What boots/shoes with this dress?

For a Christmas do? I have brown lace-up ankle boots, black ones the same style, some slightly longer black calf boots, but nothing particularly "partyish". I need to be able to walk in them and negotiate the escalators on the Tube btw! I was thinking the brown, or do I need something new?

What boots/shoes with this dress?

It has an elasticated waist under the belt so I don't think it'll make a difference to the way it hangs, but it might improve the look somewhat. I'll try it and see. Still a bit worried about flashing my colleagues on an escalator though!

Ah, ok. Maybe try tying it to the side then rather than the middle - & not in a bow, just a flat knot so that it hangs down simply?

All good ideas but I hear from my (mostly male) colleagues that they're all planning on wearing jeans and jumpers so I'm probably just going to do the same now. Nothing worse than trussing yourself up and visibly making an effort and then looking overdressed! I think the new boots with some flared jeans and a "nice" top will be adequate and won't make me feel self-conscious or muttony.

Dress looks great with any ankle boots.
At 46 with less like that, I'd wear smooth rather than sparkly tights.

Go for whatever you feel most comfortable in, bc that will show most.

Funny - I'm completely the opposite! I'd much rather be over- than underdressed! And I'd just disregard the men (as they'll usually take the laziest least effort option!) & wear something lovely anyway ... 😁

I’m sorry but none of them are good. The flat shoes are particularly bad.

PeonyBulb · 07/12/2025 01:51

You have a cracking figure so should wear something a bit more evening out out as opposed to daytime casual work wear.

I find comments like these interesting! I think I should dress for the occasion and what I feel comfortable in, and whether or not I have a "good" figure is neither here nor there. It's a couple of work parties in the middle of the afternoon where most people will be dressed quite casually. I don't think an evening look would really fit the occasion.

Thanks, I guess. Does that go for the ones I actually bought as well?

I think the teal boots that you bought are lovely, and will go very well with the dress 🙂you also do have fabulous legs, I am quite envious!

Obviously I thought it was an evening occasion for some reason

In which case yes your outfit is perfect

Not sure anyone wants to be told they look like shit though so no idea why you take umbrage at being told you have a cracking figure

Go off and enjoy your party I’m sure you’ll be the life and soul

Just to add you arent too old to wear a short dress! Im 48 and my best feature is my legs and I regularly wear above the knee dresses, and have a mini sequin skirt as well. Age is just a number.

Flared jeans and a nice top sound great for an afternoon works do. I had my works do last week (also a lunch/afternoon) and we had all sorts - full on glam to jeans and christmas jumpers!

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 08/12/2025 07:55

@peonybulbI'm sorry I was snippy with you. I'd had a weird/stressful week and I was unnecessarily rude - your comment didn't merit it.

I love your new boots and think they could really lift the outfit and make the sparkly tights work. I don't think it's too dressy for daytime either.

Zebracat · 08/12/2025 09:53

I love your dress , it’s not too young and it’s not overdressed. I like your new boots too. The only dressy element would be the sparkly tights, which I also love. Trust your instinct!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/12/2025 10:41

Love the dress, love the teal boots but I think I'd wear black tights as they'd make the teal stand out more.

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 08/12/2025 11:03

Thanks all. I'm going to try it on again with various tights and see how I feel. I think plain black ones might make me feel "safer" but wasn't 100% sure it would work with the teal. But you reckon it would be ok?

What about charcoal grey opaques rather than black? Or dark opaque ones with a sparkle rather than the silver sparkly ones? White Stuff does opaque dark grey tights with a sparkle. They even come in teal! But I think green legs AND boots might be just a bit much ...!!!

I've got tights in almost every colour except dark grey! Well, I have some grey cable knit ones but I don't think those would work. I do have black sparkle ones though.

The sparkle will probably make your black ones look a bit lighter? I'm sure they'll be fine if you don't want to buy a new pair. Quite tempted by the coloured White Stuff versions myself ... 😀
