Fed up of all the gorpcore

Is it just me? It’s everywhere. Look around a city centre and there’s just puffer jackets cropped and long and brightly coloured Rab or Patagonia jackets. Basically everyone dressed for climbing in the Peak District for a trip to John Lewis or Coffee1.

I own outdoor wear but it’s for well, long walks in the forest, going to the coast or going up mountains. Why has it become so ubiquitous? And it’s all ages and classes seemingly. I don’t get it.

It’s just boring and scruffy too imho. I want to see people looking nice in wool coats and looking like they take a bit of pride in their appearance. Sorry if that’s controversial, maybe this should be in AIBU? I hate feeling like I’m overdressed when I just have a long wool coat on, I hardly see others in the same. Just fed up of the sea of gore-tex and hiking shoes.

Anyone else?

Depressed soggy dog walker!

Please help.
im not a great shopper but i do need expert advice on purchasing a waterproof long coat (at least to the knee) that is warm and practical. I’ve been very ill with shingles and neuralgia, and bedridden for 8 weeks and I’m finding it hard to face going out in the watery windy elements in my current short RAB puffer jacket, or my thigh length, waxed green coat that has lost its hood , and just gets soggy.
Because I’ve been rather low, I don’t particularly want to stick to dark earthy colours, but might enjoy a change, even pastels. I’d like to be able to walk my two dogs for an hour in rain if I want to and be happy and DRY.
I’m currently looking at Brobe coats by Beachbum.
any thoughts on these and other recommendations would be greatly appreciated
thank you
lisa

I'm sorry to hear that. This thread is so fast moving that you might not get many responses but, if you start a new thread on Style and Beauty - or look for old ones on the same topic - I think you'll get some good suggestions. I have a Seasalt Janelle which is below the knee and often comes in a choice of colours. I have to say I dislike it intensely but then I'm Team Wool Coat. However there are a handful of days most winters when nothing else does the job.

Barbour coats are meant to be outdoor wear for farmers. How do you think they are somehow permissible when other outdoor wear isn’t?

And I walk into town. I need a practical coat. Black coats can be dangerous to walk around in at night as it’s harder for cars to see you so brighter colours make sense even in non-hiking environments.

ElizabethsTailor · 21/12/2025 10:58

Then why are you both posting in Style and Beauty?

That would be like me posting on threads in The Litter Tray saying “I’m not really that into cats so don’t get why you care”.

(Actually, I love cats, but not the point.)

Edited

No it wouldn't. Not caring about what other random unconnected people wear doesn't mean you might not want, say, recommendations for a particular item for yourself.

Why would we not post in style and beauty? Not following your logic here.

I am interested in style and beauty and love that people have their own styles!!

My point is that it’s a bit pathetic the OP can’t just wear what she wants without being annoyed that other people are dressed differently.

My logic is that ”I don’t care what other people are wearing“ doesn’t necessarily track with “I am interested in style and beauty”.

But I guess you are saying that you are only interested in yourself and not in others? I realise that could be more charitable described as not judging others, but that’s semantics. I like seeing how other people have styled an outfit (or landscaped their garden, or decorated their house …) rather than only being inwardly focussed.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 21/12/2025 11:16

I only wear my puffer when it's really bloody cold, most of the time I'm in a suede or leather biker but the weather is so miserable (and mild) I've lived in my boring sensible waterproof jacket. Even my nice wool coat and jackets haven't been worn because it's so mild.

Yes. Also, did you see the Barbour coat the OP linked? Dull, boxy and ugly 🙄

Fernsrus · 21/12/2025 11:18

There are many microclimates in the uk so I think YABU.

What makes you think you look any good in your long wool coat?

For the sane reason wood looks better than plastic. A wool coat will always look better than a puffer

notatinydancer · 21/12/2025 11:19

Because they’re warm and practical. Not everyone can afford a wool coat / 2 coats.
Wool coats are difficult to dry.

The BBC finds them more than permissible:

How the Barbour became the ultimate British symbol

From the Royal Family to Glastonbury, the Barbour jacket – in all its dishevelled glory – has come to symbolise Britishness. Lindsay Baker traces the story of an iconic garment.

I have a double faced wool coat which looks wonderful and is light enough for spring or autumn. My puffa coat is very warm but not suitable for rain as it’s down-so have bought a Janelle. The Janelle has seen most wear this winter. Like you, I wear technical gear for hiking but don’t want to wear it around town. I love my wool coat with a long scarf. I don’t understand the snarky comments. I totally understand being interested in clothes and not wanting to look like a mountaineer in town.

A reasoned answer that’s read my post and not resorted to insults. Thank you.

I have some lovely wool coats. But they are heavy, so day to day I go with my super light puffy coat which feels easier to wear.

It's cos there's an element of this forum that's about helping people to find particular items, which may be about practicalities as much as aesthetics. As we've seen with the coat request in the last few posts!

So for example I've had help on here before when I was shopping for a loved one who needed an item to fit within set, non-negotiable dress rules, but also to have a less usual fastening. Multiple posters were very helpful, sharing their knowledge of what's available where, and I was grateful. I don't have to approve of or even take an interest in their taste in order for that exchange to be valuable, and similarly they may not personally have liked the products they linked to.

I love a wool coat.

I’m fact I’m heading out now to a friend’s house for lunch and am wearing this wool coat but in beige:

Hope you approve @needmorebooks

I'm not 'fed up' with it (and could hardly talk if I was as I live in jeans and trainers), but I have been noticing that more and more people dress for hiking in town. It's not so much the coats since a warm coat is a warm coat and practical wherever it's wet and cold. It's more when you get the whole ensemble of walking trousers, boots and technical coat or fleece. I saw a number of people dressed like this at the theatre last year and it was odd to realise this is a Thing. Nothing to do with formality (per above, I was in my standard non-dressed up gear) but the fact they were fully kitted out for the elements. Saw similar on a city break in the summer. Couples dressed for serious hiking, some even with walking poles. It was a small, compact and chilled out city, btw, not somewhere like Rome that seriously racks up the steps.

Navy is a nicer colour than sludge brown, but that's just my opinion.
