DD needs a Mumsnet verdict - is this dress striking or just OTT?

DD needs a dress for her 6th form prom - should she go for this or play safe with something like this

Or any other suggestions would be gratefully recieved - pic of DD on my profile

I would be really wary of buying online for this occasion actually. You don't want to end up being disappointed by the fabric or the fit, and then being stuck.

She should really go and try some stuff on in RL.

DRESSMEUP · 09/06/2008 20:52

love the first one.... she is young and will look amazing.

RustyBear · 09/06/2008 22:04

Hi sorry I disappeared so suddenly last night, but our broadband went kaput.

I think I may take DD shopping - she did say hopefully 'Coast have got a sale on!' but I think we may check out some of those ingles linked to at New Look.

She's not around atm - she's not very well (horrible sore throat, swollen glands & throwing up)& has gone to her boyfriend's for a little TLC - she's got her second A2 exam tomorrow & he can take her there & bring her back so she doesn't have to catch the train to college - just hope she can get through the exam.

Thanks again for all your help & lovely comments

I prefer the second one.

BUT... your dd is gorgeous enough to wear the most striking dress she can find. She doesn't need to hide in the corner by picking a dress that camouflages her (iykwim)

Monkeytrousers · 09/06/2008 22:09

I love the first one! Go for it. And she will always have a killer dress in her wardrobe after too!

RosaLuxembourg · 09/06/2008 22:28

I agree you should take her shopping and try on a lot of stuff even if you end up buying online.
But you know she would be a knockout even if she was wearing a bin bag.

MsDemeanor · 09/06/2008 22:32

Sorry, but to me the first one looks a bit like something you might find on a loo roll! I also gasped in shock! Second one very nice, but maybe a bit old for a gorgeous, willowy 16 year old. Do they all wear those sort of ballroom dancy dresses? My 16 year old is wearing something short and foxy and trendy with stratospheric heels. They feel no pain at that age. And yes, your daughter is very beautiful - I think she doesn't need that much frock. Maybe something cute and strapless and 50s, or slinky?

RustyBear · 09/06/2008 22:45

She's 18 btw, not 16 - she moved from school to 6th form college after her GCSEs so she gets a second 'greatest night of your life'

Not boring me at all! - I've sent DD a link to this thread so she can check it out after her exam tomorrow, assuming she feels up to it.

I think she may prefer a long dress, as she hates her legs, though her boyfriend may persuade her otherwise!

I really like the first one, and she is very very pretty. Good skin too

Dunno about the colour of the second. And she would definately suit a slinkier dress too - but i would cringe about buying my daughters a mini (mind you they are only ten).

Monkeytrousers · 11/06/2008 06:34

I still think the first one. Go for it!

Buda · 11/06/2008 07:08

I think your DD is a stunner and with her colouring the first one would be fantastic on her. It stands out from the rest as being a bit different tbh. It's stunning, kooky and fun. All things she can get away with at 18. Some of the other dresses are a bit boring imho.

JodieG1 · 11/06/2008 07:22

I love the first one. She would really stand out in it, she's very beautiful and can definitely pull it off. The second was too samey.

chonky · 11/06/2008 07:31

I love the colour of the first one, however really not convinced by the design. Loathe the colour of the second (sorry!).

I'm liking ingles's suggestions.

ps - rusty, your dd is stunning

RustyBear · 11/06/2008 14:25

Rusty's "dd" here.
Aww thanks for all the compliments guys, that makes me feel awesome =]
notjustmom, your dress ideas have been the best so far i think, though the rest of you have had some great ones too. I love the runched red one from debanhams but I don't know if my budget will allow that =[ plus like my mum said I'm not big on my legs.
Thanks for all the ideas everyone! I'll be sure to make mum post what I finally go in xx

ChairmumMiaow · 11/06/2008 16:27

Rusty's DD - the green is great and with your figure and colouring you can really carry it off. If you want to really stand out -in a good way - go for it!

RustyBear · 20/06/2008 17:56

Tonight's the night! - in the end, DD decided she'd rather keep her money for her holiday & went with the black lacy one she wore to her friend's 18th - her friend goes to a different school, so no-one at the prom will have seen it - so the picture is similar to the one I posted before - same dress, same boyfriend, same place!

Not a good photo, but they were running late

Thanks for all the suggestions - I think DD is planning to get at least one of them for university, when she's saved up a bit from her holiday job.
