DD needs a Mumsnet verdict - is this dress striking or just OTT?

DD needs a dress for her 6th form prom - should she go for this or play safe with something like this

Or any other suggestions would be gratefully recieved - pic of DD on my profile

I don't exactly like the first one, it is a bit bonkers but the colour is great and would look good on your dd. But it is way better than the second which is drab, drab, drab and looks like some has run it up out of some old curtains and a bit of trimming from the remnants box.

so, in conclusion, I would say go with the idea of the first (bonkers and green!) but find something better. Do not wear anything resembling the second.

ps I am out of touch, what is a bloody prom? even primary schools are having them these days. My poor mind boggles, can only think of the tragic discos we had at school, proms sound terrifying!

Thomcat · 08/06/2008 22:38

Looking at stuff from the same seller I prefer this maybe??

RustyBear · 08/06/2008 22:40

Thanks for the comments & links -DD is really blushing here with all these compliments - especially the sackcloth comment lully!
She likes the one in your second post DSM.

She does already have this but in a more goldy pattern which she is thinking of but is worried it might not be 'special' enough.

That one is lovely TC

PortBlacksandResident · 08/06/2008 22:40

I love love the green one. Very different and beautiful detail.

ButterflyMcQueen · 08/06/2008 22:40

i like the first

your daughter is a beauty - show her off

the girl in the different dress is the one who will make a statement and be remembered

DrNortherner · 08/06/2008 22:42

Personally I don't like either. Your dd is gorgeous and should wear something abit 'younger.

The one syou linked too are a bit old for her imo.

TK MAX have some fab stuff in - are you near one?

robinpud · 08/06/2008 22:43

I'm afraid I agree with Thomcat on all 3 points. does she want to stand out? Would something simple, but striking like this cut it?

Boco · 08/06/2008 22:43

The first one is a bit panto, I really like both of dirtysexymummys suggestions - vintage would be good.

eenybeeny · 08/06/2008 22:43

she will look great in anything. But the first one is the one that sets the heart thumping. I say be brave and wear it!

DirtySexyMummy · 08/06/2008 22:43

Glad to be of help.

Rustys daughter - you are gorgeous and i'm sure you will look good in any dress you choose. Will you take some pictures of you on the night and post them up here for us to see the dress you choose?

Heated · 08/06/2008 22:47

Bucking the trend here, but I think the first one is dramatically fab, especially with her colouring. Your dd has the figure to pull it off but agree with the pp who said that she needs to have the height as well. Nicole Kidman could pull this dress off.

I like the sexy back of the second one, but it's also the safer option.

Depends which your dd would go for.

Thomcat · 08/06/2008 22:47

I think it's all about what she feels good in. she's striking and I think she could carry most dresses off. I'm a bit of an understated girl when it comes to dresses but what do I know?
Hope she has a great night, xx

harpomarx · 08/06/2008 22:50

no, don't encourage her to go with second Heated, it's horrid!

RustyBear · 08/06/2008 22:52

This was what she wore at the Year 11 prom, but she's not quite so much into the goth look now - this was for her best friend's 18th a few months ago

ravenAK · 08/06/2008 22:57

Definitely the first then, if she's a bit of an 'alternative' chick - that gorgeous auburn hair means she can carry the colour off. Second is slinky but a bit boring.

Heated · 08/06/2008 22:58

Actually Harpo is right , I still like the sexy back to it but red dress and red hair? Too much methinks.

ingles2 · 08/06/2008 23:01

Sorry RB, your dd is gorgeous but those dresses are really old fashioned.
Debenhams have got some fab frocks, much younger and would be perfect for her. Something like
this is nice
this one in green?
personally I think she'd look fab in this orange one

ingles2 · 08/06/2008 23:03

ooo ok she's now got red hair and is quite goth..
um the green I think!

DirtySexyMummy · 08/06/2008 23:03

Jesus rusty - she is stunning.

Like ingles Green one, its really nice.

RustyBear · 08/06/2008 23:03

DD says she's not sure she'd dare post pictures from the night - you might not like what she'd chosen! (She lurks a bit on MN & knows what a nest of vipers wonderful helpful bunch we are!)

But she says thanks for the help & the compliments - she is off to bed now as she is still doing exams (not tomorrow though, luckily) - will check out the links again tomorrow (after she's finished revising I hope!)

ingles2 · 08/06/2008 23:04

nah sod it! try this

ingles2 · 08/06/2008 23:10

New Look have got some really cute dresses and they're sooo cheap!

harpsichordcarrier · 08/06/2008 23:13

the first one - god she will look ravishing
the second one is flipping dullsvile
but yes, black dustbin bag etcetc

joash · 08/06/2008 23:26

The second one (experience of 3 DC's proms to go on). The ruffled one just wouldn't fit in.
