I'm going to Paris and don't know what to wear!

Well, other than warm clothes! I am spending two days in Paris next week with dh. The forecast is going to be single digits and rain, carry on luggage and i am good at packing light.

We are going to get there about midday and mooch around for a bit before (and this is the bit that makes it tricky) seeing a gig in the evening. The gig will be hot, shouty and I might get beer spilt on me.

I was planning on chunky but comfortable black ankle boots, tights and a mini skirt for both days. I have found this skirt which I am really drawn to. https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc146720191

It's a lot jazzier than what I normally wear but I am oddly drawn to it! Would I just look odd walking round Paris the next day though? Coat wise I am hoping that my lovely oversized wool one will be OK with an umbrella. To go to the gig I am just going to ditch the coat and wear a wool jumper that can be tied around my waist, I think the place is close to the hotel.

I have never been to Paris before, I am oddly nervous!

Comfy shoes, most parisiennes when we were there wore wide leg jeans, decent trainers and well cut tops/jackets. Comfortable shoes above all else as we walked about 7-11 miles each day.

BashfulClam · 12/11/2025 12:01

They do dress casually so that skirt will stand out 🤷🏻‍♀️

Perruquier · 12/11/2025 12:11

Are you saying you want to wear the same outfit noth days, including the gig? Can you not just wear the skirt to the gig? (I can’t access the link so can’t see it, so just saying this on principle, and if it’s a mini, it’s not going to take up space in your hand luggage.)

I’m in Paris in a few days to see friends. I’ll probably wear my usual jeans, biker boots and (very old) green trenchcoat. Thin-knit jumper, scarf.

biteybpob · 12/11/2025 12:17

Tourists will probably be in comfy jeans/jumpers/coats, I don’t think you need to worry about dressing up, just be comfy.

Youll be walking around and climbing stairs all day, so I’d say wear trainers or walking boots

Blarn · 12/11/2025 12:20

Change into a different top and tights the day after! I default to wide leg jeans but I was worried that with the rain I would just have soggy legs (done that in my teens, don't want to repeat now!) and walking around, even if I change for the evening will just be miserable.

I could pack the skirt and tights. The boots are comfortable but maybe I will wear my goretex converse which will keep my feet as dry but are definitely comfortable for wearing all day. I've attached an image of the skirt, not seen it irl, it could be hideous!

Paris is like London, there is no one style, lots of tourists, lots of she ranges, lots of ethicities. Unless you dress like Mary poppins no one cares. So wear what you feel comfortable in and like.

NorWouldTilly · 12/11/2025 12:49

It’s a great skirt! But I’d travel there and back in comfortable footwear and trousers. The skirt is only tiny to pack.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/11/2025 13:00

Sorry OP but I think that skirt looks really cheap and nasty. Perhaps it looks better in real life though and they’re just bad photos?

I used to live in Paris (twice) and there is definitely a certain way of dressing, usually more conservative and classic than London. Quality and cut matters to most Parisians. But you’re a tourist so no one will care and/or notice. Wear whatever you like!

Homegrownberries · 12/11/2025 13:18

Wear the skirt if you like the skirt but if the aim is a. to be warm and b. to fit in in Paris, it's not really the way to go. Maybe wear it for the gig but wear jeans or trousers for travelling and daytime. Parisians tend to go for well cut casuals. They don't really do jazzy.

Ciccici · 12/11/2025 13:20

My advice for Paris is identical to every other city - wear whatever you feel good in. There is a huge range of styles in Paris, as with anywhere.

At this time of year, many people will be in jackets/coats. I'd probably opt for natural fabrics in thinnish layers, and a pair of heavyish, comfortable boots that you can walk in and will also look good for the gig.

The Goretex Converse sound ideal for comfort and dry feet, and that's pretty important. Have a great time!

Daughn · 12/11/2025 13:25

I want to know what the hot, shouty, beer spilling gig is!

It's the Hives! Saw them last in Wolverhampton so even the gig will be the same, the city will be a lot fancier!Grin

Where in Paris are you likely to be (ie which arrondissement[?

BurntBroccoli · 12/11/2025 16:09

I’d go for something like this. A longline coat or jacket looks instantly stylish. You could wear with a mini skirt, boots and tights too.

Needanadultgapyear · 12/11/2025 16:12

I don’t normal comment on style threads, but I do go to Paris a lot.
In the winter there is a biting cold wind and it will feel much colder than it is. I often wear tights beneath jeans when it is single digits temperatures.

Oriunda · 12/11/2025 16:30

Live here. Check weather but it's quite mild right now.

Problem with Paris is that the day starts around 8C and can end around 18C. Factor in how much walking as opposed to metro travel you'll be doing. Layers are best. I've only just put my summer stuff away.

NigelForage · 12/11/2025 16:34

Start with shoes and coat and work backwards

whoopsnomore · 12/11/2025 17:23

If you are going to be in and out of the metro/ shops/ museums (whatever your plans are) a wool coat AND a jumper could be a bit too hot? Agree with a PP who said lighter layers. Otherwise, skirt & boots sound great! Some neighbourhoods are indeed fairly "classic" and expensive conservative in style, but by no means exclusively so, and by the sounds of it, not your gig!

Ivy888 · 12/11/2025 17:53

You’ll stand out wearing that skirt during the day. It’s a party look skirt.
I’d just wear jeans, comfortable sneakers, a top and a nice blazer or jumper.

Daughn · 12/11/2025 18:26

Saw them at their album launch in Sept. It was so good. Hope the skirt is what you hope it will be. I can see why you were drawn to it. If nothing else it will be wipe clean if beer is indeed spilt!

Olivebranch123 · 12/11/2025 18:41

Dress to please yourself. Most women in Paris seem to have an aversion to colour, playfulness or any sense of personal style when it comes to clothes. The seem to wear mostly black, navy, camel and white and look borderline .miserable.
Wear your fun clothes, you'll look fabulous.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 12/11/2025 19:03

It’s been many years since I went Paris but all I remember was that is smelt of wee. The previous poster nails it though a long line coat, it doesn’t really matter what you put underneath, you can just use the coat as the statement. Have a good time.

JillMW · 12/11/2025 19:14

It is the perfect skirt! You will look fab! Wear with a vest for the gig and roll neck jumper for the day! A lot of Europeans are wearing 20 denier tights, use those for the evening to look edgier! Wear a warm coat and a spare jumper over your shoulders to travel. In your luggage you only need a spare skirt/trousers, undies and I always take a pair of ballet pumps just in case! You will love it! Enjoy

Joeninety · 12/11/2025 21:09

Maybe tank top and loons ?

HildegardP · 12/11/2025 22:42

You'll be boiling in the gig & freezing when you get out, a microfleece jumper or gilet that you can scrunch into your handbag while dancing might not be a bad call. For the daytime, dress to walk, walk, walk, Paris is a city to ramble.
(Maybe book an official tour for a couple of hours if you can, they're fabulous condensed introductions to the city & there's bound to be one that covers aspects that interest you both parisjetaime.com/eng/things-to-do-in-paris/tours-and-cruises-paris/guided-tours-paris-i034.)
