Waterproof trainers for wearing outside all day

Hi, I've just got a new job, which will involve teaching children in an outside setting. I need something to wear on my feet that are comfortable but are also waterproof and able to cope with the weather through the seasons. I don't want them to be too hot in the summer, and not too heavy, but I also don't want cold, wet feet in the winter! Does anyone have any recommendations of waterproof trainers or something else suitable?

Thanks in advance!

Not Hoff! I wore my Hoffs on a rainy day. Feet got drenched and the colour bled from the suede into the pale nylon. They are ruined, after a single day in the rain.

Can you wear hiking boots or hiking shoes? I strongly recommend Salomon. Incredibly comfortable from the first wear. Like walking on air. Incredible grip, lightweight and 100% waterproof. I have their boots and their walking shoes.

Sorry to hear that - how disappointing for you. I nearly bought a pair recently for general use, rather than work, but sent them back as they were too small. I was going to reorder but probably won't if the could runs.

I can but I don't want them to be too heavy. Are yours light?

I’ve got a couple of pairs of Sorrel boots and a pair of their trainers and they’re all comfy, lightweight and waterproof.

alatusblack · 26/11/2025 15:44

Can’t advise on shoes. But my husband, who cycles in all weathers, uses Sealskinz socks, and says they are properly waterproof.

have a look at Goretex trail running shoes

Yes, really light. Both the boots and the shoes were the lightest weight in the shop but also the most comfortable. And hardwearing. The shoes might be good if you are doing stuff like climbing trees. The boots are quite supportive/restrictive around the ankles, which is great for hiking but not much else.

Nike Gore-tex running shoes. I’ve worn them through the last three winters. Light, comfy and grippy.

Do you want trainers that look like trainers or do you want shoes that look a bit like trainers?

I wear Merrell hiking trainers for this sort of thing. They aren't very pretty but they are waterproof and comfy and those were my requirements. They also have good grip which is a priority for me.

I think trainers that look like trainers but I'm not too fussed on the look, more how practical they are.

Thanks so much everyone - I'll take a look at your suggestions. @alatusblack waterproof socks are a good idea too - I might put them on my Christmas list 😊

Have a look at express trainers for one's with gore tex. I just bought a pair of these https://www.expresstrainers.com/saucony-ride-15-tr-gtx-gore-tex-waterproof-womens-running-shoes-45253-422-p.php#SY365437 as a lightweight waterproof hiking shoe. Sizes are getting limited though as they have a 50% off code HAPPY50 on these https://www.expresstrainers.com/weekly-price-cuts-422-s/ Salomon do lots of waterproof hiking shoes too but look out for sales and stuff because can be bonkers pricey.

TwinklyMoose · 26/11/2025 16:27

I have a pair of Hoka waterproof goretex trainers. They are SO comfy and come in loads of different colours. I do about 10,000 steps at work and I wouldn’t even know I had a corn when wearing them!

Badslipperluck · 26/11/2025 16:27

Adidas terrex have probably been the least waterproof footwear I've ever owned. Let water in from day 1 just walking across a field, wasn't even raining. Sorrel have been brilliant. If we're talking forest school type thing you'll probably want something with ankle coverage.

sammyspoon · 26/11/2025 16:29

Another vote for Nike goretex

BoarBrush · 26/11/2025 16:34

I have both waterproof skechers and Adidas terrex trainers. The Adidas ones are quite heavy. The skecher ones are pretty roomy so allow me to wear an extra pair of socks if really cold out. Both pairs have lasted two years so far and kept me feet dry.

craigth162 · 26/11/2025 19:19

I have sketchers that are waterproof and they are really lightweight. Big made so size down. Can't remember exact name but they have laces but can be kept tied so you just slip on and off so are 'hands free'
