Winter trainers/walking boots

I spend a lot of time outside and live in trainers. I need some that are suitable for cold/wet weather or even better some boots. Hiking boots might do but they are all a bit garish. Do any cool looking trainer style outdoor boots shoes exist? With good grip on sole.

i know everyone wore those Grenson boots a while
back but not so keen on them and don’t really like DMs.

I've just bought the Justina boots from Heavenly Feet and I'm loving them. They come in lots of colours and I'm particularly enjoying wearing them with my cropped jeans or my trousers slightly rolled up so you see more of the boot (but no ankle skin showing.)

I just got some winter boots from Columbia

only worn once so far, very comfy.

I'm looking for high top sneakers as a casual alternative to boots. A few friends have these and they seem to fit the bill, but I need to get to a shop to try them on, so I don't have any specific recommendations.

Try Pavers or Moshulu for Chelsea boots with really good soles with a walking shoe-style grip.

Haha I think trainers are usually far more garish than hiking boots - they’re mostly shades of brown! Any little orange or yellow accents are usually fairly quickly muted with the mud that tends to accompany them…

I’d look for lightweight hiking boots in brown colours. And if it’s the laces that are too bright they can be easily changed.

The choice is enormous.
Do you need them to be splashproof (rain and occasional squishy puddle) or actually rated waterproof? The former will be cheaper, and almost any real leather boots will do it if you look after them.

Claymoreiron · 22/11/2025 12:34

Waterproof preferably I have leather boots. I suppose I really want warm, waterproof trainers with good grip. Trail shoes I guess.

Have you tried Allbirds?

I would just go to an outdoor shop and see what catches your eye. These are my dog walking/outdoor shoes, they are properly waterproof with a decent sole but definitely trainer rather than boot, and really comfortable. Scarpa, Salomon, Merrell all have plenty to choose from.

Adidas also do hiking boots which are a bit trendier

I really like Meindl boots, pricier but long lasting

I just bought these from Mountain Warehouse (although actually found them Amazon for a few pounds cheaper!). As my username suggests,
it was the leopard print that sold me 😂

I've had a lot of waterproof hiking trainers, and Salomon are the only ones which have stayed waterproof long term.

Cherrysoup · 22/11/2025 18:05

Merrels for me and DH, although I’ve got Muck boots on watch on eBay currently.

I use Asics trail shoes. Waterproof and grippy!

Jones3A · 22/11/2025 18:08

Definitely Sorel, they are gorgeous. I have multiple pairs and they are my absolute favourites. The waterproof ones are particularly amazing as someone who lives very rurally and often walks in winter through puddles to the ankle! 🤩.

WonderingAboutBabies · 22/11/2025 18:31

I have some MerryPeople boots. Brilliant for walks and casual wear!

Holluschickie · 22/11/2025 18:35

I have Berghaus Supalite. Can't find a link as they are from last year, but they are great.

DelphineDuck · 22/11/2025 18:52

Sorel

I have 2 pairs that are a cross between trainers and walking boots. So comfy, waterproof & warm

only criticism is sole is not very grippy if you walk a lot on slippery terrain
