Is this DIY accidental hair colour nice? Can't decide.

Background: am naturally grey but have always dyed my own hair either copper/auburn or fashion colours (red/pink/purple/blue) and played around with bleached money pieces etc.

Recently really went off the copper and also was finding the roots really difficult to manage so I stripped the colour out with extra strength colour remover.

After some DIY toning and cutting this is what I'm working with.

PROS:

Greys are much easier to manage and my hair is in much better condition.

CONS:

I don't feel as much like me. With the bob and the colour I feel rather.........sensible.

I'm used to a higher contrast between my hair and face.

My style is quite vintage and maximalist (lots of leopard print, 80s jumpers and piercings) and my hair doesn't feel like it fits my style as much now.

Should I keep it or dye a ridiculous colour for the Christmas work do?

Is this DIY accidental hair colour nice? Can't decide.

It’s impossible to tell without having a clue about your skin tone to see how it matches

ClemFandangosHair · 14/11/2025 17:19

I think it is totally gorgeous! Keep it x

I agree. I like it as it stands, but your list of cons is so long I don't think that you do, so I think that's the clincher?

Thebigonesgetaway · 14/11/2025 17:20

That is a lovely colour and it matches your skin tone, which is visible in the photo perfectly. But it doesn’t match your style as you said, but it is lovely.

Jugendstiel · 14/11/2025 17:21

I love it. That's a colour I aspire to. I think overly bright and artificial colours are aging - a bit 'I'm whacky, me!' But this is lovely.

Jugendstiel · 14/11/2025 17:21

Really love your haircut too.

Prelim · 14/11/2025 17:22

Personally I don’t think it’s the best colour. If you’re going to go for something an unnatural looking colour like this, you may as well go for something that’s more your style.

SoScarletItWas · 14/11/2025 17:22

It’s the shock I think! I am also a high contrast person (Welsh, blue eyes, pale, naturally dark dark hair, vintage vibe red lipstick etc). In my mid 50s now I did the same as you - stripped off the colour and now use a semi perm auburn. So it’s much lighter than I’m used to.

It took me months to get used to not seeing the same contrast. But once I ‘got my eye in’ I could see how much more flattering it is.

So I say keep it and see if you get used to it.
It looks a good colour even if we can’t tell how it looks against your skin tone.

Nandina · 14/11/2025 17:24

It's lovely.

SoScarletItWas · 14/11/2025 17:24

Alternatively have you considered changing the CUT to something less ‘sensible feeling’ so you get your edge back?

Overtheatlantic · 14/11/2025 17:25

Festive pink would be great.

DangleenAnkle · 14/11/2025 17:25

I'm pale, freckly and pink-toned with blue eyes (i.e. Irish). The warm tones in this colour definitely suit my complexion. It's the level that I'm struggling to adapt to. I feel like my hair and skin are too similar in tone whereas I'm used to having something more vivid. I do like it though and like it more now than when I first did it.

Work colleagues vote for keep. DP votes for dye.

It's nice but it doesn't sound like it suits you. It looks like my very sensible, very severe, deeply stylish and chic grandma's hair. She always looks fabulous and terrifying. Very Miranda Priestley.

But that doesn't sound like you at all, from what I can gather from your very short post. And I genuinely mean that in a good way. You sound fun and bold and daring, and I just don't think chic, sensible hair fits that. Dye it green and fill it with gold hair tinsel, it's Christmas.

🤣

Pretty much how I feel too.

What type of DIY toner did you use? I might do something similar.

SoftBalletShoes · 14/11/2025 17:30

It's a beautiful colour, but since you say that there's not enough contrast between your skin and hair, it probably doesn't suit you. It's a VERY warm colour, so if you have cool-tone skin and eyes, it will really wash you out. It's really impossible to say without seeing a full picture of your face, but I appreciate you probably don't want to do that on a public forum. You could try the hair forums on Reddit, as you can delete your post yourself.

ETA: Actually, I can see a sliver of your skin between your hair and the white scribble. Looks to be very fair with pink undertones. If that's the case, then this kind of colour won't suit you. It would be great on someone with brown or hazel eyes and a warmer skintone. From your pale skin it looks like you might have light eyes. If so, I agree not enough contrast.

latetothefisting · 14/11/2025 17:36

I say stick- because it sounds like for you, having a fairly "normal" hairstyle IS more "shocking" and more of a change than something crazy would be, so why not give it a go for a few months. Might be an interesting social experiment to see if people treat you differently. See what family and friends you don't see that often say over Christmas.

Obviously not forever but you've (accidentally) found a colour and cut that looks really nice, why not stick with it for a few months, you might not be able to recreat it again! Then you can change in January when, let's face it, everyone can do with a fun pick me up.

clansh · 14/11/2025 17:36

Hmm it’s not a ‘natural’ colour and there’s no dimension, which makes it look even less like a natural head of hair. That said, I quite like it!

clansh · 14/11/2025 17:37

Ah just seen you prefer a more vivid look!

quirkychick · 14/11/2025 17:39

When I stopped dyeing my hair, I also found the loss of contrast hard. I originally had very dark hair, pale skin and blue eyes, so going very silver was hard. Also, I had lost a lot of length growing out the colour. However, make up and creating contrast with colours I wear eg silver hair + burgundy clothes etc puts the contrast elsewhere.
I don't have a classic, elegant style either but more of a retro/indie/hippy style. Now, my hair is long again, it's more me iyswim.

Charlize43 · 14/11/2025 17:48

I like it a lot. It looks very chic.., but it does make your face look very pale. Also did your cat scratch you?

Chewbecca · 14/11/2025 17:49

I think it looks good BUT if it doesn't feel like you, it's no good, so I vote dye it.

It doesn’t look very shiny OP, is that usual for your hair type?
