greasy outer called lanolin which is impermeable.

Wool clothing is made from the inner layers of wool which are finer and susceptible to water.

is there a reason why? Like were they always made this way? Was it sheep’s wool because it was good for weatherproofing or because it was easily available? Could it be made of outer layers?

@lisa021

This one was recommended on a thread a while back. I have it in black and can recommend it. It rains a lot where I live.

It makes me laugh that GenZ mock skinny jeans and other styles but wear the most baggy ugly outfits. I’d rather be in skinny jeans and ‘mumsy’ boots than looking like I’m wearing pyjamas out the house.

My logic is that ”I don’t care what other people are wearing“ doesn’t necessarily track with “I am interested in style and beauty”.

But I guess you are saying that you are only interested in yourself and not in others? I realise that could be more charitable described as not judging others, but that’s semantics. I like seeing how other people have styled an outfit (or landscaped their garden, or decorated their house …) rather than only being inwardly focussed.

Come on surely you can understand the context in which I said that.

“Not caring about what other people wear” in this context obviously meant I don’t get bothered ie. in the sense that I am not annoyed or negatively impacted by those who choose a different style.

As stated before - I like seeing different styles!

It was readily available. It contributed to the significant wealth of England, hence the Woolsack in the House of Lords. As pp said though, fabric technology has mostly superseded it.
People want lighter, practical clothing which is machine washable and available in nice colours.

Don’t they have punctuation in Poland?

GinaandGin · 21/12/2025 11:49

Who died and made you the fashion police?
Who gives a hoot of it looks 'scruffy'.
And what is this nonsense " how did people cope back in the day without gore tex??
So just because folk coped without it back in the day we should continue to suffer?
Have a day off

Not really! I have autism and adhd and often tend to act first, think later! That said, I think it was a reasonable question as, assuming Poland has punctuation, English being OP’s second language isn’t really a good reason not to be using it.

The average household income in the UK is £37,000 a year, I’m willing to guess your household income is many multiples of this. Of course you can afford to dress nicely and to own multiple coats and choose which one to wear for the situation. With the cost of living most people can’t afford multiple coats or to have different styles outfits for every occasion.

You’re also assuming everyone drives into town, but 25% of UK adults don’t hold a driving license and even more can’t afford to own a car or drive everywhere. Lots of people will be getting public transport or be walking into town, not everybody will drive

What this thread tells me is that you’re on a privileged position and unable to see that not everybody you encounter on the street lives the same life with the same income and luxuries as you have. It’s very easy to judge people, much harder to try and understand what another persons life might be like.

Why would being on a low income mean you can’t dress smartly? There are plenty of wool coats in charity shops.

Lagals · 21/12/2025 12:04

Binus · 21/12/2025 11:09

No it wouldn't. Not caring about what other random unconnected people wear doesn't mean you might not want, say, recommendations for a particular item for yourself.

Yep exactly.
