Finery London - old lady or OK?

ClawsandEffect · 11/12/2025 11:17

I'm not in the first flush of youth (or even in my prime!) but I'm looking for a new dress.

I've seen a couple I like on the Finery website but I've got a feeling they're the sort of stuff my granny might have worn (not in her heyday, in her dotage!).

Help an (old) girl out! Are they OK or is it another site like Roman Originals?

Depends on the dress.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/12/2025 11:43

Im 63, I've never looked at the Finery website before but looking at it I don't really see anything I would wear. Its a bit old fashioned.
I prefer uniqlo.

This is my thought. The thing that pulled me in was the colour of a couple of the dresses. But the more I looked, the more I thought, oooooh, my granny.

I really like the look of Uniqlo but find their sizing a bit confusing.

I have never heard of them but just had a look and it looks pretty generic - not sure I'd commit to them being particularly old fashioned, lots of young people wear "modest" dresses these days. Young Muslim influencers have helped to shape this market.

Anyway, can you screenshot or link the dresses that you liked? What's the occasion? Perhaps we can help Smile

Floisme · 11/12/2025 12:22

Call me curmudgeonly but I'm disinclined to offer any help as I'm deeply unimpressed with the way you've framed this:
'Old Lady or Ok'?
Really?

Milkbloo · 11/12/2025 14:43

Opened this thread to say exactly what Floisme said.

I mean , honestly. When is this going to stop. So toxic.

first flush of youth? Prime? Old lady? Yikes at the ageism.

Leftsidefacing · 11/12/2025 16:57

I own a Finery dress and could answer but the shocking ageism in your OP is putting me off.

gogomomo2 · 11/12/2025 17:04

I’ve got a couple (bought second hand) which a lovely. Like many retailers, they stock a variety of styles and you have to choose what suits you. I like a winter velvet dress myself

Soontobe60 · 11/12/2025 17:09

I suppose I’m now verging on being one of your so-called ‘old ladies’. I don’t give a damn about what I should or should not wear. I wear similar clothes to my 30 and 40 yr old DDs and also to people like Jo Good who’s just turned 70 and is stunning.
Quit with the ageism though.

RaininSummer · 11/12/2025 18:33

I like some of the summer dresses by Finery which I got from Vinted. They are great for work as a good length and not cut too low. Maybe I am an old lady though.

I'm definitely one. And yes, I would have worn quite a few of the dresses for work. I think they'd be ideal for professional dress.

I got a Finery dress last summer
Navy polka dot
Wasn’t expecting much but the cut is superb
I’m an hourglass shape but slim size 8-10
Dress looks far from frumpy
Your post has reminded me to order from them again to see if it was a fluke .

Motnight · 11/12/2025 22:10

Casual ageism is alive and kicking, I see.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/12/2025 23:03

Oh ffs. Do fuck off with the ageism. Wear a dress or don’t, from wherever you want to, but don’t equate age to being something to sneer at.

ExitPursuedByABare · 11/12/2025 23:44

Looked at the Finery site and doesn’t strike me as frumpy. But then I’m old 🤷‍♀️.

Floisme · 12/12/2025 09:14

Having said my piece, I'll try and answer the question.

I've never bought or paid much attention to Finery. On the website it looks.... well, if you'll pardon the pun, fine. There's a velvet dress with puff sleeves in burgundy or dark green that I liked until I looked a second time and saw how shiny the fabric is; also a corduroy midi dress in the same colours. If I had nowhere else to shop, I'd probably be able to put together an outfit or two but there was nothing that'll stay in my head and I though quite a lot of it looked a bit tired.

I was surprised because previously I'd thought they were more interesting than this and also pricier, but maybe I've confused them with somewhere else.

Ihadalittletime · 12/12/2025 10:44

I have got one Finery dress which is really lovely on and I wore it to a wedding. The cut/shape is flattering not frumpy.

DinoSoar · 12/12/2025 12:22

Which dresses do you like @ClawsandEffect ?

I had a quick look and they are very similar to some styles by Nobody's Child, Boden, Crew, White Stuff.

The flouncy, tiered peasant style midis with a V neck are in all those brands.

They are very cheap so if you see something you like I'd go for it.

The models are all young so they are not using grey haired models for instance like Woollovers or Patra!

FullBl00m · 12/12/2025 12:30

by the sounds of it I’m much younger than you, not that it matters. I have a Finery dress and it’s lovely, feels really nice and flattering fit. I would’ve bought more but no pockets.

Agree with above PPs have some respect, for yourself and others, and address your ageism.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 12/12/2025 12:59

If you like it, age has nothing to do with it. Buy what makes you happy and please, as many have said, stop with the ageism, it perpetuates barriers and misconceptions .

DinoSoar · 12/12/2025 14:15

I don't think age is relevant to clothes as it's more about what you suit.
I draw the line at anything that exposes my upper arms, bare back, bare thighs.
And black except for trousers.

So when I scroll through websites, anything showing too much flesh is out.
Likewise, apart from summer dresses, I avoid anything too 'billowy' because they make me look swamped and I'm a size 8.

Apart from those criteria I think clothes are ageless now in a way they never were 40 years ago.

outerspacepotato · 12/12/2025 14:40

Gettingbysomehow · 11/12/2025 16:06

Its very confusing.

They change their sizing too from year to year. Grrr.

mustwashmycurtains · 12/12/2025 15:52

as PP said - depends on the dress. I have a dress from there which is flattering and nice but they are the ‘classic’ end of my wardrobe rather than the cool one.
i have a skirt form there which I’ve worn possibly hundreds of times so they are doing something right.

from memory they have become a little blander and a little cheaper than when the brand first started.
