Help : January wedding

Bigbadmama · 16/11/2025 21:59

Help please Mumsnet stylists !
Suggestions for something smart to wear from my nieces wedding in January please. Its not in a church, but a big hall in a historic building. Early afternoon wedding then on to meal and evening function.
I am 60, size 14/16 average height and a tendency to be a bit busty. Want to look smart and put together but not frumpy. I am very sporty/outdoorsy so have an extensive selection of riding and running gear and very little else ( apart from a decent overcoat).
Thanks

This is rather lovely, IMHO. You don't mention a budget so I will keep it reasonable! 🙂

On the other hand, if you like a print, this is fab, and it's viscose which is soooo much nicer to wear than polyester (trying to avoid that). Comes in a few colours some sold out in your size but this green is available and it's a very current colour.

@Bigbadmama I’m a couple of years older than you and find the idea of aiming to look smart such a depressing thought. Don’t you want to look fabulous?

You don’t give a budget, but if you’re unlikely to wear the outfit again even a few times next year, it might be more satisfying to rent, so you could wear something lovely. This is a very helpful article which lists some of the best sources:

Thank you. SMART is good for me, as default is usually slightly muddy accessorised with bits of hay. Thats an interesting idea to rent, hadn't thought of that, but I am more likely to find something in a charity shop. If it was my own daughters wedding renting would certainly be an option ( she would approve too) .

How about this?

MinnieMountain · 17/11/2025 13:14

That’s lovely. Elegant and classic as well as seasonally appropriate. Perfect.

TroubledBloodyMary · 17/11/2025 13:30

I honestly wouldn’t leave the house in the Sosandar dress. In fact I’d refuse to try it on.

🤷‍♀️

MinnieMountain · 17/11/2025 13:40

Why’s that @TroubledBloodyMary ?

I’d say it fits OP’s request for smart and it’s a lovely colour.

TroubledBloodyMary · 17/11/2025 13:52

For around £100 I’d be more inclined to choose something like this (perhaps adding a tiny above knee skirt, in maybe gold silk or purple velvet, but keeping the tights and shoe styling):

Zara coat-dress

(And yes, I would be happy to wear black to a wedding.)

If, like the OP, I were more of a trousers person, I’d almost certainly prefer a trouser suit

OP is 60 and busty. Double breasted garments look atrocious on women who are busty - if they can even fasten them. A tiny, above the knee skirt at 60? That takes a level of confidence very few of us have at that age.

TroubledBloodyMary · 17/11/2025 14:03

I am over 60.

For heaven’s sake, there’s more than one way of dressing at any age. Do you think I’m posting here for a joke? Or do you think that after more than 60 years of getting dressed I might actually know how to do it?

It was a suggestion. The OP - who declared that she did not want to look frumpy - is more than welcome to reject or ignore it.

How about a jumpsuit? This is slightly over budget now but the website suggests a black Friday sale is imminent

Or a silk blouse and wide leg trouser combo

I attended a wedding late January. This is probably really obvious, but please choose a coat that is very warm as well as smart/wedding-friendly! We were outside for ages taking photos and it was BALTIC. My coat was OK but some attendees either didn't bring a coat (just a wrap), or, brought a duvet/padded/'dog walking' coat.... the former froze, the latter looked awful in the pictures.
Again really obvious point but you'd be surprised how many people dress for a wedding on the semi-conscious thought routine that it's in the spring/summer (given most weddings are!) and don't factor in being outside for pictures for quite a while!

MincePiesAllRoundPlz · 18/11/2025 10:31

If you want smart, look at Hobbs, Jigsaw, Phase 8, Whistles. If you have more of a budget Me&Em.

I went to a winter wedding earlier this year and wore a long silky midi dress, long full sleeves with cuffs, a fitted waist and V neck, in a blue/ black print. I wore a wool navy city coat over it (midi) and high heeled knee length boots.

A lot depends on how much you will wear a coat. I wore mine only for travelling and there was a cloakroom at the venue (very famous Registry Office.)
