Gilets

There is an article in the Fail today saying gilets are old fashioned ? Do you agree?

OP posts:
AngryLikeHades · 17/11/2025 15:09

No because I wear one and also because that newspaper produces alot of crap, including that article.

Mysticmaud · 17/11/2025 15:10

Nope. I live in the country and they're comfortable to drive in with a sweater.

ticktockitsNCtime · 17/11/2025 15:11

No. I've noticed recently that the 2000s style gilets in particular are getting popular at the moment.

Milbie · 17/11/2025 15:13

Lol probably! As I drag mine on under a decrepit wax jacket and stuff my feet in wellies older than half my family, it seems likely. But the ancient hills remain as they are and the clothes best suited do also.

Bananalanacake · 17/11/2025 15:21

They were called body warmers when I was a kid.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/11/2025 15:26

I think they're old fashion, rather than old-fashioned - specifically those worn as a Cotton Traders-style cardigan alternative. People bundling up to trudge out in winter are a different matter and must do whatever's necessary to keep their kidneys warm.

There was a photo on our village Facebook page recently of a community council meeting - four women in their 70s, all wearing lightweight gilets. My mum was one of them.

I also play a game spotting passengers in campervans - they're very often women of retirement age+ wearing a stripy top and gilet. It's a phenomenon.

museumum · 17/11/2025 15:27

I don't think they are 'fashionable' in the way they have been but they are bloody useful and practical. I'll keep wearing them for practical reasons but I wouldn't get one to be 'in'.

AmyDuPlantier · 17/11/2025 15:28

Oh gosh I never noticed the Breton-Gilet thing and now I’ve realised my mum wears it a lot. The beige filet 🤣

To me they’re a bit workwear - a lot of car salesman and the like wear corporate branded ones.

Definitely not chic in my eyes.

SweetBaklava · 17/11/2025 15:33

My mum and her octogenarian pals all wear them, I don’t personally know anyone else that does among my 40/50 something friends. I’ve seen some young wans wearing the long length version. No for me. My arms would be too cold 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is this the article you’re referring to?
Can’t read it as I’m not a member but doesn’t appear to exactly say that, does it?

It says the wrong gilet can be, which I’m pretty sure you could apply to any item in a wardrobe.

Cold day in hell before I stop wearing mine. It’s just plain black (not the long ones) and I absolutely love wearing it in autumn.

There's nothing more ageing than the wrong gilet

A gilet - fashion speak for a substantial longline waistcoat made out of anything from fur to fleece - is the gift that keeps on giving.

Ridiculous clickbait thread about a ridiculous clickbait article. I can't read the article but the title is There's nothing more ageing than the wrong gilet. These are the styles that add decades - and the only ones that stylish women should wear, by fashion guru SHANE WATSON.

That bears no resemblance to what the OP said the article says.

CaffeinatedSeagull · 17/11/2025 15:53

Sorry, I just end up thinking of Tim Sherwood when anyone mentions Gilets.

Definitely an acquired taste.

Tumbleweed24 · 17/11/2025 16:00

I'm currently wearing one as it's really practical with big arm holes following Breast Cancer surgery. I bought it to limit clothing bunching under my arm and adding to the discomfort and pain.

Lifestooshort71 · 17/11/2025 16:13

I've got half a dozen that I live in once the weather turns, usually over a couple of layers and under a puffer. Very cosy and comfy and out of date. I wouldn't go out to dinner in one or anywhere smart but, compared to squeaky-bum leggings (with requisite thong and bit of wobble) and a skin-tight zippy....I prefer my look to that.

Why be bitchy? Nobody mentioned leggings but you.

Sourdillpicklesandmore · 17/11/2025 17:11

I wear them. Live in the country. They are practical. Couldn’t give a stuff what anyone else thinks, especially Daily Mail readers!

Gettingbysomehow · 17/11/2025 18:35

They aren't high fashion but living in the country I wear them all the time. My midriff gets cold but I get too hot if my arms have an extra layer on them if Im out walking or gardening.

Not just any leggings!

FairViewRosie25 · 17/11/2025 20:43

I’ve got a fleece Barbour one that i wear under my 20 year old Barbour knackered coat with my wellies for dog walking. Rural mucky wet drove where they are just lifting sugar beet. Everything is coated in mud.

mdinbc · 17/11/2025 21:29

Wearing one as I type. Yes, I am a sixty-something so I fit the type. They are practical, easy to wear and a good one lasts for ages.

Agree it's not a style either my daughter or DIL's wear. There's would be more puffy and worn with an oversize hoodie.

caffelattetogo · 17/11/2025 21:56

Never giving mine up. It has so many pockets!

Isabelle70 · 17/11/2025 22:42

I spotted my faux fur one in the wardrobe at the weekend and thought I must wear it.

I like is as it’s so soft and lovely to stroke :)

HolidayBrochure · 17/11/2025 23:22

I saw a black rabbit fur one online and it looked lovely. Not sure I’m up to wearing rabbit fur though!

DancingNotDrowning · 17/11/2025 23:49

I don’t think they’ve ever been fashionable?! They’re utility items generally worn by the very young or old, with a specific variation worn by both the hunting/shooting/fishing set and tech bros.

Magpie50 · 18/11/2025 01:53

I absolutely loath the padded ones, especially those knee length ones. It's very much part of the uniform round my way though (I also hate puffer coats so I can't imagine why anyone would want to wear an armless version!😄).
But I do love gilets in other fabrics. Wool, denim, fur, suede, leather...all great!
