Being made redundant, can’t afford hairdressers

Hello everyone, I usually go to the hairdressers every 3 months for a colour and cut. Unfortunately life has taken a turn recently — 3 months sick leave from work on statutory sick pay and now I’m being made redundant.

The hairdressers is just too much money at the moment but I would like to cover my greys. Usually I get my roots light brown and blonde highlights. Now I know I won’t be able to recreate this myself, but any advice on where to start finding a box dye colour? I’m not wanting it to come out too warm…

Following as I'm in the same boat and terrible with doing things myself, go to the hairdressers every 4 weeks.

Daisy54 · 19/12/2025 18:57

esalon.co.uk
You can buy customised root colour , as well as a balayage kit.

I have used the balayage kit, which gave me beautiful, natural looking highlights.

You can contact them for advice.

Second esalon. I get loads of compliments including from hairdressers. It’s really easy.

WaneyEdge · 19/12/2025 19:07

Do you have a local college that teaches hairdressing? The one near me has its own salon you can book in. It’s much cheaper and the work is supervised/checked by qualified tutors.

Bluecatsss · 19/12/2025 19:19

Why don’t you ask the hairdresser what dye they are using in your hair and buy it from Sally’s? If you explained to them your current situation I am sure they’d understand.

MikeRafone · 19/12/2025 19:25

Does a local college do these treatments near you, it’s usually a really good deal and better than singing it yourself

I did and she wouldn’t say 🙈😂 she recommended root spray. She doesn’t like box dye because of the build up and she only knows salon dyes she said…

have a look for training nights aswell around the hairdressers.

Britpopbaby · 19/12/2025 19:58

Have you got an FE colleges nearby you? If so see if any of them have a training salon and look into having your hair done there. It will be much cheaper than a hair dressers and a little more expensive than a box colour .

Eyeshadow · 19/12/2025 20:12

I go to the hairdressers probably once every 3 years.

I don’t see the need to pay for things I can just do myself.
I don’t have grey hair though.

How quickly do your greys come through?

I use a box hair dye and I’m sure you can get them specifically for grey hair.
Someone with more experience with grey hair will give you better advice but don’t be put off by doing it yourself.

As others have suggested, an FE college is a good idea but these won’t be open for another 3 weeks or so.

She sounds a treasure!
My hairdresser knows I dye my own hair and frequently cut my fringe myself, yet never says anything snooty on the couple of occasions a year that I go to her. And she’s so much cheaper than salons (she’s freelance and comes to me).

CharlotteCChapel · 19/12/2025 21:20

I've had good results with garnier Olia.

bicyclecrash · 19/12/2025 21:21

I've never been to a hairdresser. As a child my mum's friend would cut our hair. I started doing my own hair as an early teen after the friend cut off my long hair into a horrendous bob. I now have long blonde hair (natural hair colour is black) which I cut and colour myself. Youtube tutorials, and ChatGPT will help you.

I developed an allergy to hair dye for a while so had to get an ammonia and PPD free one which ended up being the best dye i've used. comes with everything you need unlike other dyes. It's called eSalon and they customise it for you.

I no longer have an allergy so just mix my own shades, as I'm blonde I don't need dye just bleach and tone it and add a root shadow.

Strong disrecommend! I used them with awful results. Stick to a box dye or grow out the grey. It can look good as long as you’re otherwise polished.

NewPersonHere · 19/12/2025 21:32

PS also tried henna, wouldn’t recommend that either! Hope you find a solution, no pun intended.

I’m completely grey / white from the front to the middle and then darker at the back (more just the odd streak of grey). Very annoying — started going grey at about 23.

Oh no, I’ve just ordered from them! Was it the product or service you didn’t like?

A friend learnt how to cut her own hair from You tube instructions and she doesn't go to a hair salon and reckons she has saved a few thousand. I have had my hair done at training salons. Other friends go to colleges and get the students doing stylist courses and they are very cheap.

Rituelec · 19/12/2025 22:28

I do same now. I avoid permanent and now use semi permanent. Much better as no harsh grey line.

fiorentina · 19/12/2025 22:37

On our local Facebook groups trainee apprentices are often asking for models. It takes longer than a usual haircut and is in the evening but is very cheap or free.

dicentra365 · 19/12/2025 22:47

Ahh this happened to me, due to redundancy. If you're in the West Mids, University College Birmingham has a full salon. Depending on the experience of the student you pay either a token amount or nothing. It did take hours to get done, because you're essentially in someone's class, but I quite enjoyed it. I never went back to a 'proper' salon after circumstances improved, because the cost of living went up too, but now I have a lovely mobile hairdresser who is a lot more reasonable.

NightLightCream · 19/12/2025 22:47

E salon too….as I kept going to dark with supermarket box dyes.
When I’ve changed my colour, I just ask the to alter my usual dye and they do

LadyLapsang · 19/12/2025 23:26

Try being a model for a hairdressing training school or hairdressing chain. I used to do this as a teen / twenties. You can also opt for more senior staff doing specialist courses.
