There is an article in the Fail today saying gilets are old fashioned ? Do you agree?

God love mine. But tbh it’s definitely part of the ‘uniform’ with the people I know (quite literally at mine and my DPs workplaces 😂). I have schoffel and deerhunter ones for shooting, rydale for dog walking and Holland cooper for nice. Wouldn’t be without them, just a nice insulating layer!

I've just asked my husband for a new red one for my birthday!

As I work in fashion I probably need retiring. I also own Bretton tops.

I was out in the garden cutting the grass wearing one of mine yesterday. I hate being cold, I’ve always been ‘comfort over style’. It wasn’t cold enough for a full coat, too cold for a jumper only. I’ve got atleast 4!

ozarina · 18/11/2025 08:24

That's not what the article said though @Ilovemyshed!

I don’t get them. Why leave your arms cold?

They're also the look amongst a certain sort of braying, Range Rover-driving man called Charles or Jonty round my way, which puts me off.

I’m in my 30’s and love a gilet. It’s the right amount of warmth when driving.

Thats so funny...its def a uniform around here, but not of the posh types (we dont see any posh types. They'd probably get mugged!LOL).
Here its usually knee length padded gilet with either a Primark hoodie and joggers or pajamas and crocs or slippers. sporting a croydon facelift whilst screaming at the kids to run through the school gate in the morning!😆

I think they're more of a class thing rather than fashion. The horsey set have been wearing them for years. My grandson asked why the coat didn't have any sleeves ehenni tried one on.

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2025 10:59

They’re a bit Alan Partridge aren’t they? I live rurally and have an outdoors job, but I’ve never felt the need for one. If I’m cold I put on a jumper or a jacket. If I get hot, I take it off. I’ve never had a situation where my arms were hot but my torso needed insulating.

In the horse world it’s more to do with practicality than fashion.

You can start to become quite warm riding if you wear a full cot, and the absence of a sleeve allows your arms a free range of movement. Ditto manhandling hay bales and reversing trailers.

I’ve got a horse and a foal and spend most of my time in a Dry Robe!

I must be a cold-arse.
